I tend to use something similar to the genre I'm creating. I tend to create a lot of different genres so for example:
Progressive References:  Many guys here but id probably stick to Prydz or Deadmau5 stuff because they are punchy yet dynamic.
Deeper Progressive stuff: Guy J's music is a fine example of Deeper progressive music to reference.
Techno / techy stuff: Usually stuff by Mark knight, Dosem or maybe Hot since 82 tracks. They are engineered in a way to sound really big in clubs. Crisp drums and bass.

Also an artist I will throw in there for reference tracks is Joris Voorn. His stuff is really nicely engineered. Great reverbs and space, great drum programming and great dynamic variation to his music. Everything is so well balanced.

Word. Nice to see a mention of Dosem too, his production is tight.

Great thread idea!

i wonder why nobody mentioned Calvin Harris yet. His mix downs  really sound expensive - reference how deep is your love - so extremely open...
Also newer Zedd stuff sounds incredible - the vocals in "beautiful now" sit so well - his engineer Ryan is also incredible ...
Also Cosmic Gate & Jerome Isma-ae- Telefunken for clubbier stuff and anything recent by Above & Beyond & Prydz. Especially The new Prydz stuff sounds so smooth and analogue - almost like no "digitalitis" at all...
Also worth checking out is Robert Babicz productions - probably amongst the best engineered electronic productions out there.

Also the way "Daft punk - get lucky" sounds is insane. Mick Guzauski (the engineer) is just incredible...

recently I've been using Porter robinson's remix of the Thrill by nero, Language by porter robinson, Technicolor by Madeon, and Grey's remix of Papercut by zedd . I loveee the mix and feeling of those four so much
I'll say that Porter's Nero remix was criticized by a lot of people because of the mixing levels (the drop was SOO much louder than the rest of the track), so I'm not sure that would be the one I chose, but...different strokes for different folks.

I definitely agree with the criticisms. That mix was not one of his best ones imo. I'd say the songs from Worlds would be a lot better to use as reference track.
still calibrating & still figuring things out ٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و
