Why do you do it?
« on: January 07, 2016, 08:43:42 pm »
This might not necessarily be perfectly on topic for composition/arrangement/theory, but I figure this probably directly effects the choices you make during this process, and I didn't know where else to post it.

Why do you make what you make?

I want to know what makes all of you guys wake up every morning and go to your computer to start hammering away at your DAW. I've been running out of answers to this question myself lately, and I think it would be beneficial to hear what you have to say!

I started making music because I saw people like Skrillex touring and thought "damn I want to do that!" ;D

Obviously now i've grown out of that a little...

I think it's just really gratifying to have a piece of art you can call your own. Having a song which is personal to you and having some kind of emotional connection to a piece of music is a feeling you can't really get anywhere else in my opinion :)

I love going to festivals, I love raving with my entire squad and listening to crazy ass drops and I love partying.

I wake up every morning and want to be able to say, damn, all these people are listening to something I created and are having the time of their lives. I want to inspire people. I want to evoke emotions and happiness that people may otherwise not experience.

Of course getting to that level is not easy and means sacrifices must be made. That sacrifice is not partying now so that I can party later. It means giving up all free time to develop my craft and master this art. Sacrifice TV, video games, hanging out with friends every night, smoking weed all day (sometimes I smoke at night to have a different perspective on my art).

Work hard now, party later.

That is a huge reason that's kept me going this whole time =)

For me personally, nothing beats the feeling of creating a song that perfectly expresses your emotions at the time. Whether it is arrogant or not I don't know, but I love the music I make and want to share it with other people so that they can experience the same emotions I have when listening to the tracks.

I do it for multiple reasons, but the main and original I stand by is because I love it. Not only music production, but Creation. Creation with not only myself, but other people, is one of the most enjoyable activities that I live for, and it's amazing how far you can take your skill in what you like to create to. I find it so inspiring how so many people can come together and just create. If it's something where I get to express myself, I'll take it, Music was one of the first things that caught on to me in this.

I've started doing a few other activities, but Music will definitely be the main thing that I love to create so much.

I literally just wrote about 400 words of why I love music so much, until I realised I wasn't really answering the question.

So yeah, I really really really like music and I really really really want to be part of it.

I don't think you should look at why other people do it though. I used to do this a lot, and got really demotivated because I thought I was in it for the wrong reasons, when it really doesn't matter what reasons you have (unless you're going for world domination or something, I think there's better ways than music to achieve that).

Like probably 100% of producers. I liked music, I wanted to try and I stick to making music since.

This. I liked trance back in the days and I thought making my own songs would be nice.

Art for the sake of art. So much of our world is changing rapidly and going to shit, but music isn't going anywhere. It's exciting to be creative and expressive in a day where we have thousands of unique tools at our fingertips! And we can use those tools to spread the various emotions we feel on a day to day basis.

I make music purely because it's super fun and a good way to express myself musically. I have pieces of art that I can truly say are my own and that's something really cool to me.

I love any and every form of art, you name it. Music production, composition, and performance just happen to be my favorite. I don't think I'll be more passionate about anything else ever.

I make and play music because it relaxes me. Not much else that isn't chemical can do this for me, except perhaps intimacy... but even that can't make you forget about life like some good tunes played through some quality speakers.

Because I love solving puzzles, so making music is just an ever-more-complex series of puzzles for me to figure out. The biggest driving factor for me has always been the joy of discovery, and being able to always have something fresh and new to learn and figure out.

Also to prove everyone who said I couldn't do it wrong.
