DONT MIX WITH ANY HEADPHONES MADE BY BEATS BY DRE!
« on: January 06, 2016, 07:22:19 pm »
Very Important !!! Beats like to turn up the bass in the headphones they make, so when you mix with their products, you are not listening to an accurate representation of your actual song :)

They may be fashionable, and make that Skrillex remix your listenin' too sound like its on steroids, but make sure you use some nice simple Studio/Mixing headphones when working on your new killer dubstep track, and Listen to how amazing it sounds after your finished with it on your sexy green Beats Mixrs ;P

Hope this advice helps!

I didn't think this would really need to be said, but you never know. I say don't even use anything that's not explicitly for monitoring.

Well that's not true. You can reference on unprofessional speakers/headphones, but don't use them while actually modifying anything in the mix.

I think it's a better advice to know how your headphones sound (compared to studio-grade gear) and use good references while mixing.

I think it is pretty common knowledge, but it can't hurt, becuase who knows, someone may just be starting out and not know what equipment is good for the studio and what should just be used for pleasure listening

honestly i feel like you can mix on anything you want.  this has been stated by many producers.  yes it might be best to mix on the best studio monitors that are available in the bets room with the best acoustics in it.... but.... many producers say they mix on the worst of the worst.

and mixing on the beats is fine as long as when you test in your car or monitors or headphones and even your laptop speakers, that the final product sounds good across all of them.

you just need to know what the final product should sound like and then you can go right back and amp up that bass if it wasn't enough in the first place... just because you thought it was enough because of the beats boosting it doesn't mean you can't go right back after testing on other systems and boost it more because you were wrong.

good luck in your mixing!!

Actually, not to say you're wrong because your point is very valid, but Beats by Dre are some of the most popular headphones out there right now. It wouldn't hurt to have a pair that you can test out a mix on to make sure that people who have Beats will enjoy listening to your music.

I'm pretty positive Skrillex does his mixdowns on Beats by Dre, obviously we're not all Skrillex but as long as you're used to the headphones you're mixing with then you should be able to compensate. I'm a firm believer of constantly referencing your mixdowns with well produced songs (my FL studio template is literally just "Flicker" by Porter Robinson to use as a reference track, lol), which will keep your ears in check regardless of what headphones you use.
i love you

One of my favorite websites (http://headphone.com) has a great graph generator for headphones, where you can see how they respond to a large group of tests.

Here is the Beats vs the AudioTechnica ATH-50s

Skrillex has said before that he uses ATH-M50s to mix his tunes.

Oops, my bad! You're right I just googled it and I don't know where I got the beats thing because I can't find anything other than he apparently uses them for live performances. I still stand by the second part of my post, though.  :-X
i love you

It kinda grinds my gears when people say don't mix with headphones, only monitors. As long as you know your headphones, and constantly reference with other tracks you like, there isn't a problem.

Came here to say this. I use beats to mix. They sound great. It doesn't really matter what you mix on, as long as it's not shit and you use reference tracks and you have a good idea for how they sound.

I would never use anything other than studio headphones designed for monitoring. I want to hear the true sound when working on a track without any coloring - and I'm not bothered what these headphones look like. Great headphones of that kind don't have to be expensive, I'm using the Beyerdynamics DT 990 Pro and I'm more than happy with them, I've recommended them countless of times and everyone's happy with them. While BEATS might look cool for a live gig (or as a sponsor lol), for music production it would annoy the hell out of me knowing that I'm mixing on headphones that don't give me a precise linear sound.

I got a pair of beats earbuds for channukah and i can already tell how different they are from my HD600s or my SRH750s. I remember watching a video of SeamlessR with Savant - who uses Beats headphones. He mentioned (and I think it's pretty accurate) that sound like a car stereo system. The bass is heavy, and the treble is a little scooped out. I could see myself using them as a way to get a rough idea of how that environment would sound (don't own a car), but definitely not your typical headphones.
