Yikes I never realized how bad it is. Actually quite like the song myself.

That track actually has some pretty clever use of white noise if you listen closely

Mixing/Mastering / Idea for mixing practice?
« on: March 24, 2016, 03:57:38 am »
I just came up with this idea at work today randomly.

Someone posts full stems to a track, and its your job to mix it to sound good.

We can all comment on how they sound, and who's needs work/aspects of the mix that you like/dont like, making us all better.

Anyone up for it?

I sidechain my sub a lot heavier than I do other layers, and some leads I don't sidechain much at all.

A7X's are amazing

If you use ableton, I throw a utility on every single channel I use now. makes everything so much easier in the long run

^ Yeah in that case, its pretty useless to me isn't it? I have the Arturia collection for that

I've always wanted something analogue to layer some cool sounding leads and bass with, and theres one of these local selling for fairly cheap. Think it would be worth picking it up?

Fair enough, I guess if you picture an orchestra's string section, you can't sustain a note for a long time without any change of pitch or volume.

Maybe adding a tiny bit of LFO vibrato might help, along with subtle volume changes?

I usually find a sample a few semitones off, or exactly in the key I want. Also, going a 5th above the root note is okay too, especially if you're using a powerful bass.

I usually drag my sample into a drum rack in ableton, then throw a spectrum on it, and see where the lowest peaking frequency is, for example a kick in E will be around 41hz. If you cant quite get it off of that, then transpose the kick sample up an octave, and its usually easier to tell.

If that doesn't work, or its still unclear, throw an EQ on, cut away all the higher frequencies, and play a sine wave alongside the kick.

Sound Design / Re: What's your opinion on Presets ?
« on: March 06, 2016, 11:33:18 pm »
I use presets all the time, simply due to the fact that they make my workflow 10x better. When I have an idea in my head, I wanna get it down quick as possible, and sometimes going through presets can help find a sound in my head that I can't quite get down.

I do however, almost always tweak them in someway or another to fit whatever I'm doing. But when you're trying to get a rough idea of a track down, sometimes going through like 10 lead presets to find something quickly can seriously help moving on to the next thing in a project, rather than spending an hour trying to make the exact sound you want.

I do however think its kinda cheesy when you listen to a track and you recognize a preset right away. And I respect people who make their own sounds themselves from scratch.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Equalization Of Lead Layers
« on: March 06, 2016, 11:23:04 pm »
A mistake I used to make, was that when layering leads, I would go pick a low sound, a mid sound, and a high one, but I would cut them way too harshly, so instead of having a little bit of frequency overlap, I would end up with a lead sound that sounded like 3 different elements, rather than 1 lead. Having them overlap a little, and then adding compression after is what I found really helped me make a good lead.

I also find that finding one main sound for a lead is really important, make that one sound stand out, and then add whats missing onto it after. For example, adding some high end white noise on a separate layer, maybe another synth layered an octave below to make it thicker. But finding/creating a sound thats good to begin with really makes things a lot easier, then enhancing it with layers afterwards.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Layering a snare over a kick. Mix help

You guys reckon changing the attack time on a snare might help to make it less clicky?

I stack different sounding supersaws? Usually one layer is white noise and one layer is square
