Your favourite Hardware Synths...?!
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:02:14 pm »
My alltime favourite is (until this day) the Clavia Nord Lead 3!
Can be aggressive, Fat, (kinda) analogue, sweet - and it looks great. Haven't really tried the newer ones (except a couple of minutes at NAMM last year), so can't judge them.

Also amongst my favs is my beloved Roland JP8080 (JP8000 rack version). A classic of trance, it is famous for it's supersaw, heavily used from the end of 90's onwards... Unfortunately mine is very buggy and needs repairs every now and then - otherwise really awesome.

Another great one I like to recommend is the Dave Smith Prophet 08 - analogue, can sound "heavy", "dirty" and "dreamy" at the same time.

Also used all kinds of Virus models over the years, great allrounders, but I personally prefer the sound characters of the synths above more.

What's your favourite Hardware Synths?

My Moog Sub 37 trumps any software that I've got. You can get the richest analogue sounds from that thing which really can't be replicated. Most of my basslines and leads come from it.

I miss my Nord Lead 2X. It's the only thing I regret selling. The Moog Sub 37, Nord Lead 2X/3/4 and Virus Ti2 are a great combo. That's just my personal preference.

Oh man, seeing those modules make me jealous. I don't have the luxuries for hard synths.

I don't own any hard synths myself but I once had the opportunity to try a Moog Voyager XL and it was absolutely stunning ;D

From what I see, there is at least 3000$ of hardware there. I want that so bad.

What would be recommended for someone looking to dip their toes into the realm of hardware synthesis? Is it worth getting any of the newer, cheaper units like the Arturia MiniBrute or small Moog offerings, or should I save up towards a grand and get something really decent?

Matt, that picture just makes me drool. Do you use any of the Mutable Instruments modules?
Build it, and they will come.
