Try Eq to cut some lows. Throw a phaser and/or chorus. Slight delay like one that doesn't have a lot of feedback. Or reverb again very short and mess a little with the pre-delay. THEN!!!! Compress that to color it up and make it a bit more interesting. After all that add another reverb to make it super big.

Clipping? Oh Distortion. I mean that is what distortion is. Saturation, and pumping a compressor usually gives me a good thickening. Hell! Even having the master clip and exporting as MP3 does Limiting for you. Not saying it works in every case or should be used all the time. Thats how some mashup are made and almost sound sonically identical to the tracks used in it. Like any limiter, saturator or distortion can be overloaded. Same with exporting to mp3.

Hey all good haha I didn't realize ALS meant for that I thought you were signing me up for that ALS ice bucket challenge. Nice! I bet that set up is fun. Well I do know fl studios has a voice generator that does exactly what you want. Or you type whatever needed to be said and have your mac or computer "Speak" the text you wrote while internally recording?

those beyerdynamics have been my go to for a couple years. With any headphones be sure to understand how they work. Meaning understanding the response of the frequencies. Not all speakers react the same, same as headphones.

Like a sound that is a voice used as a synth? Use your phone to record you saying vowels. Then import that audio, most daws has a function where you can import that small vocal sample as a "wave table' So boom you have a voice synth. Does that help?

most used plugin of all time? I would have to say my go to is the plug in for the computer. Other than that I would say a spectrum analyzer, I always use one to know where instruments lay.

I've been struggling lately with pitching vocals.  I tried to do a remake of Flux Pavilion's beat the clock (http://www.factmag.com/2016/01/06/flux-pavilion-against-the-clock/) but when I record my own vocals and pitch them up they sound horrible in comparison.  Perhaps it's because I'm using ableton's pitching algorithm?  What are other peoples vocal pitching techniques?  Usually I just pitch up and complex/pro and pray it sounds good
Try processing your vocal without the pitch bend. Process with, phaser distortion, eq, delay whatever you think sounds good. Then Pitch bend it. I had pretty good results with a youtube video where I downloaded the audio. Processed the vocals then pitched them down.

I will use phaser, chorus, delay, reverb and distortion. Not in that order and not always all of those plugins. Eq out the bottom. Phaser or chorus on higher freq to add the sparkle. I will say this I usually have my distortion last in the chain of process. example: Eq, phaser, Delay ---Then A small amount of distortion as like a glue. Just enough to make the rest of the plugins punch. Side note!! thats just to make it more present. If done correctly the vocals will sit nicely and small amounts of eq and or compression/side chain after will really gel in into the mix.

If you do use a kick make sure to use the ADSR envelope to make it where only the transient is passing through the signal. Also I have used clap, snares, vocals and synths as a side chain signal.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing the bass with the sub
« on: January 07, 2016, 05:25:34 pm »
Try adding distortion to the sub. Just enough to make it more powerful. A/B for comparison. Make sure when you are checking that when you turn the distortion on and off the signal is at the same level. Anything louder WILL appear to sound better. With the higher bass, distort that also or something to make it stand out. the connection between the higher freq's and low's will help make your bass more present. Hope that helps

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Stereo Width
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:00:55 pm »
I found layering helps maybe it can help with you. Layer those leads, those claps, those snares, hi hates. Layer what i mean is get a left side a right side and a middle. Like make two or three instances of so "stereo track' do some panning. Buss them and then process. This literally gives you an actual stereo image that you fully control. In the buss be subtle with Eq, chorus, delay and distortion. Im pretty sure most Daws come with some sort of stereo widening. No need to run and buy a lexicon......yet. Also you can make an "Izotope ozone stereo Imager". Its just a mulitband imager, just splits the frequencies. Eq does the same thing.

Even with the bass the low frequencies can be cut off, pan one to the left one to the right. THEN put a mono sub bass for support. You have a complete thick baseline that is mono and stereo.

Hey but this is opposite day so remember to do the opposite of that.
