Yea you definitely can't force the emotions or feelings in your music. However, knowing how chords & melodies work with each other is the best tool to express what you're feeling.

Not learning any music theory, is like trying to speak with a very small vocabulary. It would be difficult to express what you're trying to say in a language if you know very little words.

I always start a chord progression for every track, but that's just me. That way I have a definite key I'm working in, and a root note to start the drop with

Mixing/Mastering / Re: How should you layer supersaws?
« on: January 09, 2016, 02:32:30 pm »
I usually make one Main supersaw that can pretty much stand on it's own. (And with 2 octaves of chords)

After that, I'll duplicate it (maybe add a square wave this time) and High Pass around 4k or so, and throw an Exciter on it, to make the higher frequencies more interesting.

Then I'll duplicate once more (if I feel I need low-mids)

I'll put a reverb on the Main SuperSaw, and the high supersaw, and then bounce it out, so that way I can cut off unwanted reverb tails.

If the main focus of your track is the supersaws, then musicality becomes important. One note within a chord or melody can change the whole feeling of the track :D Good luck!

Isolation is the most inspiring thing for me. The times in my life where I have felt the most alone are the times where I have written the most beautiful music. Or being in love, I'll write the most cheesy crap when I feel in love though

Isolation is like a requirement for me lol. I don't mind writing with others but being alone allows me to dive deep into my emotions

I'm sure we've all had this feeling. You listen to your stuff and think it's crap. I used to make music like crazy and not even thinking about the consequences. Now I just cringe while listening to my released stuff.

The weird thing is when I'm making a track I think it's going pretty good. It's only until I export it when I start to notice things I don't like about it. The doubt starts to creep in. I know I've heard worse stuff than mine before but I've also heard much better stuff too.

My question is how do you keep yourself positive about what you make and your progression as a producer?

For me I've always had the issue of working on something, and thinking its REALLY good. only to wake up the next day and be like "meh"

Sound Design / Re: Vocal pitching in logic?
« on: January 09, 2016, 12:57:41 am »
Yea man, I Love logic, but it does lack that. I use SoundShifter & I know Morgan Page and some others do too. It's good for automating pitch at least, snares/risers/vocal chops/etc. But I wish Logic had something like Simpler in Abelton.

Drop sounds great! The mid-range lead in the 2nd drop kinda killed it for me though. Great job  :)

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: How do you get your own style?
« on: January 08, 2016, 07:57:09 pm »
I've been producing for a couple of years and I always feel that I haven't found my own style. How do artists achieve their own style of composition and own sound?

This is an interesting question! Its funny cause some bigger artists have said that they don't really hear "their sound" that everyone says they have. So it's definitely something that happens naturally.

I'm still working on my "sound" but there's certain things I'm naturally drawn to. I've been told my chord progressions (even when they seem completely different to me) have my own style. Using the same sounds & sample selection has a lot to do with it too

Hey everyone. It's really cool to see this Inpsiration/Creativity/Motivation topic.

I used to force myself to write music everyday. And while I can agree it's important to make habits & develop your skills, writing music that isn't inspired by something (at least for me) doesn't work. A while back I watched an Eric Prydz interview where he dives into his process of inspiration, and he says he only writes when he feels inspired.

Eric Prydz Interview:

So what I do now, is I'll work every day, but only on the mundane stuff. Stuff that either has to be done, or makes things easier for me...
Ex: Piano Scales & Arpeggios, Music Theory, Sound Design, Organizing Samples & Presets, Organizing DAW Projects, Watching YouTube Tutorials. Re-Creating tracks by other artists (This is very helpful when you're starting out)

Then when the inspiration hits I immediately open my DAW & make whatever I'm feeling. That way the track is sparked by something very real. An emotion or a feeling.

Sometimes that inspiration comes from art, cinematography, movies, anime, etc. Anything beautiful, really.
Sometimes I'm inspired every day, sometimes it's once a week.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But If you surround yourself with things that make you happy or inspire you, you can translate that into your music.

I'm not saying this is the only way, but in the past I've struggled to keep up with my classical piano stuff and learning production at the same time. I feel pretty content with how I'm doing it now & thought I would share.

The most important thing to remember is no one can stay motivated ALL the time, but working on something every day keeps you focused, and not lazy.

So what you guys do?

"To play wrong notes is insignificant. But to play without passion is inexcusable."
~ Ludwig van Beethoven

Finished Tracks / Re: My remix of Outside .. Need Good Feedback plz
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:27:06 pm »
I would focus on making sure mid/high frequencies are in Stereo, And bass is in mono. Also needs some more mid frequencies in the drop, maybe try making a couple supersaws. Make sure those super saws have some good stereo width though.

I do like the vocal chopping/rise thing you did in the 2nd drop/outro. Maybe tease that in the first drop a little. Good luck!
