R&A Graveyard / Re: Live Performance Section
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:18:23 pm »
I both agree and disagree. You could easily start a thread about live set-ups and gear in the Gear section or start a thread elsewhere about live performance techniques and tips, but a section to consolidate JUST threads about would be nice. Maybe it'll happen if we ever get flooded with live performance threads in one section. That hasn't happened yet though.

GET AN AUDIO INTERFACE.
All you really need is an interface.

I'm gonna add to this, any decent PC with enough of RAM and a great audio interface will do wonders for you.

I've been working on the same mid-2012 macbook 13" and only just recently upgraded my ram and hard drive a few months ago from 4GB to 8GB and I've almost never had a project crash on me since then. If you have a decent interface to do all the thinking for your audio apart from just your PC will help a lot too. This is just my experience. Most of my VSTs are very CPU/RAM hungry..

The interface part is really important though.

I'd check this out before reading that. I haven't read through the book, but I remember the pictures on the free version being all blurry and most example patches not included. The synths he uses are also not super conventional and not free either, with the demo's only lasting like 15 minutes or something.
Synth Secrets is aimed a biiiit more at using analog stuff, but only a bit. Most if not all of the concepts the series goes over can be applied to digital synths as well. 1st half is mostly conceptual stuff and explanations, the second half goes into synthesizing mostly real world instrument sounds. Highly recommended, goes over almost everything you need to know from the ground up, and it's free!

This is great stuff too! Thanks!

I try to challenge myself and see how natural sounding I can make a 100% synth noise.

This one sounds like a bad case of diarrhea.

This is perfection. This is what synths were made for. If only robert moog were alive to hear this.

This bad boy covers the basics, subtractive synths, additive synths, FM, AND sample-based synths comprehensively all while still being an easy read.

I found this on the KVR forums forever ago and thought I'd share it here as well.

So fucking good. This is my song of the year so far and will definitely end up on my top 10 of 2015. The lyrics are touching, the production is beautiful and inspiring and Ty$ vocals are so fitting to the atmosphere of the music. This is honestly one of my favourite Kanye song in years. As for No More Parties In LA, I need more. What I heard was so good. Hearing Kanye and Kendrick spit over a Madlib beat was unexpected in the best way possible. Kendrick continues to prove that he's one of best rappers of the new school.

Cannot wait for Feb 11 when SWISH is released. He's also releasing new music every Friday like he did back in 2010.

yeezy season in full flow

it's about time

Well, from my point of view, it's just a pain to set everything to +0.50, especially when working with synthesizers. I'm not sure though really, I feel like I might try it properly and see how it goes. I think it's just a personal laziness (Which I'm also guilty for :P)

However I believe this producer uses quarter tones in his melody sections which you might find interesting. Check out 0:41.

To do it properly wouldn't you need two instances of whatever plugin?
one at normal pitch, the second at +0.50 to get the full range of notes.

That song was really neat by the way! Thanks for sharing that. It had the middle ground of arabic tone quarter notes, and creepy dissonant quarter tones.

Heyo, coming back since you've updated everything.

So, Kick is still weak. There's a lack of bass in your experimental drop thingy or it's not low enough. Panning snare could be a good idea if snare are used as percussions not as main snares. Sometimes it's confusing to not hear a heavy snare after the kick.

There is cool ideas, need a bit more work and they could be very cool.

I'll have to keep that in mind for the future, I really appreciate the feedback! To be honest though, I'm pretty much over the track now. I wasn't being very serious about it at all, it was a joke for a friend and I think I got far enough with it.

I mean it doesn't have to be the "hey im better than you" kind of thing. Could be a way of saying thank you to the person for using the site as often as they do

yeah i get that but the whole premise of this site is to have everyone basically be COMPLETELY equal, not putting anyone on some sort of pedestal

Then you should really consider putting the verification marks only on the profile page :)

The verification marks have nothing to do with that. It's to verify that someone is who they say they are. It's not some VIP deal they have with the admins.

Right. Read the post I linked; checkmark on the profile page = "I can verify this is who they say they are." checkmark on every post: "This poster is notable"

I can respect that. I'm on both sides though. Either way works for me, but I understand where you're coming from now.

A quarter tone is the pitch between what normal pitches we know of in our chromatic scale. Instead of moving notes up and down the scale a semitone at a time (which is half a tone), we move a quarter a tone at a time. Quarter tones have been used in music around the world for quite an impressive amount of time.

My question is this, what is stopping this technique from catching on in western music? Is it because it's to hard for artists and composers to implement today? Is it too awkward and weird for the usual audience?

Bonus points if you can point to some producers using quarter tones now. I'd love to hear it in use, or even how they use it.

we're not going to do perks because we want everyone on here to be equal
