It is not super important. You can create great songs just by feel but learning music theory can really help you understand which chords usually go together, how to make things sound a bit different but have the same musical movement, and knowing the scales. In my opinion its up to the producer if they feel like they need it or not!

What the guy above me says I agree.

What i would like to add is that in my opinion it is really important to at least know how the basic chords are made. And how they fit into scales. Everything else you can do by just pressing buttons. But knowing which notes certainly will not fit your song will save a lot of time.

This should help. If you dont already know.

maybe not. but to become a great and beyond that, you need to understand music theory. often times you see the piano roll to be full of so many notes (with the basis of "if
i had more notes then it's cooler" or etc.) and you don't need that many often times.
+ understanding music theory helps you get to the emotion you want to evoke
+ if you want to make something with jazz/blues touch on it, you def need to learn that~

I always say this:
- Music theory is not necessary, however it can be a good addition to your 'toolbox'. It wont help you 'suddenly' write better songs, but it will help you understand why some chord progressions sound good (or bad) or why chords and melodies can hold tension and have a sense of movement etc.

I know great producers/musicians who know theory and i know others who don't know theory. At the end of the day its all got to do with how good you're at coming up with catchy, original stuff.

Id say the fundamentals of music theory are super key to being a real efficient producer, and being able to communicate your musical ideas intelligently to other people. A decent grasp on the fundamentals of Key, Minor/Major Scales, Diatonic Chord progression, and Rhythm will absolutely improve your workflow and musical ideas in my opinion.

It will make many things so much easier for you. If you're asking, is it worth the time investment to learn: yes, it absolutely is.

While no one here is necessarily wrong, something that has not been brought up are YOUR goals. What do you want to accomplish with producing music? If you simply want to maintain a hobby, and you find that you are not inhibited by your lack of konwledge about music theory- then it is probably not important. If you want to turn your production skills into a profitable career, and you find that you are hitting road blocks in terms of your ability to convey your musical ideas- then theory might be something you want to learn.

Is it "necessary"? No. Is it incredibly useful? Yes. Would I implore you to learn it regardless? Yes. Do you have to do it to enjoy listening to or making music? No.

It's all a matter of preference, but I will tell you that learning the fundamentals of music theory has helped me shorten the learning curve when it comes to arrangement/composition, melodies, and harmonies. It's akin to knowing the function for the equation in Excel as opposed to solving the polynomial by hand on paper.

I want to know is music theory really important to become a good Electronic Producer ???

This kind of depends on what you want to do really. Do you want to be a really good producer? Do you want to be a really good musician? Both? Do you plan on making music for films and video games etc.? It all depends on what you want to do.

If you want to become a really good sound designer and make production porn, then music theory might not be necessary. If you want to make really good art and music that connects with people on an emotional level then music theory is an amazing tool. I'm not saying that production isn't art, but I'm sure you get my point.

I thought for a long time that learning music theory would put my mindset in a "box" and it would inhibit my ability to be truly creative. That is not true at all, actually quite the opposite. When you understand the fundamentals of music theory; scales, melodies, chords, arrangement, etc. you can much more easily express the feelings and emotions you want. This is important if you want to make film or video game music, because being able to put a certain feel and emotion in the viewer/player is absolutely key. Sure you can just write what feels right and still convey a certain feeling, but music theory will help you so much and spare you a lot of trouble. If you know nothing about music theory and want to make a sad or dramatic sounding track, you will probably write it in minor because it just feels right. Knowing WHY you do that is important in my opinion, and it can help you write elements that fit the rest of the track much more easily.

So, the answer is pretty much "it depends". It is certainly helpful to you no matter what you make, but it is not necessary. But then again, is knowing FM synthesis necessary to produce a track? No, but learning it will help you tremendously. Also, learning the fundamentals of music theory is really not that hard.

This is actually a great comparison

I think that honestly, if you're going into music with the mentality of making music, then yes, theory is going to be your toolkit. A musician without music theory is like an untrained carpenter. You can work your way around thorugh feeling and what 'sounds right' but its going to be a LOT of trial and error that will take up way more of your time than if you invest in learning theory. sure if you just wanna make beats or something then by all means go ahead and focus on your production and dont pay attention to theory because youre not going to need to know a ton about borrowed chords or key changing or anything.
if you want to be good, then no you wont need it, if you want to be GREAT then yes, learn it, use it, love it.
no one 'likes' going to the basics and learning the beginner seemingly unimportant stuff but if you can properly apply it, it'll be what sets you apart from a 'beat maker' to a musician. IMO

You should definitely know what a scale is and how they work, and know what a chord is. The rest is extra to be honest.

In my opinion you don't need theory to be 'good' but you definitely need theory to be the best you can be.

The ability to understand what you're writing instead of just playing by ear saves you a lot of time searching for the 'right' notes/harmonies and can lead to really really interesting tracks.

To me, creativity and making a track "fun" is all about breaking the rules. To break the rules you need to know them.

Or you could be like Einstein and create your own rules to break, I guess... But that's a pretty hard thing to do. There has only been one Einstein in like 200 years after all.

Ive been studying music theory for awhile and yeah it really helped me understand why certain notes go together, what chords work together, why do they sound a certain way. But then being creative with the theory you understand can really make you stand out.
