You don't need to learn all the synth sounds that would take forever. You just need to get a grasp at recognising fundamental sounds... for example if you wanted to make a nice pluck sound you might want a sine wave with a low pass filter on it being controlled by an envelope with a short decay/sustain and some nice reverb/delay on it(that could be a starting point) Then from there you could decide if you want it to have a bell like character, which in massive you could experiment with the frequency shifter effect as it creates nice inharmonic overtones, once its tuned correctly. A good way to make sounds more natural though is reverb because it puts the sound in a real space, just don't over do it. Heres a video of the pluck im on about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea4hw8rC9_Y

Its the lead/pluck sound that comes in at around 0.18 secs. It sounds really nice, any tips on how i can achieve something close to this?

Cool way to make things sound fresh... Work with different time signatures, 7/8, 5/4, 6/8 . Our ears get so used to 4/4 that when we hear something outside of this it always feels fresh.

You dont always need to tune drum samples, if it sounds good as is, leave it.
But when i tune them first i detect the pitch of the sample...either by loading into edison and using the detect pitch function or by loading it up in a freq analyser. Then i just tune the sample in FL's sampler channel. Couldnt be easier. Also you dont have to tune the sample to the root note of the track you could also tune it to the 5th sometimes this works better because extreme pitch shifting on drums can sound shite. So you want to go to whichever would be the closest to the samples original pitch.

Sound kinda like a sine to me maybe try modulation between a sine and square in massive with an envelope.

Thanks for the tip, I will give it a go.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Need help with Future Bass genre
« on: May 24, 2016, 02:18:24 pm »
Hey, i have been listening to some future bass recently and decided i would try making some.  I ran into a lot of issues though, while i know im a noob to the genre im having a trouble actually coming up with different sections breakdown/build/drop etc that will fit in with the future bass vibe without sounding boring or empty. I can usually get a decent 8 or 16 bar going but thats where i start to run dry on ideas. I have tried listening to see what others do but its really hard to put my finger on what makes theirs work and mine kinda not. Like i know the kinda the vibe i want but i dont really know the way to go about expressing and arranging it. Anyway heres a link to something i started working on to show you where im at. Any tips to go about structure and writing in this genre would be much appreciated.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: connect two chord progressions
« on: May 23, 2016, 10:09:34 am »
I'm assuming you know some music theory? If not get into it because it will help a lot with linking progressions together. Make sure both parts are in the same key or at least closely related to eachother you can check this by seeing what notes are in the chords. For example if you have a part A that's in say C major the part B could be in the relative minor key which would be A minor. They both share the same notes but have a different tonal center.

Usually C major/Am if I want to get an idea down quick I can always transpose it later. On guitar though its usually wherever feels right for the idea.
