Just watched this today.  Found it to be REALLY informative.  Spencer seems like a genuine guy with a lot of production experience he's willing to share.  He shares tips on his workflow, his plugins, mixing/mastering, etc.

I'm a fan.

On this video, deadmau5 and duda talk about how they cut things below 20-30hz..

29 years old here.  I think maybe one reason the thought of "young producers" is present is because a lot of them frequent forums and other electronic feedback devices.  In other words, young people utilize and are more "active" on social media and other Internet means that "older people" (since when did 30 become old? haha).

Also, societally, things are geared towards the younger generation. Music, advertisements, media, products, fashion...all are heaviliy skewed towards young people.  Sad, really.

Can I ask why you're upgrading from the 2i2?  Does it not do what you need it to?  Or do you need more inputs/outputs?  (Obviously, if this is the case, Scarlett has larger versions).

Yeah, I'm with FarleyCZ, I don't buy it.  It MOSTLY takes luck, or rather "being in the right place at the right time."  A lot of famous artists (I'm talking EDM here) were producing well before the EDM scene really took off (especially in the US).

Take deadmau5 for example.  He was producing on his own in his parents' house, started working at a studio learning the ins and outs of hardware production, and was a bit of raver.  He knew Steve Duda and one day they were messing around and saw that mp3.com (or was it beatport?) had some EDM on there.  Up to that point, he hadn't really produced a lot of 4 on the floor type beats, but when he heard what was top-ranked on the site, he knew he could do better. So him and Steve (together: BSOD) produced a "joke" track called "this is the hook" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AnmTP5L-9U) as a tongue-in-cheek joke.  Thing is, it was actually good and well-produced for its time.  It quickly topped the charts.  This all happened as the EDM scene was blowing up and well...the rest is history.

If you listen to deadmau5 or follow him closely, you know that he dabbles in a lot of non-EDM electronic music.  In fact, you could say that truth be told, he "dabbles" in EDM, cuz that's the moneymaker of his time.  I'm not implying that he's a "sellout" or anything, just saying that it took the mix of his talent, background, connections and being at the right place at the right time for him to become a massive global phenomenon.

you have to sacrifice your life if you want to make music

I don't really see it that way vinceasot.  Yes, you may have to make certain sacrifices to pursue music (especially professionally), but I don't think you have to sacrifice YOUR LIFE.  I know that you didn't mean it in a literal manner, but even figuratively, I think it's a bit of an overstatement.

There have been many times in my life where I've felt "guilty" about not producing music enough.  I know that music is my passion.  I know this because of the many "tests" it passes (like "what keeps you awake at night?" and "what do you lose track of time doing?") and because others close to me have confirmed this.  So, once I came to the realization that music is my "thing", I suddenly felt a lot of pressure to pursue it at the expense of all other things.  This did two things: it made me feel bad about NOT making music and it put MORE pressure on me to make it - neither of which is helpful.

I think it comes down to - what is the purpose or role of music in your life? Is it your everything? Do you WANT to sacrifice your social life, your marriage, your schooling, your other areas of interest for music?  What priority does it have in your life?

Things can get deep quickly here.  I end up thinking about what I want to be remembered by or the cliche "what do you want written on your tombstone?"

For me, music is A passion, but not THE ONLY passion.  I also am passionate about having a good marriage, a healthy social life, eventually being a good father.. so i'd rather sacrifice MUSIC for most of these things.

I must, however, admit that I don't have all of this figured out and I still struggle with it mentally.  I think, especially in Western culture, there's a lot of pressure to become "famous" or be "known".  A lot deals with recognition, soundcloud plays, twitter followers, etc.  Validation is found in these channels via other people.  And I think that's dangerous. To base your self-worth (or musical success or fulfillment) on other people is risky.  Better to find satisfaction within (or say, in a higher power)

Just my 2 (or 3 or 4) cents..

I have a full-time job and am married and just finished my Master's degree.  So, essentially the only "time" I would have is on nights and weekends.  As Mussar said, you can always "find" time if you want it bad enough.  Thing is, most mornings I don't "want it" bad enough to make music for an hour.  I think I've come to a realization that while music is my passion, it's not my EVERYTHING.  And that's okay.

Learn to play the piano

Not hard to explain this one. Its an absolute must. Producers who play with there clicker finger don't ever make it that far.

Yeah, just look at Joel Zimmerman. He can't play the piano and he got nowhere!

jk google deadmau5 son

I'm actually going to a concert during late may at the hollywood bowl to see A&B's live acoustic set.  :D

Just found out they're coming to DC as a trio (rare, I guess - usually it's just two of them) for two dates around July 4th.  I went to an anjunabeats show at the same venue earlier this year and it was fantastic.

Holy crap, the last three posts have been EXCELLENT!

1. Not normally into drum n bass, but that rameses track was beautiful.
2. Worlds Full Set - YES YES YES.  Saw him in DC. Incredible. Can't wait for his new stuff, next tour, etc.
3. Above & Beyond acoustic set - I always hear about them doing these, but never actually watched it.  I skimmed through it and it sounds really wonderful.  Bookmarked to watch in full later.

Keep 'em coming!
