Cool idea! ...I'd still like to keep the overall signatue though. But breaking it for a brief moments could be cool. Or switching to triplets here or there. Thanks! :)

HA! That's exactly what I thought ... so as not a big of a Trap head, I went to listen to that few Trap tracks I like and tapped their tempo. All around 140 - 150. Which is ok as you end up somewhere around 75 when deviding. Still kinda working "hip-hop speed". But once you go sub-130, devision gets you around 60 bpm. That's waaaay to sloooow. I tried to fix it by pacing of other elements, but that's exactly what gives me that oldschool-ish breakbeat feel.

Lately I've been digging out some old projects. I've grew up listening to 135-ish trance, so a lot od them are somewhere from 120 to 138-ish BPMs. I like melodies in some of them so I wouldn't like to throw these ideas away. ...but I've been messing with few of them yesterday and I can't shake of the feeling, that no matter what I do, there are only two options how that can end. Either I use 4x4 and end up with yet another trance/proghouse-ish track or I break the rythm, ending up with almost formulatic breakbeat track.

Do you guys have some examples of styles that live around 130 that sound ... eh ... fresh? :) ...solely for inspirational reasons. No shame in that.  :P

Lately I've been doing it this way:
- Load frequency analyser of your choice, possibly one with "note" readout.
- Crank up the FFT window to something like 65 536. It'll get slow, but it will give you precise frequency readout.
- Look at the peak your kick/snare/tom/whatever "ends". That's the fundamental that would clash with the rest of the notes.
- Tune it to nearest in-key note.

Done. :)

Hi all,

this came up in Slack channel, but I think it might deserve a separate forum thread.

As we know, you can build really complex melodies out of huge variety of intervals not paying attention if they're are actually "nice" or not. As far as you like it, it's awesome. You can build chord progressions out of exotic chords with strange structures just to escape classic triads. You can build syncopated rythms so the whole thing feels jazzy and stuff...

But what if you are on the other side of the spectrum? What if you like the audience to connect with your song a lot. That means making pretty chords and melodies most of the time. Familiar chords, pleasant intervals, "nod your head" rythms. I've been happy with that most of the time, but lately it feels like there's a line somewhere. Line where "pretty" becomes "cheesy", too predictable, too simple.

How do you find that line? Do you try to avoid it? If so, how?

It makes me appreciate people like Ed Sheeran much more ... who actually do write their stuff while being successful.

Oh, aren't we all...  8)

...no, seriously I could use some advice about where to find a cool vocalist with good english, decent mic, fine singing and will to collaborate too.

Don't underestimate this, man. It's big.

I've been in this completely alone for several years, which ended up by doubting eeeverythiiiing I did. So one day, while having a deep depression about not seeing any progress, I thought: Ok, I'll find someone (relatively) local who I believe has better chance of succeeding. May be I can help a bit or something...

So I found a guy like that. On Facebook. Still remember that first stupidly awkward conversation. "Hi man. I suck. You don't. Let's be friends!" ...lol. We've found out we have quite similar tastes and when it's possible, we comment each others tracks, WIPs and so on. Night and day difference. If you're making a piece of shit and don't know it, friend like this will tell you. If you're making something good while doubting it, he'd tell you again. ...and vice versa. You can help back if he needs fresh ears too.

So yeah. Find friends like this. As much as you can. It helps a ton.

...also if you live in bigger city, there's a chance there is a community of producers somewhere. Find it. Asap. I've found one and it's so awesome when we meet.

Finished Tracks / FarleyCZ - Anyway [liquid dnb]

Hi all,

so I've made this little liquid with a twist in the middle. Hope you like it. Every suggestion what to do better next time is welcome! :)

I would be slightly worried about thermal throttling. It's nice that they can put i7 in these, but as they are slim, they have either really little fans, or just passive cooling. That might end up by CPU trying to save itself from overheating by limiting it's power. I'd go to a shop and try some CPU burn test on the machine beforehand. Also as Marrow said. Make sure you buy a lot of RAM. Especially if you intend to use some big sampler patches/libraries.

Also, I too went for gaming laptop. They are cheaper in build, but good bang for a buck as far as power goes. ...and they can usually cool themselves relatively good.
