WAVO competitions a joke?
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:13:42 am »
I wasn't entirely sure where to post this, but it has seriously knocked my inspiration recently so I thought I'd go here.

I recently entered the remix competition for Hardwell's Mad World. Yes I know that the world will be saturated with Mad World remixes for the next month but I genuinely do love the vocals and wanted to put my own spin on it.

I made a future bass remix, which might not be earth-shattering but it is pretty good if I may say so myself. Yet it sits down in 84th place in the charts. Don't get me wrong some of the entrants above me a very very well produced. But some are just a joke.

7th place with 200+ votes sounds like a 12 year olds first remix. I'm all for encouraging young kids to produce, but the quality of that remix is just poor and does not deserve 200 votes or 7th place in the charts.

Then we come to 8th place, again with over 200 votes. It is a mashup. Made on virtual DJ. It shouldn't even be entered it in to the competition yet it is pushing my remix well down the charts.

I'm starting to think these competitions are just a popularity contest and I'm not sure they're worth my time anymore?

Any one else find the same thing?

Hey dude!

Sadly yes, these contest are defiantly based off of popularity. It makes sense anyways since it works off a voting system. The people with the biggest fan base will obviously win when they ask there fans to go vote for them.

Yeah, its just frustrating when there are people with fan bases much larger than the quality of their music warrants! Fingers crossed with the size of his team Hardwell will be able to listen to all entries!

That's pretty much how it goes unfortunately. Not a whole lot you can do to change that aspect of human nature.

The hip hop producer Blockhead has been making beats for something like 15 years, and in a couple of recent blog posts he said that talent is probably about 4th or 5th on the list of things you need to make it big, behind connections, hard work, timing and just dumb luck.

I tend to agree with the notion that if you make music first and foremost for yourself, stuff like that won't bother you so much. On top of which, you're likely to make better music.

Yeah I agree, recognition and exposure isn't necessarily everything, and at the day I would've wanted to make the remix of regardless of the competition, but still just frustrating!

It is frustrating for sure, I've been there. The thing that's worked for me is just trying to talk myself out of it, and over time I've found it easier and easier to let those kind of things slide.

Splice isn't much better for remix comps. Avoid anything that involves voting, even if they say it'll be judged. If the votes didn't count for anything, they wouldn't have them to begin with.

Remix competitions are a great way to grab vocal stems and to just practice remixing - and if nothing else just release it as a bootleg or change some of the elements around and remake it as an original! You can still get attention from it.

Yeah, if you read the terms thoroughly. Some comps won't even let you put your mix on SoundCloud. I learned this the hard way.

I totally know how you feel, but I will say that the one's that are at the "Top" usually aren't the ones that win.

In the Zedd remix, I was top 10 but someone who wasn't in the charts won (because there remix was good)

Also in the Chainsmokers one, someone who had like 20 votes won. It was cool cause the guy who won happened to live in the same city as me, so I hit him up & we had a session together. So I wouldn't say they're completely a waste, and as under 500 people enter the competition it's safe to say that your remix will be heard by the Artist if it's good
~And so he took his pain & turned it into something beautiful. Something that people could connect to.

All good points, I definitely agree that they're good way to get some stems and vocals to use for future products.

I source remix contests for Splice and voting does not matter at all. Every remix/submission is heard in our competitions (whether by the label, artist, or Splice bros). None of our winners have been in the 'top 10' and were often submitted just before closing or low in the 'charts.' It's important to the label & artist to really find their favorite submission because they'll be promoting or officially releasing it. I believe voting/follow-to-download systems are gimmicky. We're exploring solutions and algorithms that can mitigate cheating with voting as well. If you guys have suggestions to improve remix contests or questions let me know!

Wanna know what i find fishy? The fact that the person who won the hardwell contest already had a few tracks of his played out by hardwell, and one signed to his label. I've seen a few established artist claim that the remix contests are often rigged, which I have a feeling stays true with this contest.
