Mixing/Mastering / Re: Help with something please

Ok I followed both of you and really worked! Specially the volume one, also I have got a question, should I put a soft clipper or a limiter in the general volume so it always stays below 0 or should I leave it alone without putting anything?

What I do, is lower the mixer volumes of each insert in order for my track to have "headroom". That way, I can add any element I want without worry of clipping. So no, I wouldn't add a limiter.

If I were you, I would put all the sliders down to -INF db (all the way down), and then raise your kick drum to -6db. Them, turn the volume up on your computer so you can hear the kick properly. Next, in order of importance, raise the slider volumes so they work well with the kick. After you have done this, you will have sufficient headroom for your final mix down.

Good luck!

First of all, know that you shouldn't layer sounds unless you have a specific role for each layer. Think it through and see if you can identify each synths role in creating the lead sound.
Second, check the volumes of your synths within the individual synth. If its high a volume, it won't matter at what level the Insert volume is currently at.

I cannot remember who said it, but the saying goes that 80% of mixing is adjusting volumes. Make sure you are aware as you produce of the elements that need to stand out the most, and then continue on by adjusting the volumes based off that element.

Feel free to message me if you have any more questions.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Backing Vocals

I didn't listen to the example tracks, but as a general rule always identify where each vocal section is located in the frequency spectrum. If the backing vocal's tone is lower, cut out more of the higher range and then cut out some of the lower range on the main vocal.

It's all about balance. Stereo widening and reverb help too.

Make sure you have EQ'd the kick's lower range with the sub correctly before editing the lengths. Find the tone of the kick (part that hits the hardest), and raise it a few decibels. Go into the sub bass EQ and subtract a few db from the same exact frequency where you raised it in the kick. You can do it vice-versa with the sub bass as well.
You'll find that each element exists in its own place.

As for shortening lengths. It's all up to you. There is no general rule that exists. I tend to shorten my kicks once and awhile if the lower range drags out for too long.
Also make sure your sidechain is precise.

I commented on it on Soundcloud.

Like I said, this is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
Keep at it dude.

Have you tried the other timestretching algorithms within FL? e3 Generic and Auto don't have any pitch-warping, as far as I know. You might get some artifacts, but you could try it.

This is what I do. You WILL get some artifacts, but I usually counter this by using Gross Beat, and creating a gating effect.

just me but i feel like those drums are a little loud in the beginning, for the fill really quiet things down so that drop gives more life.

Maybe just a little loud. I think it sounds pretty good right now.

I really love this, especially the strings and the vocals; it really adds atmosphere.

If you were to change anything at this point in the track, I would reduce the widening on the delay for the main pluck. That's just my opinion though; it really isn't even a big problem.

Really good though, can't wait to hear the final product.

One of my favorite songs. So good.

Good job!

P.S. What's the midi info? I love that melody.

HELP! How do I create this awesome trance groove?

I've spent hours trying to reproduce a cool sample based groove like this:

https://youtu.be/MS7nGso2BD0?t=73

Does anyone know how they do this? Is there some trick I am missing? To me it sounds like extremely well placed samples in time... Also, are they making these samples or is there a library of cool trance samples? I've heard this in other songs as well.

Someone should take a crack at this one. :)

I pretty much mix as I go. Don't know why, but it works for me.

Think about how the compressor does its job of reducing the dynamic range: You set a threshold where any peak above it is turned down in volume at a ratio of X:1, where X dB in is heard as 1 dB out. So 2:1 means every 2 dB above the threshold is output as 1 dB (so a sound going 4 dB over the threshold will come out only 2 dB above, etc., etc.). It doesn't normally cause an increase, because by decreasing the dynamic range you're actually lowering the ceiling on the overall volume.

Your compressor probably has an auto-makeup enabled for the gain, so as you are reducing the dynamic range and making the overall sound quieter, the program is turning up the output gain so that the peaks remain at their original volume - making everything that did not hit the compressor louder as a result.

If I were you, I'd go diving through the Mixing/Mastering subforum for the threads on compressors and watch a few videos on the specific effects of what a compressor does and how it does its job, and it should become more clear!

I was just about to say the same thing: there is probably a make-up gain on your compressor.

armin said he needed 20 something sounds for the main lead in

20 layers for a lead? :o

If you need that much, he's choosing the wrong sounds.

Right? I layer like 2-3 for a lead...

I really want to know how Ilan did the layering of this awesome track.
I can hear the chord progression, but I have no clue how he layered the saws.

Please help me.. :(

Been trying to figure out how to get even somewhat close to that status for awhile. It's so hard...
