Thanks guys! That Sub 37 looks really impressive.

Matt, I had my eye on the Mutable DIY kits they had (the Shruthi I think), and I thought I recognized some of their modular units in the pic. Really interesting sound shapers.
Build it, and they will come.

Most VA's these days are just software in a box. They do have da/AD converters in which some cases make them sound better than others. I love the virus but aside from that nothing excites me these days. There is no such true analog and that is where it's at. Everytime u press a key it's different. Not worth the cost in maintence to keep an old synth.

So if I would have to pick I would day the virus ti and a Waldorf q. My q is out of commission and I miss it a lot.

My favorites that I own are SCI Pro One, Roland SH-09 and Roland Juno Alpha.

My favorites that I've used and wish that I owned:
1. OSCar - it's fucking awesome! best bandpass filter I've ever heard
2. Crumar Spirit - surprisingly gnarly, lots of character
3. Oberheim Xpander
4. Hartmann Neuron

Man, the xpander is probably my favorite analog synth too.

I love my Moog Slim Phatty. Software can't even come close to replicating the filter and overdrive on this thing.

What would be recommended for someone looking to dip their toes into the realm of hardware synthesis? Is it worth getting any of the newer, cheaper units like the Arturia MiniBrute or small Moog offerings, or should I save up towards a grand and get something really decent?

Matt, that picture just makes me drool. Do you use any of the Mutable Instruments modules?

I'd recommend the minibrute. It's quite a versatile synth with lots of features for a very low price (especially since the microbrute came out.) I've used it on a bunch of my tracks. My favorite features are the multi-mode steiner parker filter (sounds great and a lot of higher end analog synths, like my moog sub37, only have a LP filter) and the white noise oscillator (sounds great when thrown through the filter.

I don't own much analog gear, but one of the pieces of gear is the Moog Sub 37 synth. A ton of versatility combined with that vintage Moog sound. Also, there is incredible depth in the filter section. Love it!

My favorites that I own are SCI Pro One, Roland SH-09 and Roland Juno Alpha.

I had a Pro One after coveting it for years and the thing that most surprised me about it is the shitty build!  Great sound (did a track with a huge bass from it) but definitely a budget release.  As for the J-Wire keyboard...

Switch from AJ to MKS50, still a sorely under-rated Roland, and unlike the other under-rated JX3p, the AJs can be fully programmed from midi.  They're can't compete with anything that has an IR3109 filter but they are equal to a JX8P at least.

Favourites I own -

Roland System 1 - I'll defend to the hilt, the SH-101 plug out is spot on and the System 1 synth is very worthy.
Yamaha CS01 - PWM like no other, a beast in a Casio case
Elektron Analog Four - Has that warm Roland sound, plus Overbridge DAW integration.

Favourites I sold :( -

Roland JX3P - Gorgeous pads and now going up in price.
Roland JX10 - The lushest, warmest 80s pads I ever heard but a total dog to program
Yamaha AN1X - Sorely underrated, equal or better than the JP8000, please make a module (not the AN200)
Roland JD800 - The look, the sound but sadly the size too.

Worst: Roland JV1080 - so uninspiring, a real bland pop toolbox.

Just recently got my hands on the Moog Minitaur. Small price, smaller footprint and great filter.

Current favorite is the Moog Mother 32.  I haven't had much time to play with it though and I already regret not buying 3. I did get some nice basslines patched up and recorded by running midi in from Ableton. Got a new Strymon Pedal in the post that I can't wait to hook up to the MoM!
