F**k S**t Up plug-ins
« on: January 06, 2016, 09:05:17 pm »
It's funny because I've been asked this question in an interview for Beat Mag and I could have written a book about it, since my music is quite glitch- and stutter-based. The question was initially regarding these plug-ins being a "temptation one should resist in your opinion, or actually an improvement", but I'm just curious about your choices.

To me, FSU Plug-ins are a 'complextro'/dubstep producer best friend when hitting a writer's block or when simply too lazy to edit tiny glitches by hand, which don't stand as a significant, memorable part of the track. Illformed's Glitch2 and StutterEdit with BT's awesome banks are my favourites, not only for live performances. For additional crazy movement, Fabfilter Saturn or Timeless2 seem to be doing cool stuff when EQd and controlled properly.

What are your go-to FSUs?

Destroy FX "Buffer Override"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBhMytf921I

this plugin emulates the sound of when your daw gives up on life and (as you call it) Fucks Shit Up lmao - perfect for glitchy sounds

It sounds basic, but I really like Ableton's Overdrive and Redux, together they can make stuff sounds nasty :) Then again I don't tend to make many f*cked up sounds in my style ;D

Huge fan by the way Xilent! :D

Fracture by Glitch Machines is nice when chained in serial with some of the plugins you mentioned, along with Gross Beat.
iZotope Stutter Edit can get glitchy fast & sounds epic at times.
For this kind of stuff I usually just bounce in a sampler like DirectWave (or Kontakt), map the sample start position to velocity/lfos/whatever. Then try different grooves in midi while that is happening.
Sometimes I will throw in a unique distortion plugin like epicentre (free) which has a lot of algorhythms & settings to tweak for creating new sounds.

If you have FL, Gross Beat is so fucking cool but hard to understand. When you do, you can do really complex shit with it.

DtBlkFx by Darrell Barrell is one of my faves. Beast for making 'Windowlicker'-type sounds.

Reason's Alligator plugin can be used to completely alter a sound and its rhythm via filter gating, resulting in really glitchy sounds if you tweak it the right way. It's really fun to throw on atmospheric samples and pads, among other things.

http://illformed.org/ The original version of dBlue Glitch is great for this kinda stuff, it's free too. Glitch 2 is $60 bucks and I've heard good things about it, though I'm not sure how it compares to Sugar Bytes Effectrix, which also does this kinda stuff. Sugar Bytes also does Turnado which is good for this kinda stuff, though it's more for realtime performance like Stutter Edit.

Edit: Also hey Xilent, I remember when you features 1ft on that stream you did. Just wanted to say thanks burh

the new infected mushroom plugin looks like the epitome of a FSU plugin.  Resampling this thing seems so fun

Here's a video of it in action ^

KT Granulator was a great free fuckshitup plugin, but I just looked now and it's been updated, and you have to pay for it :/

The main reason I use Glitch2 was their Tape Stop fx but I love to use the Lo-Fi or the Stretcher sometimes
