Mixing/Mastering / EQ before Sidechain Compression or after? Or both?
« on: July 08, 2016, 03:44:52 pm »
For years I've maintained that EQ'ing after my sidechain compression is the way to go because I heard it somewhere on the net. (haha I know) I've included a screen shot of my processing chain on a Lead Synth. The first 2 chains are for making the sound pleasant. Then I follow with my two sidechain compressors and an EQ. Is this a good approach for a channel that is being sidechained by my kick and snare signals? What are the reasons for EQ'ing after or before your sidechain? Much Love!

Mixing/Mastering / Editing the length of Kick Samples/Starting points
« on: April 15, 2016, 06:05:10 pm »
So, the context of this post is referring to broken beat drum pattterns. The particular track I'm working on is Dubstep.
Most Kick samples from any sample pack will have a length between 1/4 note and 1/8 note, but for some tracks I feel the need to shorten them down to 1/16th note in total length to let my sub bass come in quicker and cleaner.

I side chain my sub bass to my actual kick drum so at 150 BPM with a Kick Sample that is nearly a 1/4 note, I feel like it doesn't let my sub come in quick enough. Is it a bad habit to shorten to length of my kick samples? Am I ruining the punch of my drums? It shouldn't really affect my transient except for the length... Just wondering suggestions and what you guys do if a kick sample is the right sound, but the release is too long to sit with your sub properly.

I also am wondering how to decide what exact point in a kicks transient do I sit on the one beat of every pattern? Is there an article anywhere about how to line up your transients properly on the 1 beat?

This pack is massive. 200 presets + tables.

I'm wondering if you all find it useful, and if so what wave tables do you like?

Any specific sick ass presets that stand out? I like to recreate + dissect the top 10% of every pack myself for good measure.

Thanks in advance!

I'm looking to compare a song I have to some similar tracks that would work in the club. I need Drumstep and even Trap. Pegboard Nerds - Hero is a good example of what Im working on, but I'm in the 155 - 165 BPM range. I have the hardest time finding songs in the 155 - 165 BPM range. Can you suggest any?

Thanks!

Give it to me straight guys. I know the verse and build are a bit underwhelming, but I've been holding on to the song for far too long. Is it ready to be public on Soundcloud?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Tuning Drum Samples in your DAW
« on: January 10, 2016, 11:38:45 pm »
What do you all use to tune your drums? I use Melodyne... I've been wondering if this is not a good idea for resampling purposes, but I do think it works fine in most cases to my knowledge. However, it often detects the sample to have a different pitch when you run it through Melodyne several times....

I usually only tune my Kicks, Snares, and Crashes. Do you guys tune hats and other Percussion sounds? Generally I wont unless it's a tom or something. Do you have any processes that you would suggest in Ableton or any other DAW? I use the pitch adjustment on samples as well if needed.
