What makes me different from all the other people I know in the industry is I don't have any financial, or commercial ambitions, besides being able to do what I love every day, all day, and still afford food and shelter and the occasional bundle of plugins.

I'm not naïve - I know the majority of the artists are doing this for commercial and financial gain - but surely there must be a few producers with as much passion as you? :(

There totally are! Jake, Kill The Noise, is like that too, that's why we're friends. But the thing that separates him from me is he really wants the world to hear, and the world fucking should hear cus he's got a lot to say.

On that note, I don't think it really hurts for someone to want the world to hear their stuff as long as there's still passion behind their work.

That's fair; I don't think there is any problem with a producer wanting people to hear their music, it's when money and fame become the main motivator that it becomes a problem.

It's a strange question, but do you think you would prefer being less famous than you are? Less attention and all that? Or do you just not care how many people listen?

KTN never stops amazing me. He's one of those few guys where you can tell he's just making the music he wants to make, but that music just happens to be stuff that's easy to get into, and that a lot of people like.

Not sure about the world, but I do want to be able to play my music to people on a stage one day.
The money doesn't really matter, being able to play my own stuff is enough payment for me, and I'd be happier if no one had any idea who I was (I don't really like attention).
Not like the marshmello thing, people know him as marshmello, I just want to be a random dude with a track

It would be neat if my music was played on stage or something, but I produce my music for myself. I make stuff that sounds cool, beautiful, or powerful to me; stuff that I can listen to and enjoy. That's also why I share it for free. I'm not looking to make a profit. The money I've "invested" in VST's and my DAW has been returned tenfold in enjoyment value. Nothing is more relaxing after a day of work than firing up FL, loading up Hive, and playing fun melodies on my MIDI keyboard. Occasionally, I'll save some combination of melody and synth. Sometimes I'll get excited at one of these projects, and add some stuff. Sometimes I just want to do some sound design.

I average about an hour a day doing this. If I tried to do anything more, or tried to force it, I would lose that enjoyment and that creative freedom. It's also why it takes me at least a year to create a complete song. It's truly just a casual hobby, but such an exciting one!

I'd say a lot of artists are like that. There are people who hold full time 9-5 jobs and just make music at home and never release it. they just want to have that creative outlet

Yeah, and it doesn't hurt to have commercial ambition either. The problem starts when commercial ambition starts to interfere with the music.

I think I've been taking the wrong attitude, there's nothing wrong with marketing, it's just a matter of what you use it for.

Let me elaborate, I said I have no ambitions of reaching a wider audience, but now I realise that's cowardly. When you have something to say, you HAVE to reach a wider audience, as long as you're saying something you truly believe in and not just promoting yourself.

I massively respect a lot of what I'm hearing here. There's a lot of diversity, and polarizing opinions on the matter. Some of which I am learning from by just reading them myself.

-Emotion, which is key, regardless the emotion.

-Mat's trademark not giving a fuck - which is something I personally subscribe to myself. Don't do it for anything but the music, and yourself. Personally, the poverty line is WAY above my head, so I basically have a couple of bootlegged VSTs and a launchkey 25. The bootlegged synths I am not proud of, but you gotta do something. But with those small amount of resources, I can still do quite a bit, especially the more I learn sound design, but I digress.

-Location - That's a good one. It definitely plays a part in my projects, although living in the midwest and not moving is a special kind of hell.

-Those who don't try their hardest to make themselves different - And this is one I'm learning a lot from already. I've seen (very recently, like upon looking at these responses) that trying too hard to be abstract from the rest may be a bit of an interference when it comes to learning the mechanics of music. Thinking about it, it seems that maybe doing a few bootlegs and the like can be an excellent idea to be set off on my way to discovering my own musical style.

I think I'm going to benefit from my time here-

Yes I'm a fukkin Pokémon fan in case you'd not gathered that.

I don't want everyone to hear my music either, I don't 'want the world to see my talent', I couldn't give two fucks if the whole world sees or not. I want to look at what I've made, lying on my deathbed with my family beside me and think "I did something great", and that's all I want.

Btw, don't think "oh hes so selfless" cus I'm not. This is totally an ego thing

i watched queens of the stone age on austin city limits and they had an interview with Josh Homme and the lead guitar player (can't remember his name), but they said that as long as they can pay their phone bill, rent, and all the living stuff they're good.

I think what makes me different from other people is the fact that i draw on my ancestor's way of how music is presented, performed, and recorded. Cajun music has influenced me in a lot of ways, and there's a deep connection. I often finding myself paying respects to tradition and still embracing new ideas, that's the thing that i take in when composing electronic music. All the rich traditions from any point in time during music's evolution to what we have today. there's so much to draw on, and very little is utilized. I see other people pushing boundaries in ways, but not sure if the music as a whole is being pushed as it should be due to the time it took to get here.

I don't know if I do anything that makes me outwardly different, but I just create. I don't care if sounds like someone else, if it's too repetitive for someone else's taste, if someone thinks it sounds like shit, etc. I make what I make and I enjoy it. Very often I hear people not liking their own music or caring about what other people are saying about it. From the beginning of my journey, I've felt the opposite. At this point, it's me vs. myself. (Of course, that's not to say I don't appreciate con crit and take it to heart.)

Personally I have lots of things that make me different (I'm over 40; I have weird musical tastes; I started this in the 80s; I have at least 3 other careers; I don't care about making money with music either.)

But I've been through this whole "how to stand out" thing and there's one thing I know for sure:

If you've made 3-4 tracks and aren't sure how you're ever going to stand out from the pack... make more tracks. By the time you've made 50 you'll know what is different about you. You'll have your own distinct style. You might hate it. Sometimes I hate mine. but it will be yours alone.

the tracks you make are a reflection of who you are...
