Half way through with your tutorial rn, really good job.

Organized (love the sticky note + the topics), in-depth, all around great essential information

after reading your edit it sounds like your computer goes into balanced mode to save battery life when not plugged in. you can change this in the power consumption options of your computer and change it to high performance mode when its not being charged.

Originally I thought this had something to do with it, but I double checked and the processor power for unplugged and charging are identical, all of the options are the same under the power plan.

I'm still digging around but for now I'll just keep it plugged in  :-\

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / ASIO4ALL: Latency issues

EDIT: problem is fixed when laptop charger is plugged in. problem persists when it is not charging

Hey guys,

So I've been exclusively using ASIO4ALL v2 since my primary sound driver always gives me latency issues.. and Asio4all was able to solve that, for a while.

I'm now experiencing the same exact issues with Asio as I was with my primary driver. The buffering and latency is so horrible that I can't even play a single synth sometimes.. but this is a new issue as Asio never had latency problems for me before.

Comp Specs

Edit: I changed the buffer size to 2048 samples, and it helped a little, but did not fix the issue of crackling/latency.

Edit 2: I closed a lot of open synths and plugins, and it did help, however I still experience some crackling.

Edit 3: My CPU load is just hanging around 90.. but only when this one specific project folder is open, when my laptop charger is not plugged in

Does anyone else have this happening? Suggestions?

Thanks guys

Splice is awesome, definitely recommend.

Aside from that, I try to follow as many producers as I can on various social media platforms and such.
A lot of my sample packs come from referrals and other artists or online stores (Loopmasters, etc).

What genre do you produce? I'll see what I can find for you

FutureProducers, GearSlutz, KVR. In that order I'd say

But I read almost anything whether it's on LBL, Max Vang, SOS, etc

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Basic question on BPM
« on: January 29, 2016, 12:50:16 am »
Exactly! Here's a good little exercise to help you understand it:

  • Make a simple drum pattern at 70 BPM - kick on the 1 and 3, snare on the 2 and 4. Listen to that on loop a few times. First with the metronome, then without.
  • Change the tempo to 140, and put it so you have a kick on the one and a snare on the three. Listen to that on loop a few times. First without the metronome, then with.
Notice anything?

^^ Awesome.

Here's from the Wiki page on tempo/bpm

"Beats per minute (BPM) is a unit typically used as a measure of tempo in music and heart rate. The BPM tempo of a piece of music is conventionally shown in its score as a metronome mark, as illustrated to the right. This indicates that every one minute there should be 120 quarter notes (or crotchets). In simple time signatures it is conventional to show the tempo in terms of the note duration on the bottom. So a 4/4 would show a quarter note, as shown to the right, while a 2/2 would show a minim (or half note)."

Your question, "Does it mean I have to have a certain amount of note percussive or both sounds within that one minute?"

The answer I believe to be no, but my music theory isn't too strong so I could be wrong.

Try changing the bpm of a blank track and watch the timer. When you play 128 bpm you should go through 8 bars in 15 seconds. Now cut the bpm in half and see what happens.

You are correct, 60 bpm = one per second, 120 bpm = one per every half (.5) second

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: How to construct a track
« on: January 28, 2016, 06:53:26 pm »
Oh wow thanks, for the info also I never understood how people build around kicks like how do you drive a kick to make a beautiful chords melody or track, I find it so interesting to rely on a kick for so much I personally like starting with chords and tend to build around chords because I feel all the emotion and and track will be carried on it so If my chords don't sound good I can't progress but I tried to build around kicks it's interesting tbh kinda confusing cause I can't "hear" the sound that should come in next if ya know what I mean you know? I also like build on melodies

I agree it can be difficult to build your track around a kick, but as I mentioned before I do believe it is part of your own style.

Examples: (song intros at least)

Blasterjaxx; atmosphere pad/FX with a spooky pluck melody

Showtek; kick and a lot of drums, snares, percussions

Splice has a good amount of uploaded projects from notable producers to show how they construct their tracks, which instruments and sounds were used and why, etc.

Here's one from KSHMR & DallasK

https://splice.com/kshmr/kshmr-dallask-burn

Often, your approach to building a track will depend on your style. For example, in Nicky Romero's "In the Studio" he states how he begins his tracks with a kick, and will build around that.

Personally I enjoy writing melodies. I produce a lot of big room/electro, and have recently focused a lot on future house. To me the melody of a song is the most memorable aspect, and I like to build my track around the melody for that reason.
