Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Vocal Acapellas
« on: May 09, 2017, 03:21:47 pm »
Usually just a quick Google search or looking around online to see if I can find the acapella I'm looking for. There's a few subreddits on Reddit that are dedicated towards finding and sharing acapellas/stems, such as r/songstems. Other times artists will host remix contests and release the acapella for a particular song, so you could get them that way too.
Also, if you have an instrumental for a song, you can utilize phase inversion with the instrumental+original and sometimes get a clean acapella. It varies from time to time though, I tried doing that with some Madeon instrumentals and most of the time certain elements would remain.

I really love Yoste's work and his lyrics resonate with me a lot. Chihiro is my favorite of his, it makes me think of growing up: "The air was cool and now it burns my lungs" is my favorite line in the track.

Eden's really cool too! His latest EP is a good listen, rock+roll had the most impact on me:

In case you haven't check this out, I think you have a really good chance of finding what you're looking for here: http://www.freesound.org/

I was looking for a sample of kids playing and laughing for an ambient track I did and I found a perfect one on that site, there's loads of sounds to find there. Everything from windchimes to tiger roars. You could also download audio from YouTube videos (like a video of birds chirping) using tools that you can find through Google.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

ooh ive heard of SQ8L, will have to check them out. same with CMT bitcrusher, i mainly use TAL (too much tbh), how much different is the sound of them?

Eh well listening to them side by side now, there's not really a difference. But that's after having to adjust a couple settings on the TAL, CMT has a cleaner sound right from the start (I guess that's why I had the misconception). So I would say it's more about whether you prefer ease of use or flexibility with your settings.

I'm in love with bitcrusher plugins, specifically CMT Bitcrusher and TAL Bitcrusher. Bitcrushing can completely transform a sound and I know artists like K?D use it heavily on their sounds. Both are free, CMT sounds better and is easier to use imo while TAL offers more flexibility.

I also recently found this cool one called SQ8L that has a lot of cool presets: http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=327

Yes I do this a lot! Another trick that I use constantly is opening a track in my DAW, loading up Fabfilter Pro-Q and removing the mid (mono) channel from the song by going into M/S mode and turning the output pan completely right. You can use Audacity for this too and you can do it with stock plugins like Fruity Stereo Shaper. Then it only leaves the side (stereo) signal and usually I'll notice a lot of elements that I wouldn't have noticed before. It also usually removes the vocal and drums (not all the time) so then you can hear certain elements a lot more clearly.

I really like using Divinity by Porter Robinson as an example: https://clyp.it/e02rjit2 There is this one sound that hits around the fourth beat of each measure that is a lot clearer with the mono signal removed (the effect is actually almost entirely stereo, you can barely hear it if you remove the side signal). You can also hear the firework-sounding effect that's pitching down a lot more clearly too.

I may be misunderstanding this technique or not using correct wording but I started using it months ago and it really helps me out!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Microphone Recommendations
« on: January 22, 2017, 12:33:43 am »
I've heard pretty good reviews about the Blue Snowball if your price point is around $50, plus it comes with a desktop stand. Haven't personally owned one but I know a lot of people have used them for YouTube commentaries lol

I used to own a $50 mic but made the decision to go up to an Audio Technica AT2020 and I love it a lot. Much better sound quality ($50 ones tend to pick up background noise) plus it's a USB mic like what you are looking for, except it's around $100 so it's a lot more expensive. I bought a stand for it (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DY1F2CS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and all in all I was a lot happier with the new mic than the old one.

So if you want decent sound quality, I'd say something like Blue Snowball. But I'd definitely recommend saving up for a higher quality mic (especially if it's for music) like the AT2020.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Finding ways to boost creativity

Create late at night at like 12am-3am(probably not for everyone). Don't masturbate, or release in general. Your sexual energy is one of the most powerful forms of energy that one can tap into to use for intention and creativity.

Most of those are designed to help you unwind which is important to get in the right headspace, and masturbation or having a girlfriend may unwind you but it has a way of killing your motivation. Sexual satisfcation makes your subconscious go 'life is good, I can chill now' lol. I've heard of some entrepreneurs giving up sex for a year for this specific reason

That's really interesting, I never thought of sexual energy as a creative aid until now and it makes sense!

