What makes you different from everyone else? (Discussion)

The phrase of death often heard by amateur and professional electronic musicians alike: "There's millions of people out there doing the exact same thing you are!"

It kills us all, and we certainly hate hearing it. But it is not always true. Think for a bit. What do you do that you know is uniquely you? Something that sets you apart from being a generic anybody.

If you can't happen to find anything, ponder for a while, and think about some of the things you could do that will enhance the unique personality in your music!
Yes I'm a fukkin Pokémon fan in case you'd not gathered that.

I know it has been a issue seen on the EDM mainstream scene for 2-3 years now but does it really matter ? I mean, If we want to make a certain type of music, are we forced to innovate ?

Music exist know for a very long time, and there's not alot of chord progression that are actually unique. It probably happened to everyone at a certain time, when you remake the famous "toccata" arp from scratch without even knowing what you're doing.

Innovation comes by looking and trying to make like everyone else. that's my opinion, tho, could be wrong.

It's not really a phrase of death, especially not to professionals. Professionals understand that it is very hard to be truly unique and accept it, but amateurs start to dig their own grave when the thought of not being unique haunts them.

I stopped thinking about being unique a long time ago, I just do me, and if it's unique, then great!

Nothing makes me different. But that's because I've only been producing for ~9-10 months.

What makes me different as a producer is the melodies, the chords, and emotions I put into my productions. The thing that I bring to the table is my experiences throughout my life, I've gone through a lot of negative moments, but instead of letting those moments go to waste, I express them in my productions. Every chord, melody, idea I have reflects/references different moments in my life. That roller coaster of emotions I've experienced the last 10 years allows me to create music that uniquely reflects who I am.

For me I think location is one of the biggest things... I see a lot of artists coming out of big cities or towns near bigger cities at least, and i'm living in a small-ass college town in the middle of Kansas, surrounded by cattle pastures and even smaller towns. You know what the music scene is like here? There isn't one. There's country singers and Bon Jovi tribute bands basically. Venues? Forget it. If I want to experience any sort of live music I have to drive at least 3hrs to Lawrence, and if I want the good stuff it's 5hrs to either Denver or Kansas City (that's literally the only good thing about where I live - right between the two of them) - unfortunately since that often requires planning a whole vacation (I made a 1 day trip to Denver once.. tripppy maaan) I don't get to do it very often. There's also no opportunity for any sort of live performance out here. I've definitely considered attempting to DJ a house party, but it'd be a joke - people want rock, country, or mainstream hip-hop around here. I've feel like i've pretty much grown up on the internet and the isolated, FOMO-loaded, feeling of living out here gives me a drive to get out, share the music I love, and experience the world like no other. ...When I'm finally able to do that you bet i'm going to unleash myself full force haha...There's years of energy built up and it's gotta go somewhereeee.. :)

I really don't care what makes me different, I make music for me.  For a real long time, nobody, not even myself, liked my work... but I'm not in it to please, or to sell... I'm in it to learn.  To learn something I've always loved.

If along the way, I make a song that I like, then that's awesome.  If others like it, that's pretty awesome too, but honestly, I care more about learning enough to produce music that I don't hate.
If the truth can be... told...
so as to be... underSTOOOD...

I have no idea what makes me different. I just do what I do.

I can't say what makes me different but personally I don't let it bug me and just make what I enjoy. Of course, I do enjoy trying new and weird things in my music that I haven't done before but whether it's unique or not is subjective so I don't worry about it. Aslong as other's enjoy it aswell, I'm happy.

Being innovative without compromising on quality is not easy these days, but certainly not impossible. I think that my urge for doing that alone isnt what seperates me from others in the scene, but rather how I choose to try and accomplish that. Everyone approaches innovation from a different viewpoint, so most of us end up being unique even if we don't realize it at first. Our brains mostly get excited by fresh experiences, so it's almost fair to say that as long as you legitimately enjoy what you do you're probably already innovating to some degree.

With that being said, I dont think that someone who cannot see you as a unique person / artist will have much constructive feedback to offer, so be selective about what they tell you. Having your efforts passed off as being just like everyone else sounds barely helpful to me.

Interesting question. I've been producing in a bubble of my own taste for a while; not a lot of people hear my music, I work alone, and I don't force things. Because of this, my process has evolved to be much more personal and unique to me. The only goal is that I like it.

Besides that, I think I have a pretty evolved taste in music. Recently I've been listening to a lot of Kaaris (a french rapper), Grimes (incredible electronic producer and vocalist), Nero, Marina and the Diamonds, Elliphant (swedish crossover pop star), and Future. I really love artists that have made their own world within their art. My love for geography and culture also comes through when I'm making music.

I try and make things that inspire me, so by extension you can hear what I listen to in my music.

What makes me different from all the other people I know in the industry is I don't have any financial, or commercial ambitions, besides being able to do what I love every day, all day, and still afford food and shelter and the occasional bundle of plugins. I don't want everyone to hear my music either, I don't 'want the world to see my talent', I couldn't give two fucks if the whole world sees or not. I want to look at what I've made, lying on my deathbed with my family beside me and think "I did something great", and that's all I want.

Btw, don't think "oh hes so selfless" cus I'm not. This is totally an ego thing

I'm not naïve - I know the majority of the artists are doing this for commercial and financial gain - but surely there must be a few producers with as much passion as you? :(
