WIPs / Re: My bass is always muddy and sloppy

Using a dedicated sub to play under 100-120 hz will clean up your low end a lot. Eq'ing your leads and chords properly so the mid-bass can sit between the sub and leads/chords is super important too!

I've been wondering about this a lot with my recent productions....is this the general school of thought? I find that it's definitely easier to control low-end dynamics when I have just my simple sine or triangle wave cutoff around 100hz and nothing else but the kick is allowed down there, and then the energy of the "bass" in the track comes from a mid-bass around 100-500hz which has the sub either cut out of it or didnt exist originally.

Is this how most people do their bass or is there some merit to the alternative: having just one bass patch that has a sub oscillator carrying the low end?

Sound Design / Re: Burial Pads
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:58:01 pm »
Not sure specifically for that example, but I've had some success making similar pads using granular synthesis and/or good reverb/delay plugins like QuikQuak Fusion Field (really lush reverb) or SoundToys EchoBoy (a lot of Echoboy presets have a lot of modulation which helps create nice movement). Sometimes I find it's best to use mostly the wet signal and very little dry, and then resample so you have more control over it.

I can't remember where but I think I read that Burial mostly samples for his pads (and everything in his tracks, really)--so I wouldn't count on getting the sound out of any of the usual VST synths very easily....but Omnisphere is also amazing for pads like this.

There's definitely some very good layering involved too on his part--he sampled the vocals from a video game soundtrack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUimcNyLU6Q

On the point about the granular synthesis though, you can take the smallest snippet of sound and run it through one and have an awesome randomly modulating pad without any reverb needed (which means you have a lot more control over the envelope of the sound). I use the monolake granulator for max for live. the demo video shows what I'm talking about pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pn_b7OUO6I

nothing too fancy here but I definitely picked up some useful stuff on Lane 8's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_eGfgCzQis

Also nice to see how producers keep things so simple sometimes...

Sound Design / Deep, Groany, Horn Bass like Jonas Rathsman/Anjunadeep
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:07:25 pm »
Hey Everyone,

This is something I've been working on for weeks now and I just can't seem to get my basses tight enough to really scrape the deepest depths of my soul like Jonas Rathsman and a few Anjunadeep artists have been doing lately.

It's that bass-but-almost-a-horn sound that they've been using a lot in recent tracks, examples below.

Examples:
1. Wolfsbane @ 1:03 - https://youtu.be/u5VYDvZT3c8?t=59s
2. New Generation @ 1:01 - https://youtu.be/WWcn1srWJfM?t=1m
3. Know Me - Meramek @ 0:31 - https://youtu.be/BfxO1-Rhgpc?t=28s

Here are my takes on it so far in Ableton using Trillian (Taurus pedals) and Diva (just messing around with automating LFOs)...my attempts include a lot of selective and sharp EQing, Overdrive, some compression and a little saturation...but they just aren't there yet.

Also let me know if maybe its just my drums that suck and that's holding it back...

Any help is appreciated, thanks!
