Finished Tracks / Vera - Blizzard || EDM in dire need of opinions...
« on: April 06, 2016, 07:55:22 pm »
Slightly drum and bassy and quite heavy.
Please let me know where I'm lacking and what I still need to improve on. I think gotten it sounding a bit less muddy and crowded, but the headphones I used could mean the bass is a little too strong or the kick hits too hard or something so tell me if it does, and other problems I may have. Thanks so much!

Also any flaws with regards to anything else please mention (but compliments are also welcome xD)

Thanks for the listen ))

0 drums..? Thought sidechaining would sort of give the kicks a bit of breathing space but maybe I just haven't heard it on good enough monitors. I'll play around a little. Thank you for the advice :))

Yeah that is true. It felt hard to have the amount of channels I did without messing that up.. I think it might be a good idea to pan things in order to give it all a bit of breathing room.

Made a new track and fixed up on all the criticism I got on my last song.
Fun track with an EDM + 8-bit feel. Let me know what you guys think.

It's awesome! I dig the ambient feel of it, and you used some pretty sick synths too that blended really well with everything.
Only criticism I would give is that it lacked a theme, so there wasn't really any melody that sort of sticks with you afterwards, but otherwise I thought the production was great. Good job man :) keep it up

Thanks for the opinions guys :D

@Shikimo I still have a lot to learn in the mixing department so I think that's sort of where I'm headed next. I'll spend the next few days trying to master that (haha).
I think I also need to just get a crazy load of sample packs to give me a bit more to choose from to fix the bad sample problem.. I also liked the 3:22 bit, I felt cool playing it ;).

@NewPatrol Thanks for the compliments, I agree about the boomy chords.. Turned them down a little. Also I realized that you're right about the first bit in that I didn't return to the first theme before the end of the song which was maybe a bit silly of me..

I'm a pianist/guitarist/drummer(/vocalist but meh).

Drums for 5 years
Piano for 5 years
Guitar for 1 year.

Now the answer to your question is seriously difficult to arrive to, since there are a few stages of learning an instrument.. The first stage for me is learning enough to play something that sounds at least pleasant, for me that's chords I guess. The second stage IMO is to be able to spice it up a little (7ths, suspended chords etc.) and improvise. The third stage is being able to convey an emotion in what you play. If you were to add a fourth it'd be to just build on everything and become more impressive lol.

Now, to use that to answer the question, drums was really easy to be able to get something going. Piano took a little longer to learn all the chords + a basic knowledge of progressions and stuff. Guitar I learnt basics and chords very quickly, probably since I already had a chordal knowledge. Second stage on drums took longer than it did on piano, and longer than guitar. Then I hit a brick wall with drums. I reached a point where I found it insanely hard to progress - and it's not because I was really good, I'm still pretty crap. Piano on the other hand, progress skyrocketed. Guitar? Not so much (but maybe if I give it a bit more time).

At the moment I'd say guitar is difficult (to play well enough to impress people), but that's probably just cause I'm a pianist. You get me?

**********EDIT: I misinterpreted the question but I'm far to lazy to change it all. Anywho, I think producing is more challenging because it requires instrumental knowledge in the first place. I don't think you'd get that far if you tried to produce without ever playing an instrument (but there are exceptions).

Thank you guys so much for the feedback :)

I think some of you may have picked up a vibe that I don't really enjoy music making and that I'm just sort of doing it or instant fame, but that isn't the case. I love making music, I was just scared I wasn't really getting anywhere, and also scared that it was awful..

My favorite producer is Haywyre (Endlessly and Insight) and I often sit down to make a track I want to release and get this annoyed feeling like "I can't actually do that" and it puts me off a little. I tend to make a beat, put in some chords, pick a synth and just improvise for hours. Then eventually I stop doing that and start making a song. TBH I wouldn't mind just releasing improvs XD.

I think the key lies in patience. A lot of you told me it takes time, and @daimon I agree with what you said about how each individual artist broke the ice. But I don't think they broke the ice BECAUSE of myspace or youtube or reddit etc, I think they broke the ice because they had something people want to hear. So I guess that's where I need to go. I need to keep making music until I can make something worthy of the time spent listening to it.

@ninthparallel, thanks for the motivation man! I enjoyed your Porter Robinson remix a lot. You spoke about having an emotional connection to your music and I agree that's essential to giving your track meaning beyond something that was made for the purpose of being made. I'm an ambitious person and I fight to achieve my goals, and if that goal requires involvement and practice, I'll get involved and I'll practice.

Thank you to everyone, I have more direction now :).

Made a new track the other day and I'd love some feedback,

I played a couple solos over it, the melody is mainly piano with a drum and bass. Written in major so slightly more happy sounding.
Enjoy and please let me know what you think (be as harsh as you like).

#detune

You could probably make some bucks selling this if they ever make horror themed spin off of transformers?

On a serious note though, I liked your dubstep! The song was pretty scary but like you said it was experimental. Keep experimenting! It's good and gets you experience.
