Mixing/Mastering / Re: Steps to achieve loudness
« on: May 12, 2016, 10:44:57 pm »
Whats up with all this overcomplicating things? For my tracks I just make sure all the levels are mixed properly. If some instruments, samples or synths have peaks I see if they're too large. If they are, I apply compression or some bitcrush to tame the peaks, but other than that, achieving loudness is just getting your levels right. If you have that right you can turn up the limiter get professional loudness.

I also took a look at at this and found some interesting stuff.

What I found interesting was their sidechaining... At this point in the bass music loudness war, I was under the impression basically everyone is using some form of volume automation sidechain that knocks the volume of more or less the entire mix to zero (Mids+Sub at least)

In this track, only the subbass was getting dropped to zero, in fact, the heavy midrange synths were only being knocked down ~50%, the keys/leads a bit more, and just slightly on the percussion and background stuff. Maybe this was done just because of the bass house signature groove?

It just seems like, how are you going to achieve such a loud mix when you've got the loudest thing in your mix, the kick, hitting right on top of another element that is right up there in gain, the mids, and not have the mids ducked all the way down.

Either way, saved all those LFOtool settings for when I wanna try my hand at a bass house tune ;)

And even today, watching the Funtcase in the studio, he talks about how he doesn't sidechain very heavily since it sounds unnatural (which, is sort of rich considering how unnatural the sort of music is to begin with).
The mids don't take up nearly as much headroom as the sub and kick so you don't have to sidechain them 100% in order to get a loud mix m8 :)

Very well-produced stuff, I get a Zedd vibe. Might just grab this to reference my tracks against!
Thanks! i feel honoured you think its good enough to reference against <3

It depends on how much older you are. If you start with producing at like 10, i can imagine it'd be difficult to properly grasp concepts like compression, EQ'ing and distortion. I myself started when I was 18 and the fact that I was in Uni made it super easy for me to grasp all these concepts. However, I think that if I was lets say 28 when I started, it would've been more difficult for me to work on my creativity. The human brain is more difficult to mold after like 25 years of age, so learning anything will be more of a challenge.

Looks like I got 7 more years to build up those mixing/arranging skills before it's too late and I'm doomed to a life of broken dreams.  ;D
Ahah. Put in enough effort and everything is possible. My songs from last year were pretty shit.1 year made a big difference

I'm 21 lol. Started when I was 18. Would've been best to start when I was 16 but I guess 18's not to bad haha. But yeah, dance music is obviously made for (not always anymore lol) for dancing, which means that its largest audience will be the people that go to festivals, clubs and parties. Those people are mostly teenagers and young adults so its not strange most producer start in their teens.

Sounds great! Reminds me of Centre of the Universe (Blinders Remix) a little.
thanks man :) glad you like it haha.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Question About Headroom
« on: May 09, 2016, 07:46:45 am »
Makes sense. I can see how a signal recorded past -0.0db would be impossible to bring down if it were recorded like a vocal or a guitar.

Can't fix a clipped signal. I just wanted some clarification on the issues. I wasn't aware that some daws don't offer the option to bring all the faders down at once.

Guess I gotta love logic even more for that. <3
You can also just put a gain plugin on the output and turn it down. Easier than turning down all the faders

I dont mix into a mastering chain, but hey, jts all about the end result. If it sounds good, its good.

do you have any examples? Chance is big that you haven't layered the saws properly

But for people like me, only working with in the digital domain, the creation of headroom is just a fader move away.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: connect two chord progressions
« on: May 07, 2016, 06:37:16 pm »
K :-)  thanks for ur reply. Ive Been doing the analysing thing for quite a while now. I just thought that maybe there is an easy "concept" or logic to narrow it down. Its quite a complicated thing, like an equation with many variables.u can solve It but It takes time :-)
U c there is so much to know about Chords but in the end i feel like analysing has limits and in the end u just have to Rock the goddamn keyboard. True?
You don't have to know any instruments for that tbh. Just practice a lot :) Also, if you want to connect 2 chord progressions its all about how you want it to sound and then also how you transition from one into another. It should be at a point where it sounds natural and ofcourse proper automation of filters can help make the transition sound more natural.

Yeah don't worry I'm very aware of that, it will take a long time and a lot of hard work. What do you think is the best way to find and talk to more experienced producers or anyone that is interested in production as well? Other than this forum of course
Send demo's tweets or message producers you look up too. Ask them for feedback, talk to them about music etc.
