Some Madeon sounds:
-  Zephyr  https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/zephyr
- Home Arp https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/home
- The City lead https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/the-city-lead-remake-attempt There should be a pitch down at the end but I failed at it so whatever
- Imperium Bass, kinda? https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/imperium-bass-remake-attempt

If you could shed some light on how you made the imperium bass and second sound that would be awsome.
Sure! Sorry for late response!
Okay, Imperium Bass: Made in serum, first osc simple 1 voice saw, second osc 16 unison -1 oct saw really minimal detune like 0.01. Saw sub osc -1 oct and noise osc. All through lowpass filter . Cutoff modulated by quick decaying envelope. Some effects like tube distortion with pre eq hi pass with nice resonance. Okay then fx chain. Camel Phat distortion, ohmicide 4-band distortion using various types of distortion for each band, you could experiment with that, OTT and Fabfilter Saturn for taste. Saturn is a tweaked basic saturator preset, it`s nice.
Okay then, Home Arp! Saw osc 8 voice 2.40 detune, square osc 8 voice 3.90 pretty high detune, retrig off of course. Lowpass filter modulated by a decaying envelope, phaser, chorus, eq to taste. Okay, then fx chain, because right now it doesn`t sound similar at all. Eq getting rid of weird resonances, then the most important - Guitar Rig! Solid Eq, just eq it till it sounds good, Gratifier clean preset, jazz amp vibrato preset, they might be tweaked but were starting points, some compressors and the fx that makes this sound - Little Reflektor preset Big and Tight  100% wet 50% dry. Okay, then this guitar rig is set to be 75% wet overall. Another eq, then ohmicide to taste.
Here you go :)
Cheers!

I start with drums at -9 dB. My goal is to have -6 dB on the master in the end. When I`m on headphones and can`t raise the volume anymore I put a limiter on master and make it gain like +3 dB so it`s never hitting 0 dB anyway.

Yes it is. I just don`t like this notation and prefer G# to Ab, because in FL Studio in piano roll they are notated this way. And it`s overall easier. There are sharps and non-sharps haha

If you`re just starting out any stock compressor and eq will do. For example, FL Studio has a really great EQ that visualizes everything in a nice way. And you know, Fruity Limiter is also a compressor!
If you`re into french drums then DSP Nightshine is a must and it`s free! For synths I love XFer OTT, you won`t really learn compression on it but it makes everything sound lush!
When you`ll want to try the best, paid options, Fabfilter Pro-Q 2 is the best equalizer imo, Fabfilter Pro-MB for multiband compression and C2 for single band compression.
Also, Oxford Dynamics. And Maximus is a great tool!
If you want to colorize your sounds using 'classic compressors', those by NI and Softube are great: VC76, VC2A and VC160
Cheers :)

Valhalla, RC24/RC48, Oxford Reverb and Lexicon are the ones I tried, they are all really good, I liked Lexicon the best but it`s sooo expensive!
Valhalla is cheap and awesome :)

Mixing/Mastering / Stereo Separation
« on: January 13, 2016, 10:58:57 pm »
Hey!
I`m curious about your methods of controlling stereo image of your sounds.
What I often do is use Maximus. It`s a multiband compressor and each band has its own stereo separation knob.
I set low to mono, widen mid a bit and highs a lot.
Cheers!

Have you guys got any idea about how to approach this sound?

Squares, right?
Glide or pitch automation?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Spicy, interesting chords
« on: January 13, 2016, 07:35:33 pm »
Hey!
The question might sound silly but I`ve been wondering if you incorporate any cool chords into your chord progressions. You know, chords outside your scale.
It would be cool if you used roman numbers notation like V7 or tell me what the chord is in a minor, because I always write in piano roll in a minor and change the key digitally but anything will do.
When it comes to me, I love to use V9, so in a minor it`s an extended E Major chord instead of the usual e minor. Notes are EG#BDG. It resolves really nicely into a minor, the root.
Another one would be II, so D Major when I`m in a minor. Well, it`s always nice to try to use the major version of the chord, it sounds uplifting. To give you an example, it`s the last chord in the chord progression in Deadmau5 - Ghosts n Stuff. You can replace d minor or a minor with it, no one expects D Major inquisition!
Also I`m going to experiment more with bVI and bVII in major scale. In C Major it`s G# Major and A# Major, I believe. When resolved to C Major it`s a nice movie-like happy ending. Technicolor by Madeon ends this way.
When it comes to chords within the scale I love to use sevenths. My favourite chord ever is VI7. In a minor it`s F Major 7 I believe. I might be wrong because it could be like a dominant or major seventh I`m not really good with the theory about them but yeah. It feels nostalgic to me. Also v7, V7, I7, iv7 and vi7. Sometimes I might extend to a ninth.
So, how about you? I`d love to know :)
Cheers!

Sound Design / Remaking Madeon
« on: January 13, 2016, 07:00:49 pm »
Hey! What`s up?
Have you ever tried remaking the one and only Madeon? Because I have and it`s always such a pain, like sure, I can remake most of edm sounds but him?! And it really annoys me because he uses the same synths and stuff so it`s definitely possible! So, I ask you to share your attempts, here are some of mine:
- Some Zephyr sounds https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/zephyr
- Home Arp https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/home
- The City lead https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/the-city-lead-remake-attempt There should be a pitch down at the end but I failed at it so whatever
- Imperium Bass, kinda? It was hard for me. https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/imperium-bass-remake-attempt
I can`t to hear what you did :)
Cheers

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Best (your favorite) Kick samples?
« on: January 13, 2016, 06:46:41 pm »
Madeon kick is my favourite (Snares too!). I love how it`s fast decaying and hard hitting. I usually get it done by combining a few kicks with these characteristics. And a brushy hi-hat on top is a must! I love linndrum and mixing in a bit of an acoustic kick.

Vocodex! You can do many things with it!
Also mda Talkbox if you want to keep it simple  :)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: What is your favorite sample pack
« on: January 06, 2016, 09:05:14 am »
Well, I won`t be original but if I had to limit myself to only one sample pack it would be Loopmasters - Deadmau5 XFER, it has lots and lots of usable stuff.
I have lots of sample packs, when making kicks and snares I usually mix samples from various packs, I love disco themed ones like Sample Magic Nu Disco. Also lots of classic drum machine samples and a lot of free random stuff from the internet.
My sample folder is like 60 GB, damn! I choose my favourite samples from a sample pack from time to time and put them categorized into a folder called Favourites.
Cheers!

I guess Sylenth1 is the one I use the most, mainly for chords, because it sounds great and is easy on cpu. Harmor is also great.
FM8 an Sytrus for fm stuff - dirty basses.
Diva for experimenting with cool basses, it eats cpu so I use it monophonically.
Serum > Massive for wavetable synthesis, but actually I don`t use them that often because I don`t incorporate growls and stuff into my music.
I started getting into Spire recently to complement Sylenth1 chords, it sounds really lush but it`s hard on cpu so I have to limit unison voices in it.
Absynth for some magical pads.
Outside synthesis I love mda ePiano and Lounge Lizard EP-4 for rhodes and Chromaphone for cool sounds/attacks of mallets, bells etc.
Cheers!
