Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: WAVO competitions a joke?
« on: January 26, 2016, 03:43:00 am »
I totally know how you feel, but I will say that the one's that are at the "Top" usually aren't the ones that win.

In the Zedd remix, I was top 10 but someone who wasn't in the charts won (because there remix was good)

Also in the Chainsmokers one, someone who had like 20 votes won. It was cool cause the guy who won happened to live in the same city as me, so I hit him up & we had a session together. So I wouldn't say they're completely a waste, and as under 500 people enter the competition it's safe to say that your remix will be heard by the Artist if it's good

Inspiration.

Most days I have to create my inspiration, or go do other stuff that inspires me to lock myself up in the studio. But even a cool sample or sound you made can be inspiration, and pave the way for an entire track. At least for me it's really important, and nothing gets done if I'm not inspired

I second what Zau said. I used to criticize myself for not wanting to work on music every single day.

Don't beat yourself up (mentally), it can make you resent music.

Take some time off, even if it's for a week or two. Then get back to it with someone inspiration from other things

The health thing is a big one for me. When I get home from work & feel DRAINED and like I dont want to play piano or work on music it's usually because I didn't eat healthy or drink enough water.

Good stuff. Thanks!

You know I've had results both ways... I've locked myself down and said "You have to make something even if it's crappy" and make good and bad music.

Similarly I've felt 'inspired' and come up with complete crap. In the end it's definitely subjective.

One very unconventional method is sleep deprivation. I've had some really good results producing/writing music late night into the morning. I feel a little delirious and get kind of creative. Reality shifts in my brain a bit haha O_o :)... not a permanent solution :P

Thats a great point. I've had results both ways as well. When I force myself & something comes out of it pretty quickly, I'll keep going until the creativity stops. But when I force myself and it just isn't working, I stop, because it just makes me feel crappy and like I don't know what the heck im doing with my life lol.

And I like the no-sleep method as well haha, when I'm inspired anyway. I've literally stayed up like 2 days working on music (with small breaks in between of course). Plus I know Madeon sometimes has 24-hour writing sessions.

Chill yet not boring and still melodic? YAY :D Love it. I wouldn't consider this melodic dubstep though. Nothing really dubby about it. It's more of a melodic future especially with the cutoff on the lead synth. I like it though. Don't know if you were looking for any feedback, but if you are I'd suggest taking a oneshot of some sort (maybe piano or some kind of oneshot pluck) and reversing it then playing it forward on certain parts of the "drop" just to add some extra rhythm and dynamic to the song.

Just a personal taste/suggestion.

I dig it though.

Cheers

Haha true, I don't really pay attention to genres i guess. But thanks!

And honestly I tried like 50 different things in the verse, from plucks to melodies & nothing sounded good to me :O Grrr

What an interesting soothing song!!

The snare sound is powerful and wide. The delay on the voice is fantastic and the song keeps interesting until the end.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it

Hey everyone, thanks for the feedback on this track a while back. I struggled a bit with adding the sort of "depth" I was going for, especially in the verses. But overall I'm pretty happy with it & sent it to some YouTube promo channels. Enjoy :)

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Working with vocalist?
« on: January 13, 2016, 12:33:19 pm »
Hey there, I feel like I may have some good input for ya since I'm a "new artist/producer"

First off, I live in Nashville.. and granted, almost everyone here is a freaking songwriter lol. but even so not many people are into electronic music here. Also I'm pretty introverted so I'm not one to "network" unless it's the internet. so I totally get your struggle.

I've found some great vocalists that I'm working with right now though. 2 are here in Nashville, and 2 are from online. BUT, all of them either emailed or DM'd me because of remixes I posted on SoundCloud. I literally did nothing but make remixes that are in the style that I want my originals to be in, ya know? Treat a remix like an original, and remix songs that have vocalists that you like. So that way when a vocalist hears your remix, hopefully they say "Oh, I love that singer & this remix is good. Im gonna hit them up"

It really is that straight forward. And also look for singers that aren't "huge" but still really good. There's a LOT of the them out there. I've found SO many talented singers with under 1000 twitter followers, and I have all their emails saved for when I need to find a vocalist for a track. Working with smaller artists is a lot more achievable than an artist who is unreachable, or waits 3 weeks to respond to your email and wants a $500 advance.

Remember, Vocalists are looking for great producer/songwriters just as much as we're looking for vocalists.

~ Hope it helps.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: How to protect your own music
« on: January 11, 2016, 01:25:19 pm »
Question for the professional producers out there...
Would you please share your experience on how a composer can protect his own original compositions?
I'd also love to hear tips on what to avoid or what to look for if you are in a position to start selling your music?
I know that usually these kind of things are learnt the hard way after having been ripped off by the recording labels or the publisher.

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Have you registered your music with BMI or Ascap?? That would be the first step, also registering with the copyright office.

As far as selling your music, the two most legitimate ways are through Taxi, and through Music X Ray. Music X Ray is cool cause it's like a middleman between A&Rs and songwriters. You get emails for whatever they're looking for. I get them pretty much daily... Usually it's a pop or r&B artist, or compositions they need for a movie or TV show. Usually you get an advance, but royalties can also happen.

Rules & Announcements / Re: about verification criteria

Why would someone impersonate as other artist anyway? Not like there are special benefits for them.

Can't tell you why exactly, but to be fair someone took the username "Porter Robinson" within like the first hour of making the forum lol.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: 2016 Goals

My only goal is to write music that makes me happy and I'm proud of

That's a great goal. I think that should be a priority  :D

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Ghost Production: Discuss
« on: January 10, 2016, 10:13:15 pm »
I've actually asked non-producer friends of mine if they care that Armin or Tiesto uses ghostwriters for all their songs, and they could not care less. They just wanna hear good music.

Who am I to tell them that they're wrong?

That's true. Some people really could care less. One thing thats worth mentioning though, is that people who don't write their own music will never experience what it feels like to get compliments from people. They might say "Thank You" but know inside they didn't make it. Not that I have an opinion on if its "right or wrong" but I just know they won't experience that amazing feeling  :D

Oh? I only saw one thread about video inspirations and didn't see it in there. My bad :P

After High School, I've slowly seen each of my friend's give up on their dreams. Especially in music.

I know what a struggle it can be and I've wanted to give up myself as well, but now I'm at a point where I understand it takes a LONG time to be very good at what you do. So I'm okay with it, & I've learned to enjoy the process.

This video has helped me, and I had it bookmarked for a long time. I hope it can inspire you to not give up, and learn to enjoy the process :)