Sleep deprivation is a very helpful way of getting in a more creative headspace. Madeon talks a lot about how he utilizes sleep deprivation and he has said that once a year he locks himself in his studio and spends 24 hours straight writing an EP. He says the creative frustration and sleep deprivation puts him in a "weird vulnerable state" (he actually wrote my favorite song of his doing this challenge). Deadmau5 talked about it for a bit in his masterclass and said a lot of his best ideas come at around 3-6am. He talked about it in this YouTube video w/ Steve Duda too: https://youtu.be/u3Gqj1MURco

"There's some real science to this shit" lol but like you said though, that method is not for everyone.

@rixir - nice dude! what kind of stuff are you thinking of remixing? & i can definitely empathize with not wanting to rush, process is very important as is taking ur time! im more setting deadlines for myself because ive had the opposite problem of a lot of time spent with no focus/progress, but everyone has different paths! you can do it. i believe in you.

I really want the first thing I put out to be a Madeon or Porter remix since their music resonates the most with me, but I would definitely want to do it justice and I wouldn't want to commit to it until I felt I could make something unique. Nonsense would be cool to remix, I'd love to rework the arrangement so it builds tension like Madeon did with the live edit:
Sea of Voices or Sad Machine would be fun to remix too!

Get on a "artists to watch out for in 2018" list at the end of the year haha

I really want to produce+release a good remix by April and start putting my name out there. After that, a few more remixes by the end of the year. But I don't want to start releasing stuff until I feel I have the capability of making music that sounds somewhat professional, so that goal might have to be put on hold.

Other than that, just keep learning as much as I can.

Finished Tracks / Re: Worlds Intro (Chet Porter Remix) Remake
« on: January 14, 2017, 02:54:01 pm »
was gonna comment on this but forgot. this is really pretty!! do you have a link to chet's remix anywhere? i can only find live versions. only thing i'd critique is that the vocals sound a little offbeat at 0:54, but that might be the way it was originally.

also, did you do the little fill from Sad Machine at 0:32 yourself? ive always been curious how that sound's made.

Thank you! I guess it's exclusive for his live sets bc I only found YouTube videos of it.

As for the fill, some elements were mine and others were Porter's. The main sound is the original fill from Sad Machine (I would love to know how he did it too. Off the top of my head I would guess he bitcrushed the lead/vocals maybe? I might attempt remaking that later today). The toms that start the fill are mine and there are processed vocal chops layered in there too.

Finished Tracks / Worlds Intro (Chet Porter Remix) Remake
« on: January 07, 2017, 09:04:48 pm »
I remade Chet Porter's remix of the Worlds Intro and would love any feedback on it! It was my first time mixing toms so I'm not sure if they turned out well or not. I also added some new elements into this remake that weren't in the original to put my own twist on it and add more depth to the track.

Hello! I'm Rixir. I’ve been producing for about a year and a half and I use FL Studio. I make music primarily because I want to inspire people the same way my favorite artists have inspired me. Hoping to achieve that by making genuine music that resonates with others. I want to learn as much about music production before I start releasing music, so I’m committing as much time as I can towards learning!

I don’t think i have a defined style yet, but I am heavily influenced by melodic electronic music with emphasis on atmosphere, emotion, and meaning. Also a very huge fan of ambient music and film scores.

You could achieve something like that by running white noise through a filter and automating that filter. Put a low pass filter on your white noise and automate the cutoff to give it a sort of rise. You could also automate a high pass and low pass filter together to give it a sort of "sweeping" sound.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: wtf is happening with me?
« on: November 30, 2016, 05:23:00 am »
An artist feeling insecure about their own work is completely normal. But I've also had moments where I think a melody/chord progression/track I've written is really good, only to look back months later and wonder what I was thinking haha

Don't let it kill your motivation! Let it motivate you to figure out how you can improve instead. I would suggest getting a second opinion on your work, there's a section on the forums that is specifically for that purpose. If you're looking to improve your songwriting, I'd recommend studying music theory. I have been for the past couple months and I can definitely sense an improvement+better understanding of writing music, especially with chords. As for percussion, sample selection is very important. Find good sample packs online or you could always make your own, Splice has a lot of good ones.
