Snow's advice is a good one.

I deal with this really a lot. Especially when having sort of demanding job, this happens every other day. Not feeling to even listen to music. ...so I can't give a real advice as I haven't found one yet but ... there was this movie I postponed watching for a long time. I used is as a "devider" between job and also kinda demanding hobby. Just to empty that brain a bit before filling it with music. ...and it work great yesterday. ...so try this too and we'll see. :D

When I was 2 years in, I didn't even know which DAW to choose. ...and songs that came out of that were damn bad. I found cool at that point to go and learn a bit of theory. Not much, just a bit. It clearify what is pleasant and what isn't, which helps you a bit at points where you loose all the judgement over a loop.

Collaborator isn't a bad idea. If I hadn't so time intensive job, I'd offer my help. ...but keep searching. Having someone to bounce ideas off is priceless.

The ear condition is unfortunate, but not imposible to overcome. You just need to make sure someone checkes your mix for stereo image before it goes out. It sucks, I know. (Sort of. Tinnitus, both ears.) ...but if you really feel like music is something you love, kick that destiny into a butt. :) (But be really careful about the good ear, though. Especially in clubs, if you visit them.)

Wrote it to different topic recently, but Glitchmachine's stuff's cool. Tougher GUI at times, but great.

the way the sound doesnt continue after a certain point leads me to believe that that's just the kick sample itself
My exact thought.

...but the sample had to be made somehow. I think it is a reverb, but skillfully mixed in. No pre-delay, lot of modulation. They probably had input lowpass and highpass filters (and/or dampning) set so the tail is not grainy and also it doesn't clash with the bass. Probably mixed the reverb's output independetly for further EQing.

I totally agree. A lot of producers that I come across on soundcloud and other forums(including this one) advertise their age or that they're "young" in their artist description.

To suggest that art is bound by age is utter nonsense.
To be fair, it's nothing new. I liked that idea back in 2007 too. It did sound "sexy" even then. The difference is that back then, you looked at the scene and understood it's probably not happening. These days, there were examples of kids who made it. (Good for them though, thumbs up.) ...but it makes a lot of kids feel like they're gonna be the next Garrix. But now I definitely am salty. So back to topic.

Moby! ...he's still active and well. I love his personality on social media btw. He seems like a great guy to have a beer with. :)

Glitchmachine's stuff's cool. GUI is a challenge sometimes, but usually worth it.

I'm also one who votes for using your actual name. My little brother had a name many people mispronounced, so he used a kind of generalized abbreviation and now even though he's a very successful producer (you've DEFINITELY heard of him) he's stuck with one more thing that's fake in an industry where little is real.
That's right. Kevin Séguin isn't bad at all actually. Or you can do some wordplay wid that surename as Nadav suggested. Like "Kevin Segg" or something like that. :)

There was this Autogun plugin by IL few years back essentially having one of their synth engines under the hood, but with only a one selector button on the top.

Even more interesting plugin appeared at one of the KVR developer challenges that made the presets totally random. That was kind of cool. Can't remember name of it...

Age old question. What's your approach?

I guess one of the ways is to force yourself to work quickly. ...there's even this thread on TPF about average time spent on a track. But in it, there's really cool TeeBee's post about spending at least 150+ hours on a track. His tracks are extremely complex, so it's still relatively quick I guess, but anyway... To all of the guys who just can't force themselfs to rush, how do you manage to not get tired of your own ideas?

Writing for others and writing for selfishness is sometimes hard to distinguish among many, but it's there.
There is interesting aspect to this thought though. I totally agree with it and in my opinion the music should be about the message. ...but there's this quite common pattern among starting musicians, or really different musicians, who make music that is not appealing to masses. In extreme cases, not appealing to anyone. That leads to discourage. They seek advice and the most common one they get is: "Well screw others, you're doing it for yourself. It's your expression." This kills the music appeal in some people, but strenghten it in others. I kind of hope I don't have it set up that way, but I can understand people who do. To them, speaking about personal success and ego might come natural. I don't like it, but there's the way how it might start without bad intention at the beginning.

Frank Sobotka
Man, definitely not this one. I'm from Czech Republic and our prime minister's surename is "Sobotka". I have nothing against him, but you simply don't want that. :D

Btw about nick names ... I could use one too. Chose this one as I needed to register forum accounts when I was twelve and got used to it despite it being probably kinda rubbish. (Aslo didnť know at the time that Chris Farley existed.) :D

(Kevin is my real name, it's my last name that is not really pronounceable (Séguin))
I feel you. Greeetings from mr. Koťátko. :D

What about simple "Kev"?

Ok, this might sound as a salty topic, but it won't be, I promise. I'm kinda tired of producers trying to wow audiences by how young they are. Recently I saw video trying to make a sensation out of 11 years old kid.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with it. For example I have massive admiration for Madeon. ...but I thought it might be cool and kind of uplifting to make a thread about guys who rock and kick asses while not being exactly youngest. Young at heart you might say. :)

So for example, the other day I went to my first Hospitality event to see Etherwood live. ...it was cool, so I stayed for London Elektricity and oh my god! That energy! His little dances! Awesome! :D ...and he's on top of the game with all that Dolby Atmos stuff he messes up with these days. Amazing.

Do you know more producers like that? :)

^ This post is also right.

I'll have to admit, my bias against gangsta rap is probably caused by my total inability to identify with their situations. You got me there with NWA example who I kind of did considered out of my taste until I saw the Straight Outta Compton movie recently. ...having said that, still can't imagine what story for example Pitbull tries to tell, but again, that just might be me not being in mr. Worldwide's shoes. ...me having more understanding to Eminem's or Dylan Owen's situations as opposed to anything he was through.

Also absolutely agree about songwriters being storytellers. One day i had TV with a music station on as a background and this One Direction songs came up. Naturally I grabbed the remote to switch the channlel, but ... something got me interested. The song itself was actually pretty solid power ballad. I could totally imagine it sung by some broken sad rocker in some shady room with a cigarette in his hand. So yes. Those songwritters are sometimes really good storytellers selling their stuff for ... eh ... food.

....but again. Now I'm elitistically bashing One Direction. Which is not fair from me, because those girls (and few boys I'd imagine) at the front rows are having time of their lifes. And I guess that's the point at the end, right? It's a boyband concert for them, It might be an Ramesses B's set for me, it might be Guns and Roses played from dusty vinyl for someone else. As far as it makes the listener happy with what they hear, it's all right.

Btw: Didn't know about that 33 y/o cutt of point, but honestly I can see it on some of my friends at 25 already. :D I'm also hoping to not being effected by it. :D

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Native Instruments Komplete 10
« on: January 17, 2016, 05:55:16 pm »
It's really good package. Lot of stuff. It's also kinda opener for other stuff as there are communities making Kontakt multisamples and Reaktor ensembles that you can't load into that "Player" versions.

...having said that though, upgrading process is a little slower as you need to wait until next Komplete version. (For example it kinda hurts now with Reaktor 6.)

A lot actually.
There was a little Ed Sheeran addiction happening last year resulting in listening to quite a few acoustic-ish folkpop-ish stuff. (Ryan Keen, Jack Johnson, Jeremy Loops, lately some old Texas stuff...)
Then I got really a lot into that independent thoughtful hip hop scene. (Dylan Owen - love this guy so much, Witt Lowry, George Watsky, Kinetics & OL)
...and recently, I love those new indie artists like Jack Garrat or Frences (<3 !!! that voice!)

+ love for soundtracks. Jablonsky, Powell, Zimmer, Williams, Price...
