80% of (good) mixing is in the faders.

For trance, Freshly Squeezed Samples has the good stuff. Sunny Lax Studio Essentials, and the Dave Parkinson pack are prime.

Also, the best free sample pack I've used is the Monoverse pack. It's amazing. It really shouldn't be free...

I've found that Serum is the best for creating simple bass shots. I used Spire before, and it was always tough to get that "grit".

A good way to get that grit is to use aggressive distortion.

hi!

I really like this, a very pretty melody and chord combination, I would make the kick a bit quieter (or maybe reduce the punch a bit w EQ) but only slightly...
apart from that it's hard to say as it seems like the track is just starting and could end up much longer, hope this helps!

Thanks man! Thats all I needed to hear!  :)

Really diggin this. I've been on a Matt Lange binge recently. Nothing really stands out as "bad" to me. However, I think I can add some input to a few ideas to make them better.

Your chords are great. Love how they build up through the entire song. As you get to around 1:20, its starts to sound a *tad* repetitive. What would be could is if you automated the attack time on the synth amp. For a few beats or whatever, bring up the automation, then bring it down. It adds interest, and it (might) sound cool.

At 2:15, maybe add a filter on the kick to cut out a few of the lows. It (kind of) sounds strange when the kick has bass, but the sub isn't there.

Also, maybe add a few ambient/dark synths with high reverb to put them in the back. It could add tons of depth.

Again, GREAT work. Love this a lot. These are suggestions only to improve your already amazing track. Keep at it bro and HMU if you want more feedback!

WIPs / Re: Honestly I think it's one of my best song

It's good! Think it just needs more "energy" in the drop, at least in the second half of it.

Agreed. Try adding a new element like a piano or something to bring the listener back. Add interest. Example: This is a track I'm working, notice how I add a piano at 4:30? Try doing something similar. https://soundcloud.com/erikf-2/master-6/s-XxFy9

As for the drop, a nice way to add energy initially is to automate the stereo field of the entire song. I bring mine close 50% mono right before I want to introduce a big element (like a chorus), and then I slam it back up when the "drop" hits.

Another tip: bounce your buildup to .wav and then cutoff and reverb tails or whatever right before the drop. It'll add punch and it really adds interest.

Just started this today. What do yall think?

I've been having a problem with SC, too. My track is always much quieter.
As for your highend... Do you have a -1db ceiling after mastering? Could be your problem.
Soundcloud always destroys my highend to a certain point tho.

Love this A LOT. Sounds really good.
However, I don't like the change that the choir makes at 0:55. It needs a little more release, I think.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: What Order Do You Mix?
« on: May 10, 2016, 02:51:50 pm »
I bring all my faders down to -INF. I really recommend mixing your kick & bass first. They are the backbone of your entire track; getting those two things squared away first is really important.

After that, I mix in order of next importance. Typically I work my way up the "frequency chain". If an element contains lower frequencies than another element, say a piano vs. a high hat, than I'll mix the piano first.

Good luck bro!

Put Fabfilter - PRO L on master and boost it for about 30 db .

Exactly.

Using only a single synth, what's some weird stuff you guys can come up with?

Really digging the mix on this track. I would continue with the melody at the drop, though. It's a really good melody, too.

For the breakdown, I would add a few ambient synths. Maybe a pluck that is slightly similar to the lead that follows after the pad. Put a lowpass filter on it and open the envelope as it goes on.

Some white noise sweeps wouldn't be bad either.

FL Studio has a nice plugin called Slicex that does this well. Check and see if your DAW has anything similar to it.
