if it sounds good use it, i find most presets unusable though as they're generally more geared to showing off the synth rather than being functional in a song

As long as you know what the tune needs, everything is valid!

I'm guilty of unobjective aversion against presets. I always felt like making your own sound and then playing it is the best thing about electronic music. Having said that I have to admit, sometimes there is just not enough time. Especially when making track for someone or against a deadline. Then I use presets tweaked to liking. On the other hand, there's still much greater satisfaction when you listen to sound you've made yourself. It depends on one's goals I guess...

I agree with a lot of the sentiment already expressed in this thread. I find them to be a useful tool, but I would advise to not lean on them as a crutch, if you wish to really master crafting your own sounds. With that said, instruments like the DX-7 have some of the most iconic presets out there, and they sound incredibly good on their own, and do not necessarily need any further tweaking.

...and name them properly otherwise you end up like me, having bunch of custom presets with no f***ing way to navigate yourself to the right one when needed. :D

I think that using presets is fine. It is important though to have some knowledge of synthesis and sound design. It's important to know hoe to modify and shape the attack  decay, sustain and release envelope of sounds. Also, playing around with detune and filter envelope can help with getting the sound to fit the mix. I usually turn off all of the effects that are included in a preset, and use my own. One thing about presets is that it takes time flipping through them. I like to design my own sounds because sometimes it's faster. If you're looking for a marquee sound to be a signature piece of a track,  flipping through presets may take a long, long time. This is where learning sound design would really help.

I use presets as a basis to begin sound design in most cases. Especially in instruments such as Serum & Omnisphere.  It's most likely best to give your own spin on the sound to make it unique to you, but I really see no problem with presets, given you don't choose one that sounds entirely abstract to the point where it's gross.

I don't mind them, I use them & I make my own sounds. Definitely a good starting point for those looking to learn more about synthesis & what everything does. Don't be scared either, tweak anything & everything just to see what it does.

Presets are good as the sounds you make, both are good ways, the real challenge is to arrange them in meaningful ways and correctly. Of course, don't jump at presets blindly but know how to tweak them as needed. However, I feel certain sounds should not come from presets. In dubstep, for example, I think every producer should make his own basses/patches, maybe imitate other existing sounds, but don't just download and use patches from sample sites, because in dubstep, especially in the drops, sound design is key. This is only my opinion tho, then everyone does whatever wants.

if you like the sound of the preset, use it. if you dont, use that preset as a starting point.

I wouldn't be getting anywhere without presets. I don't want to spend time on sound design right now, because I want my songs to be better structurally, and making songs would take me forever if they didn't exist. However, I do tweak them a little bit so I get the sound I want.

the problem is most people don't.  At least when you're starting out it's better, imho, to start from a blank initialized setting and to learn from there, as opposed to reverse engineering something you don't understand.
