From time to time it varies. My master chain usually goes like this: Leather handle, iron linked chain, then ball gag. Sorry wrong master chain.

1st subtle EQ - can consist of boosting & cutting but usually very wide and small amounts

2nd some sort of imaging - adding a slight chorus to higher Freq or Ozone stereo imager or M/S eq or distortion. (you don't need ozone you can use other multi bands that have stereo separation and/or stereo saturation)

3rd Compression - either it be a stock, waves or the maximizer on the soft or hard release (Setting differ from track)

4th Add a distortion plug in or something besides a limiter to cut it off.

I am not saying this is the only or even the "correct" way but this has worked for me.

There is absolutely nothing in my master channel except for an EQ and the DB meter for adjustments before i send it off for mastering :-)

ok without going into much detail it's actually something like:

Waves Center → SSL (Duende Native Bus Comp) → Maag EQ4 → Izotope Ozone 6 (Multiband Dynamics + Maximizer)

My master chain goes a little like this:

Using Ableton stock plugins and some that I already have cuz I'm poor

Many controls are linked to macros on an effect group on the master
EQ8 to dim down any high resonances>Multiband compression OR Glue compression (depends on the song)>Sausage fattener (veeerrly minimal - used for saturation and flavoring purposes)>if I don't use sausage fattener, I use stock Ableton saturator>EQ8 with flavoring in either highs or lows (depends on song)>Limiter6>Flux stereo Imager>Spectrum analyzer

I want to make this a little more precise, but I'm still learning how to master properly, so this will probably change in time.
I always master with audio stems at below -6dB, so I know that's all good and dandy already.

I heard from Virtual Riot he sometimes uses Waves Maserati GRP for adding extra loudness without distortion on top of an Ozone chain with Maximizer, do you have experience about that plugin or that use of it as a mastering plugin?

I've never touched Maserati TBH before, I'll look it up. Thanks!

I never EQ the master bus, recently my master bus usually looks like this:

ozone maximizer (loudness)>oxford inflater with the clipping off (for filling in harmonics very slightly)>camel phat with everything off (to bring it back to 0)>oxford limiter (for a bit of extra loudness + slightly filling in harmonics again and limiting obviously)

I'm a bit surprised to see that people are using so many plugins on their master channels. Is there a specific reason you apply more effects to the master instead of doing it inside the mix somewhere or does it not matter?

I've noticed it too that there are quite a few people who tend to break a lot of the traditional 'rules' about throwing plugins on the master chain. I'm guilty of it as well. I like being able to master while I mix if I'm doing it myself rather than treating it as two separate processes.

Even if you don't master your track yourself, in some cases the mastering engineer, when checking the already mixed track for mastering, will tell you to fix something in the mix and re-send it to him. So, my reasoning is that, because I'm mastering my songs by myself, instead of wasting time closing my mixing project and opening my mastering project, I just put what I need on the master (Stereo Imager -> MB Compressor -> Linear EQ -> Maximizer -> Stereo Image Analyzer -> Spectrum Analyzer) and from time to time I use it to check how it feels like mastered (roughly) and compare it to references, then I turn it off and keep working on the track, jumping to the next sections I need to develop.

Hey so mastered my new track today and found some pretty nice thing !

So !

Utility to have -5 Db to get more headroom
J37 from Waves (Tape Recorder) Wich give a little bit of warmth in my mix
Ableton Eq M/S to cut Side 150hz so everything beside that point is Mono
Fabfilter Eq tu cut Everything 28Hz let me get more Headroom
Native Instrument Passive Eq to get some boost and cut where I needed
SSL Compressor to glue the overall thing (Not that much don't hit 4 GR)
Pro Q for little bit of surgical Eqing

And here's comes the limiter so
I've tried all the limiter I got , finally I Used Voxengo elephant then Pro L because Waves limiter in my opinion is really shitty , it cut the transient really fast and make the song crash instantly , with Elephant and Pro L I achieved a proper loud (mix -6.5 Rms loudest part) and still got the transient of my kick and the rest

Hope I Helped !
