Subtractive EQ before side chain compression, or any form of compression for that matter to me generates the best results. Cut out those yucky and useless frequencies first before compression. Then Additive EQ (if necessary) after the compressor. So if you have spots in the sound that you can and want to boost, this is where you would do it. In short, sometimes you'll need 2 EQs, both before and after the compressor.

I like this approach. I was definitely referring to a lead channel that is sidechained to my kick and snare

Mixing/Mastering / EQ before Sidechain Compression or after? Or both?
« on: July 08, 2016, 03:44:52 pm »
For years I've maintained that EQ'ing after my sidechain compression is the way to go because I heard it somewhere on the net. (haha I know) I've included a screen shot of my processing chain on a Lead Synth. The first 2 chains are for making the sound pleasant. Then I follow with my two sidechain compressors and an EQ. Is this a good approach for a channel that is being sidechained by my kick and snare signals? What are the reasons for EQ'ing after or before your sidechain? Much Love!

Mixing/Mastering / Editing the length of Kick Samples/Starting points
« on: April 15, 2016, 06:05:10 pm »
So, the context of this post is referring to broken beat drum pattterns. The particular track I'm working on is Dubstep.
Most Kick samples from any sample pack will have a length between 1/4 note and 1/8 note, but for some tracks I feel the need to shorten them down to 1/16th note in total length to let my sub bass come in quicker and cleaner.

I side chain my sub bass to my actual kick drum so at 150 BPM with a Kick Sample that is nearly a 1/4 note, I feel like it doesn't let my sub come in quick enough. Is it a bad habit to shorten to length of my kick samples? Am I ruining the punch of my drums? It shouldn't really affect my transient except for the length... Just wondering suggestions and what you guys do if a kick sample is the right sound, but the release is too long to sit with your sub properly.

I also am wondering how to decide what exact point in a kicks transient do I sit on the one beat of every pattern? Is there an article anywhere about how to line up your transients properly on the 1 beat?

This pack is massive. 200 presets + tables.

I'm wondering if you all find it useful, and if so what wave tables do you like?

Any specific sick ass presets that stand out? I like to recreate + dissect the top 10% of every pack myself for good measure.

Thanks in advance!

I'm looking to compare a song I have to some similar tracks that would work in the club. I need Drumstep and even Trap. Pegboard Nerds - Hero is a good example of what Im working on, but I'm in the 155 - 165 BPM range. I have the hardest time finding songs in the 155 - 165 BPM range. Can you suggest any?

Thanks!

I dig it! I like how your Kick has a bit of stereo top to it. Sounds like reverb or something almost, but it doesn't sound muddy. I like the main synth line a lot, but it feels like it could be a bit more bright in some places. Maybe use distortion or saturation. Your percussion / hi hats seemed to have a strange groove at the beginning, but they sounded fine further along in the track. The end is nice and full, and it sounds great! Well done. Although I don't really listen to techno, but this is well produced! I posted a track in this topic just a bit ago, it's a few spots below yours.

Give it to me straight guys. I know the verse and build are a bit underwhelming, but I've been holding on to the song for far too long. Is it ready to be public on Soundcloud?

Abletons tuner is usually pretty on point, sometimes you have to change the pitch of the sample if you want it to register though.
You're talking about the tuner that comes up for all individual samples right?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Tuning Drum Samples in your DAW

What do you all use to tune your drums? I use Melodyne... I've been wondering if this is not a good idea for resampling purposes, but I do think it works fine in most cases to my knowledge. However, it often detects the sample to have a different pitch when you run it through Melodyne several times....

I usually only tune my Kicks, Snares, and Crashes. Do you guys tune hats and other Percussion sounds? Generally I wont unless it's a tom or something. Do you have any processes that you would suggest in Ableton or any other DAW? I use the pitch adjustment on samples as well if needed.

You just pursue making the music you like. Whatever makes your head bob man. You have to make lots of tracks before you find your own style. Just keep trying to do what your favorite producer does.
