WIPs / Re: My "Boring" Track: Goodbye - WIP
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:04:49 pm »
I'm not even trying to flame or anything, but could you give some example of a track in a similar style that is less "boring"? I usually listen to more energetic stuff so it would be nice to have some frame of reference and learn more about this genre.

I like the sounds, and the melody is kinda nice. In the drop at 1:30, I was thinking that maybe it would be more interesting without so much delay in the "buzz" bass? How would it sound if you muted the delay at points for rhythmic effect (like immediately after the upwards octave jump in the bassline)?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not quite clear on what your mean by muting the delay right after the high note in the bass line. I have a delay on the pluck sound. Is that what you mean?  Actually that pluck sound is one of the things that really bugs me in this track. Also, the bass line in the "hands in the air" part after the break is not as impactful as I like. I don't have a delay on the buzz bass.

A song less boring.
Produced in this style :

I think this song has amazing songwriting. I think that's what my track is lacking.

You have some good musical elements in this track, but I'm just not feeling the groove.  The genre is trance, but maybe it's more toward a harder style of trance.  I'm not an expert on that. If not, I would like to see you work more on the melody to try and give it more flow and groove. Maybe change the timing of the notes in the melody a little to give it more push.  You can do it and still keep the original melodic theme.  Just my opinion.

WIPs / My "Boring" Track: Goodbye - WIP
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:33:53 pm »
I have been working on this track for longer than I want to admit.  I keep working on it because I already have so much time invested.  I watched the Ill.Gates video the other night and it made me realize that I maybe should have quit working on this track weeks ago.  I'm just not feeling it. You know what I mean?  I just think it lacks impact. If anybody would listen to it and tell me what you think, I would appreciate it.  Tell me to move on if thats what you think...lol. I feel like saying "Goodbye" to this track.

Thanks,
Rob

Sound Design / Re: How do you learn all those terminologies?
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:08:04 pm »
Pretty much what everyone said. Also, when you purchase a new product, Read The F*cking Manual. It's been said over and over again. Don't skip on it. You'll learn all there is about the synth/plug.

Plus, time. Over time, these terms will become part of your lexicon. Don't sweat it.

I bought the Albino synth years ago and I printed out the manual.  I didn't have a clue about oscillators, filters, envelopes or modulation.  It wasn't much help.  I was totally lost.  I think you need a basic sound design tutorial.  Pyramind has an online class that is taught by 7 Skies.  It's not cheap, but you get to learn from an Anjunabeats signed artist. It's very good. I learned a lot. I would recommend something like that. There is also a book called "The Dance Music Manual" By Rick Snoman.  If you're serious about producing, I would recommend it.

Sound Design / Re: Virus Ti Wavetables for Serum

Anyone have any idea on the legality of these (for use in productions)?

Not sure about the legalities of deriving wavetables from hardware synths, but I know it's pretty common.  I downloaded a Serum wavetable pack by 7Skies.  Theres some hardware wavetables in that folder too.

I'm not sure how close this is to what you're trying for, but this short tutorial has some basic techniques that might work in many styles.
Good Luck

Thanks for the great feedback Rob. I couldn't agree more about the groove, just trying to get it right. will take lots of experimenting. Will give it another go over the weekend

Exactly, Just play around with it, and you'll find a cool groove. That's the hardest part sometimes, but it's definitely worth it in the end.

WIPs / Re: We Need Biscuits - kind of a nu-funk vibe
« on: January 08, 2016, 06:12:14 am »
Not sure what the style is here but as far as what stands out?  I hear a high pitched synth swirling effect.  I think its a little too loud or may need some of the highs rolled off of it. Also, I think if you bring out more of the body of the snare, it would fill out the track a little more.

I think you have a good song idea here.  I listened to it a couple of times.  The mix is good. The one think that I would like to hear in this track (or feel) is a little more groove. When I listened to this track it reminded me a little of the track "Hello" by Above & Beyond. I would like to see you play around with the timing of the notes in the baseline. Right now the track seems to be choppy and a little lacking in flow and groove.  It's hard to explain, but to me, it needs something to pull the listener forward. Maybe try and shift some of the bass notes forward in time by a 16th or so note to create more flow. You can hear that in "Hello". Some of the baseline notes kind of "lead into" others by playing slightly early.  That track has great groove and flow.  Also, in Hello, at 1:30, more rhythmical elements are added to pick up the pace and build excitement and impact.  Dance music is about building up emotional ebb and flow.  I would also like to hear the vocal chops get a little more busy . Again, to create more excitement and anticipation. (I like to imagine people in a club dancing when I produce a track). But over-all, you have a solid idea and "work in progress" here.

Hope this helps a little,
Cheers,
Rob

Sound Design / Re: Replicate this trance lead?
« on: January 08, 2016, 04:17:57 am »
If the sound you're talking about is that supersaw lead?  I am pretty sure that it is done with Dune. I don't own it but I know of another track that has that sound. "Rubicon" by 7 Skies and Super8 and Tab. (Extended mix) 7 Skies told me (and my fellow Pyramind classmates) that it was done with Dune. The main lead part after the breakdown. Dune has the ability to create thousands of unison voices. It's very specific to that one synth. It's on sale until Jan 10th too.
Hope that helps

Sound Design / Re: Virus Ti Wavetables for Serum

I saw this posted up a few months back so thought I'd share.

Full pack of all 99 recorded wave tables from the Virus Ti2

http://www.mediafire.com/download/go9294o01tu7p41/AC+Virus+TI2+Wavetables.zip

Make a folder in your Serum "Tables" folder, Call it Virus Ti or something and copy these in.

Hypersaws galore!

I downloaded the the wavetables and I designed a Lead sound.  It's just some chords that I came up with in context.  It's very rough.  I'm not the most experienced sound designer, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the link Luke.

Cheers,
Rob

Thanks, I will definitely check it out. Maybe I will post a patch result using these wavetables for the forum to critique.

Sound Design / Re: What's your opinion on Presets ?
« on: January 07, 2016, 08:49:22 pm »
I think that using presets is fine. It is important though to have some knowledge of synthesis and sound design. It's important to know hoe to modify and shape the attack  decay, sustain and release envelope of sounds. Also, playing around with detune and filter envelope can help with getting the sound to fit the mix. I usually turn off all of the effects that are included in a preset, and use my own. One thing about presets is that it takes time flipping through them. I like to design my own sounds because sometimes it's faster. If you're looking for a marquee sound to be a signature piece of a track,  flipping through presets may take a long, long time. This is where learning sound design would really help.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Most popular/used plugin of all?

I think you're missing one plugin that may also take first place.  Xfer Records LFO tool.

Haha Rob, sounds like you've cleaned your studio and the Mrs is happy ;-) Cool!

I've had the Ti2 for a while and it's one thing I'll never sell.

Hi Danyella!

No, I haven't cleaned my studio yet....LOL. I am really still just wondering about getting a Virus Snow, even though my wife would buy it for me. Glad to see you here :)
