Your Favourite Reference Tracks
« on: January 07, 2016, 12:54:41 pm »
My first post so it's a good opportunity to thank Matan for this great TPF idea  ;)

Question for all: what are your favourite reference tracks when mixing your EDM projects?

A lot of the mau5trap stuff is my go-to. Mau5 stuff, Eekkoo tracks, No Mana. Can't go wrong with those. More specifically; Deadmau5 - The Veldt, Eekkoo - B.L.A.C.K, and No Mana - Redux are three that are in my arsenal.

Thats a tough one...

My go to reference tracks are usually pop actually (Taylor Swift, Carly Ray Jepsen, One Direction) simply because I love the structure pop tracks have and I find it challenges me nicely to have a reference track in a different genre to what I normally make.

Bounce Generation by TJR & VINAI. When I make that switch from listening to that track to my track its always easy to tell if my track isn't banging. I know this isn't really a reference track but a good way to reference tracks also is to DJ mix and if your tracks aren't holding up with the other tracks boom then you know you need more work.

Open Eye Signal by Jon Hopkins. The mix feels so solid to me.

That is a cool idea. I think I will test drive it. I usually choose a track in similar style, that I emotionally connect with. One that brings out feelings that I would want to portray in my track. It is always changing as there is so much new music coming out all the time. I usually choose a different track for each project I'm doing.

Yes, thats important. I think you need to change your reference track multiple times for each song. If you get stuck with the same one, your ears get used to it and you remove the purpose of a reference track in the first place.

P.S. I love typing the word reference on a qwerty keyboard. The letters are perfect spaces apart  :D

For melodic dubstep: Seven Lions - Fevers

So much power in that drop.

For the past little while I've been using Tetsuo's Redemption by KOAN Sound as a reference track

I'll say that Porter's Nero remix was criticized by a lot of people because of the mixing levels (the drop was SOO much louder than the rest of the track), so I'm not sure that would be the one I chose, but...different strokes for different folks.

I use Deadmau5, some of Porter's other tracks off of Worlds, Andrew Bayer (Do Androids Dream Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 is a great start)...a lot of the anjunabeats guys have really good mixdowns (Jason Ross, Ilan Bluestone, Grum).  Eric Prydz is also a good candidate.
