WIPs / Re: House/Disco/Funk Effort - Feedback on the Mix Needed
« on: January 14, 2016, 02:22:58 am »
this is cool. reminds me of Oliver a little bit. definitely work with the vocals, they are out of place as it stands.

bass is good and tight. the groove is good too. Guitar could be panned a little bit closer to center and could get a little more volume. Overall I think the whole track could be a little louder. maybe compress a tiny bit more to get the RMS closer to the peak as well.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Pointlessness and music
« on: January 13, 2016, 05:05:34 pm »
this doesn't address your question head on, but it's the way that I look at it. as someone who almost only produces instrumental music, I don't write music to convey a specific message, but rather an emotion, and I don't think there is anything less powerful or important in that. The power of music lies in its ability to conjure up feelings and memories in the listener (more so that another other artistic medium, in my opinion). So is it pointless to try to create something that evokes an emotion in someone, inspires them, makes them remember something in their past (Even if the same song has a different effect on two different people) ? I think not-- I think it's valuable, and it's why most of us spend so much time listening to music.  For me, successfully doing that can be equally rewarding as getting a concrete message across.

its got a cool techy vibe. the kick is a little knocky--it could be better if it was a little fuller/deeper and if you took some of the knock out around 300-700hz. or try adding a Corpus > Kick Tight instance (if you're using ableton) to fatten it up.

clap could definitely be louder/more present/stronger in the second half, and you could experiment with some added syncopated hits. i think the hats/percussion could be glued together a little more with some light compression. or you could try to make them more of a focus by messing with their pitch over time or something like a flanger/phaser.

the bouncey groove is definitely there and i like when the keys come in in the second half.

i think if you polish it up and make all the sounds a little fuller and more precise, it could stand on its own as a minimal tech track (after adding some FX here and there like one shots but also maybe some risers that pitch up/down over long periods to maintain interest). it may need some more variation/additions in the percussion section (like switching to more open hats halfway thru; using bursts of white noise; adding more rhythmic percussion) but I think it's a good shell for tech house. you could even experiment with adding a vocal sample that loops, so people have something more to latch on to

reminded me of this a little in how its repetitive and then the piano comes in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwDQQfSK0as

updated the track---worked on the string section a little bit, worked on the percussion a little bit, changed the clap, re-mixed some of the parts, edited the fx/detuning on the melody and EQ'ed to help with fatigue

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Open vs closed back headphones
« on: January 13, 2016, 04:19:50 am »
for producing, as long as you can make your room quiet, you gotta go with open headphones (and monitors of course). I used closed for a while and then switched and it helped my mixing so much. It simulates space (in the way that monitors sound) much much much better which is important. It's also key that the open headphones you buy are relatively flat too.

thanks a lot! really nice to hear, especially after I've started to lose hope in the track after editing and listening for way too many hours. Definitely gonna try to perfect that pluck since its the main element of the track. Also good to hear regarding the clap--i was a little unsure of it as well.

WIPs / Re: Piano House!
« on: January 13, 2016, 12:33:49 am »
pretty nice progression--not sure about that third chord tho (the leading chord that just hits once). I know what youre going for but it sounds off. Also some of the notes in the "sax" are dissonant to the progression and the timbre of the instrument is just a little harsh. I would experiment with something more synthetic and electronic rather than going for this quasi-violin/sax hybrid. drums are good, def got a good groove going. You could also potentially work with a better piano synth/sample..its a little muted (once again I know what youre going for--kinda like Shadow Child's Piano Weapon, but I think it could be improved still). Also not sure how much I like the build, the way you choose to loop it kinda decreases the tension in my opinon.

its definitely a great start though, it has the potential to be a solid loungey piano track

Thanks! that is all super helpful...yeah I have a random LFO mapped to some fine pitch modding to give the lead a detuning effect but yeah I could definitely automate it so its not on/as strong for the majority of the song, and just throw it in every so often for variation. I did some surgical EQing on it as well but I'll definitely work on that some more.

Good to know about the strings too--I thought it was a nice progression but I can definitely try to spice it up more, I kinda see what you're saying now

I'll also try to make the drums more complex--this was kinda surprising because it didn't seem too in the box to me (or at least I thought I had done a decent job humanizing the drums)....considering the clap doesnt come until the second drop (its just a wood block before) I figured I could just stick to the 2 and 4 with a hit here and there. I was experimenting with having a more latin-inspired clap pattern (like on the 2 and then two hits syncopated around the 4) so ill continue to work on that.

Made a post but it disappeared...was gonna say theres so little mid/high content (especially early on) that it feels like a DJ just forgot to turn the high/mid EQ back to zero or has the filter sweep down.

like those above examples ^ its possible to have mostly low end content but then have a big fat hat to make up for it (and a kick with some mid/high punch)

So I found a great acapella and made a track, but didnt really like the bass line, and wanted to go for a more jackin/bass house feel. So I removed the bass line so it wouldn't distract/lead anyone's ideas...(the silence before the drops is a space for a bass line lead in, as is common in some future/jackin house)

https://clyp.it/nzgltjse

Impatient people can skip to 3:05 for the complete idea

does anyone have any ideas? Feel free to go at it and we could even collab...I've tried so many different sounds and melodies for the bass and theyre just not clicking. I'm pretty sure the key is D minor because I got the acapella from a song in Ab minor and pitched it down 6 semis....obviously since im only using that one line of the acapella it could easily be notes from another scale as well but its a starting point

also open to feedback on the other parts of the track as is

thanks!

i really dont like tropical house at all, but this melody is good and has trop house written all over it--or like the new avicii sound like country/new progressive house fusion

this is nice. intro is interesting enough and leads into the build well. the verses are constructed well. not a super huge fan of the sample you cut up for the main chords of the song..for some reason it kind sounds like the the synth noise that comes in on the 2 and 4 sounds a little flat out of key...i dunno

very groovy though, you got the vibe down for sure--def a dancey track and it sounds nice. mixed pretty well too

this is pretty cool. the bass is great and carries good weight but i think the kick sample or processing could be a little thumpier/deeper..it kinda sounds like the kick is a little distorted as is. Hi hats could be a little brighter/sharper as well. the little plucks could be mixed a little bit more to the front, i like them

tear it apart please

-wondering how you like the lead (melody and sound design)
-how is the kick/sub relationship?
-wondering if the bass is mixed against the lead well or if its distracting
-wondering how I did on the mixdown (/master attempt)
-thoughts on the lead in to the drop/the drop itself (~4:30)
-should I rework the string/keys chord progression during the breakdown
-is it good? is it done?

thanks a lot, i'll be sure to check your WIP out and give some feedback in exchange

totally agree...love all their singles before this as well, especially With You.

Check out their live performances. it is clear that they're extremely talented, classically trained musicians
