How do you stay motivated all the time?
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:36:18 am »
I sometimes get really tired and don't want to do anything. I just stare at my DAW screen for minutes.
How do you make yourself do the job? I am curious how some producers get constantly inspired by small things, and produce new songs often.

I like to listen to music that I know will inspire me. I've got a playlist of songs that I make when I'm feeling inspired for the times I'm not feeling that motivated. Most of the time when I'm not feeling that motivated I end up trying to recreate sounds or songs. That way you accomplish something and there's a concrete goal in front of you to accomplish (pretty much becomes a video game for me at that point).

Honestly, I don't stay motivated all the time. I'm really frequently at a loss when it comes to creativity and stuff. The best thing to do is stay positive. Maybe once in a while stop listening to your favorite music. Take a week long break and listen to nothing but classical or jazz or something, completely ignore soundcloud, etc. Sometimes all you need is a breath of fresh air and it all comes back to you.

Wow, that's a good method. Thanks for replying!

Always separate production from composition, it'll make your life easier and you'll be more motivated to do both. you won't be motivated if you have to think too deeply just to create a mix/song.

If you got cool melodies, write them down or just record them on your phone as an audio note. you'll be back to them later when you need ideas.

For production, just screw around with tools and create presets that you'll  find useful, when you'll be working on a song again you have something to use without thinking too much ahead.

And organize your DAW if you aren't planning to do music at all. bottom line, always do something with your DAW even when you don't have a full project.

I find that it helps to listen to / do things things that are outside of your comfort zone. Not only does it relieve you from the task that is preventing you from being motivated but it can also offer some cure that problem. Whether that cure is immediate inspiration or experience and ideas down the road shouldn't really matter. IMO its about always have different options that you can explore.

Listing to un finished tracks has always a big motivator. Easy to get hyped sifting through projects

I feel like motivation will always come in waves, I've had times where I can go a few months without feeling any motivation to write music. I think the key at that point is still trying to further yourself on the technical side of things. Also forcing yourself to sit down and just write something can usually spur some creativity/motivation.

I kinda just go through stages. There are some days all I want to do is produce. But then I have dry parts where I don't make anything for months.

You'll never be motivated all the time, I started to read heavily on self discipline when I realized I wasn't spending as much time as I could be on production and now I have a routine that I make sure to stick to and my productivity has gone through the roof.
i love you

It's not easy, and I don't think its really possible to stay motivated 24/7.. :(

I myself go thru stages where I can be inspired for months then go into a deep lull.  But tbh I think the best way is to make a habit of just making music so even if your not inspired you'll still be able to work.

I a lot of times get inspired by listening to other's work, like if its technically impressive and blows my mind it makes me excited to open up my DAW and fool around in it.

Short answer, I don't! Thats okay though. I'm always inspired by SOMETHING, that something isn't always music-related though. Could be a book, an album, a language, a country, a painter, ect.

This is good advice. Its such a bummer when I'm in the middle of writing a song and I have to spend half an hour messing around in massive and saturator just to get one sound I could have made a week ago. It really kills the momentum!

Honestly watching Skrillex's old tour docs is the most inspiring thing to me. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtNJ_OOOJQQ)

Watching the dude travel the world and meet cool people and living the life just by making music and doing what he loves, probably the most inspiring thing to me.

I ran into this exact scenario tonight.

I started working on a track, and had some decent success, I was finding elements I wanted to put in the track easily, and I made them fit together well, I was really feeling it, but then out of nowhere, I hit a wall. Now I saved the project, and had to get away from my production area. I don't know how to best fight past that and keep working on it, or just keep working on music in general.

I'd love to hear your tips on this all too often occurring problem.
