Finished Tracks / bloodbit - VHS (original)
« on: November 10, 2016, 12:37:11 am »
I used to be pretty active on this community and took a brief hiatus, I'm back though and would love to see what you guys think of this track:

I've spent a lot of time getting better at mastering and mixing and decided to hit a reboot on my sc and upload much more professional tracks from here on out. Any criticisms are welcome!

Hmm when I listen to it I really think the mix could be done a bit better, for me it seems like the bass and the synth are the main elements but they are not coming through as much as they should in relation to the other elements (like the vocals in the background) it all kind of sounds like the same volume to me. What do you use on your master chain? it could be either the mix or the master depending on what you use to process

For mixing advice I think this track would do well with more variation in dynamic range. Listening and observing the waveform alone it seems like you might have gone with too much compression, there is very little volume differentiation between the introduction and the middle, it just looks like one fat sausage! ease up on the compression this isn't dance music so it doesn't need to be fat throughout. start with a lower volume in the beginning and having a crescendo could do more for this track.

;D Hey there fellow lurker and welcome!
I would recommend going further in processing your kicks and claps, for me they lacked depth and detracted from the overall feel of the track. Instances where the track sounded spacious the clap would come in with such a short decay that it felt conflicting and contradictory to the situation. Having that extra bit of detail can make the track sound more lively and cohesive; good first track though, don't ever be afraid to experiment!

I know this is an ambient/house track, but to me there was not enough variation or complexity to keep me engaged. I like the beginning and the transition into the drop but halfway through the drop it just feels too repetitive, which is probably something that comes down to taste.
Try layering and throwing in weird but cohesive sounds that dont derail the listener but keep them wanting more. :) good job though I think this was done creatively just needed more development.

I definitely cant hear it but the thing is with 30+ channels all contributing wouldn't all those bleeding frequencies contribute to muddying up the mix?

Sound Design / completely cutting out certain frequencies
« on: May 11, 2016, 07:12:07 pm »
Hi guys, noob here.
For the longest time I thought by eqing I was cutting out unwanted frequencies completely.
I realized today that was not the case and was wondering if I could be either configuring the equalizer wrong or if I need to use a specific plugin to do this. I think I want something with a really steep slope, removing unwanted frequencies completely if that is even possible. I first looked into engineer's filter but they only have 32 bit versions, which don't work on my 64bit version of ableton. I've messed around with filters but the unwanted frequencies still bleed through.
Picture is attached to show you an example, the spectrum analyzer after the EQ shows the higher frequencies still coming through after cutting them out.
Thanks guys!

Boy that title is a mouthful. Like the description on the track says, this will be my first completed track with vocals from https://soundcloud.com/emberisland.
I appreciate any feedback you have for me! Happy Tuesday!

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: How to progress?
« on: March 22, 2016, 09:16:02 pm »
Your music isn't bad, I've definitely heard worse, but honestly it isn't amazing. I know its hard to not be discouraged when you feel like you've become stagnant but try to turn it into positive energy, never let the amount of followers define you as a producer but the music itself. Maybe try to identify why you are making music in the first place. If it truly is for the love of the music you will find the drive within you somewhere, just keep on creating and trying new things and one day you might be pleasantly surprised to find that an artist you highly respect reaches out to you and tells you he digs what you make.

I agree with FarleyCZ, what you should work on is creating more depth within your tracks, for example the snare in your track "Pure" seems really basic, even adding a touch of reverb and cutting out clashing frequencies, changing velocitys throughout the progression can make it sound more organic and lively.

Remember we all had to start somewhere, there was a point where even the most iconic musicians had 45 followers instead of hundreds of thousands.  I think I read somewhere it took deadmau5 ~15 years (dont quote me on that) to break into the scene so 10 months is really no time at all when it comes to production.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Is it done yet?

How do you guys know when your tracks are finished? Is it simply an "a ha" moment or do you guys settle with "this is good enough, next track".
For me one of the biggest problem I think is knowing when to stop and questioning my judgement in deciding if it is appropriate to leave the track as is. Sure its done when it sounds good to you as the creator but I never have gotten to a point where I was 100% satisfied with what I was creating. It has never felt "done", so is this simply a matter of my production has not caught up to my standards and that for the time being I should just keep writing tracks until one day production level meets my standards? If so how do you get over coping with the fact that you are uploading (if you upload them at all) mediocre tracks? The fact that I know its subpar production and that I am just adding to the junk online bothers me. This leads me to two solutions, either don't care and upload them because they would just sit on my harddrive space anyways and hope someone enjoys them or simply hoard all my tracks until one day they both production and standards levels are equal?

I know there is no right answer I just want to know your thought process, what bothers you and if you feel the same way.
Many questions that will hopefully provoke some insightful discussion, feel free to jump in anywhere!

WIPs / Re: Future Bass

My 2cents:
pro: intro and breakdown were immaculate, loved it! instrumentals and vocals compliment each other really well.
con: I think having the bass in so strong during the buildup really took away from the drop, I would advise as the buildup rises cut back on the low frequencies a bit so that once that drop comes its nice and fat making the most impact on the listener.
:) definitely checking out more of your stuff, keep it up!

My top two favorites: Igorrr and ruby my dear
They made an album together that you can check out with that link. I always get weird looks in traffic blasting their album from my car ;)

As much as I love being a Nazi on this forum (it wont help people get better if I just sugar coat shit am I right?) this track was really difficult to find something wrong with. This is mostly personal preference and is pretty hard to catch but at 2:15 theres a drum buildup that is brought in, dynamically i think if the build up was a decrescendo (without having the drum buildup and just the synth fading) and then the kick, "meow" (or whatever that cute sound was) right before the drop exploding it would have a more dramatic effect instead of a crescendo and then drop. Really has to do with personal preference so take it with a grain of salt. I really really liked this track a lot and love the cute aesthetic you got going on!
