Why Are Producers So Young Nowadays?
« on: May 09, 2016, 04:20:41 pm »
Seriously. Madeon, Zedd, Juventa, Porter, Nitrofun, Grey, Au5, WRLD...

I feel like so many of these producers are like 18-25 or became successful at around that time period.

Even on this forum. I noticed a lot of us are college students. Maybe I have a confirmation bias?

Rob Swire's 33, both Pegboard Nerds are in their late 30s, Calvin Harris is 32, and let's not forget that the godfather of dance music Moroder is still making music and he's over 75 years old.

I'm turning 28 this year. :P

Maybe kids nowadays have more time, letting Wolfram Alpha do their homework? 30 this year, yet to become successful.

Software is easy accessible nowadays.

The things you can do with any daw now, or even a simple smartphone, could only be done in the 60's, 70' 80's and 90's when you had access to a studio which had a huge cost.

When more people have access, more talent will arise.

I'm the living proof of the opposite; I'm old (43) and unsuccessful. :p

25 with little to none success here. I've noticed it too. I'm actually slowly growing respect for older guys managing to do kickass music. I'm not saying young guys have it easier. Not at all. ...but refusing thought about not being talented enough gets harder with age. Especially when much younger guys are totally killing it at the same time. Bareaking from this is imho not easy.

29 years old here.  I think maybe one reason the thought of "young producers" is present is because a lot of them frequent forums and other electronic feedback devices.  In other words, young people utilize and are more "active" on social media and other Internet means that "older people" (since when did 30 become old? haha).

Also, societally, things are geared towards the younger generation. Music, advertisements, media, products, fashion...all are heaviliy skewed towards young people.  Sad, really.

I'm 21 lol. Started when I was 18. Would've been best to start when I was 16 but I guess 18's not to bad haha. But yeah, dance music is obviously made for (not always anymore lol) for dancing, which means that its largest audience will be the people that go to festivals, clubs and parties. Those people are mostly teenagers and young adults so its not strange most producer start in their teens.

hmm yeah. but dont think too much about that @lydian i don't think you would have mastered your craft in your 20's

dont forget there are still very older producers in the game who are very experienced, these guys are really smart

I know an experienced producer in the electronic business (100+ releases) and he's aint in the 20 bracket

but yeah there are lots of kids with ableton or FL studio

Honestly, I feel kinda of pressured at times because of it. I know it's irrational because it's not like you need to be successful in your 20's but the older I get the more I see free time becoming less accessible.

Kinda just motivates me to practice harder before this stage of my life runs out.

I'm turning 15 two months later, but I just produce crappy music and I don't know if I have talent.
It's nothing about the age - It's about when you discover your talent or passion, and how much effort you put in it.

I wouldn't say discouraged. They obviously worked really hard for a long time. (much longer than me) Pressured would be more accurate because although I run a business that makes me enough passive income to survive on that will change in 4-5 years when my expenses begin to increase.

I've worked full time before and gone to school full time so I know the struggle. I want to at least take advantage of the free amount I have now so I can avoid that fate.

trying to compete with someone else's life is a really crappy way to live your own.
