Sound Design / Re: The Kick Designing Thread: Click, Punch, Thump!
« on: January 06, 2016, 05:36:30 am »
How exactly would you run into phase issues when building your layered kick? Or how do you avoid it? Or know you have phase issues?

I just use my ears, and it involves a lot of playing around with the pitch envelope curve, reversing it's polarity back and forth and adjusting the delay slightly until it sounds right. It just takes some practice

If I recall I think I just used sylenth. The whole movement of the sound comes from the modwheel vibrato and a simple envelope on the filter. Its an old track so i probably processed it very crudely with OTT and reverb. If I was at home I'd look at the project file, but I'm pretty sure thats how I did it

I pretty much use the same layering technique, and I use metrum a lot for the low end/mids/tail because you can add a slight delay within the plugin which is very useful for aligning everything and sorting out phase issues

For me, the one thing that remains a constant when layering snares is I don't have more than one element providing the transient, and when I layer other sounds on top I make sure they don't clash with the transient by using fades, small delays and whatnot

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Let's talk clipping

Clipping is absolutely a great way to fatten up individual channels, what you should never do is clip the master. Other than that clipping is a great tool

Interesting initial idea, but it could use more variation to keep it interesting as the track progresses imo

Don't get disheartened, it takes me a long time before I get anywhere near a good mixdown and even then I'll be super hard on myself

The only thing I'd say is the kick feels a bit hollow, could help layering a bit with a synth kick maybe

To add some variation to a looped sample, try creating loads of channels with different effects and processing, and drop the sample into different channels at different times

Yeh it could definitely do with more bass, in my headphones it's pretty much non existent

Did you leave the sub/bass out one purpose?

This is cool, that reverb thing is different to how I did it though but I like your method.

I sidechained the reverb to the synth so everytime the synth cuts out the reverb comes in, but again I like the way you did it
