Man awesome tune, I half agree with ApolloNash, I think the lead sound is fine but it gets a bit boring just being in the center. Maybe adding more stereo interest could help, either directly on the lead patch or by layering and affecting the layered sound. If you use ableton, the slow pan preset is a favourite of mine. Also love that effect at 2:08, the bitcrushed kind of thing, how did you do that exactly? Lastly, good job on the mix, everything sounds clean + the drums are really punchy throughout, nice job man!

WIPs / NGHTMRE remix (how do i make it more dynamic)
« on: May 01, 2016, 04:56:39 pm »
Hey guys, just finished this one up yesterday and I'm pretty stoked on it, just wanna make sure I nail the mix/master before I officially publish. My problem with this track is that I can't get it as loud as my other tunes without killing the dynamics. I want to keep the quiet parts how they are but I feel like I could push the chorus/drop harder and make it louder/more leveled out. Any ideas how I could do that without bringing up the quiet parts too? Thats my main concern but if you have any other feedback on the mix I'd love to hear what you think :)

Sound Design / Re: Risers in Massive or other analog Synth.

yeah +1 for macros, EZ PZ and you can adjust to taste

Ekali sample pack has those spacious Rustie sounding kicks. Those + an analog clip saturator with the gain boosted will give you what you're looking for. I remember reading in an interview that Rustie uses analog clip a ton. Also, I find it much easier to just synthesize an 808 rather than use a sample. Its really as simple as a sine wave + a bit of distortion/bit crushing or a lowpassed square wave. I usually do that in massive then throw on a saturator on medium or hard clip and low pass again to taste. That'll get you a super fat sub that you'll be able to hear on any speakers.

One last thing, you can sidechain your 808s to your kick if you want but I've had more success just highpassing the kick at like 150-200hz and just laying it over the 808. Depends on what I'm going for, if its a slower track then I sometimes go for that ducked sidechained sound but if it's a trap banger that's usually what I do

cymatics savage drums is coming out soon, they have like 40 or something samples free on their website right now. they have future bass drums too. but yeah, lex luger kit is standard, just use it, it's worth having for getting your ideas out if nothing else. Kid Urban on youtube put out two soundpacks, he does bangin trap. Also Ekali released a sample pack for free that's tight as fuck too

A big thing for trap too is kick placement. Pay attention to which kicks fall on off beats and which fall on down beats. If you're used to writing 4 on the floor music it might be tricky but listen to a few of your favourite songs and bob your head. Get a feel for if the kick hits when you bob your head downwards (down beat) or upwards (off beat). Pretty straight forward but its the first thing I tell people to do when making break beat music. If this isnt second nature to you, you'll have a hard time with it.

As far as tempo I dont think there's really any correlation between it being 100 , 150, or 200. 140-150 in general is a pretty dancey tempo. I love 170-200 (85-100) ish personally

the buildup sounds like a typical guitar tapping riff, would be sweet if you layered it with a guitar possibly. Also the drop doesn't really hit hard after the build and that growl is much wider and louder than the main bass. Try making the main bass wider and turn it up a tad and that should help them mesh together a bit nicer

Updated: changed it up a ton, cleaned up the mix, gave it a quick master. It's like 95% there, last step is bounce everything to audio so I can add some subtle details for variation and she's done!

Appreciate the feedback guys, I think I've been listening to it waaay too much so I'm gonna rest on it for a few days and the redo the mix by comparing to a reference track.

@Ark you went light on me homie ;) haha appreciate the honesty, that's what I'm looking for. Definitely noted, almost considering renaming it to Tea Time No for shits haha.

But yeah if you guys can roast harder bring it! That's what I'm looking for

Sound Design / Re: How to effectively pitchbend 808s
« on: January 25, 2016, 05:06:04 am »
can you post some examples of your own work? but yeah just synthesize them or find 808 patches and mess around with the glide. Also saturators are my secret weapon for 808s. Really beefs it up by bringing out those upper harmonics which helps make those pitch bends more audible.
