I've seen this mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but an awesome free ePiano library is mda ePiano. I love it! :)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Multi-Band Compression Topic
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:29:00 pm »
I use it on nearly everything to various degrees. Pro MB is a great multiband compression plugin because you can get more particular with the bands you want to compress. The only thing I don't use multiband compression on is the master, but nearly every group will have a pro MB on it, sometimes just controlling one very narrow band and only very slightly.
Would love to hear what specific instances you use this for. Is it for controlling annoying frequencies? (this is something I've been messing with recently)

A quick question on Sidechain -

Does anyone ever use multiband sidechain compression? In this particular instance, I'm looking to duck only the Sub from my Bass bus but not the higher frequencies. I was playing with Trackspacer for this purpose.

Would be interested to see what other techniques people use.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: tuning drums
« on: January 06, 2016, 09:02:10 pm »
I've seen people use entirely A-tuned kicks in a track set to E. The idea that you need to tune the drums to key is pretty stupid IMO.

I mean, A and E are a 5th apart (or a 4th, if the track is in E), which is a harmonically 'pleasant' interval.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Awesome free plugins!

Share any invaluable, awesome free plugins you know here.

I'll start us off:

Xfer OTT - Crazy multiband compression thing? If I'm not mistaken modeled after a preset in the stock Ableton Multiband.
Voxengo SPAN - Free Spectrum Analyzer. This thing is arguably my favourite plugin ever! ;D Fun-tip: Hold Ctrl while clicking on frequencies to isolate them.
Voxengo MSED - Simple Mid/Side EQ I've taken a serious liking to recently.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Tell us your master chain!

If I'm creating a homemaster of my stuff, which is mainly just used for submitting demos I run the following chain:

UAD bx_digital V2 (used solely to Mono sum everything below ~120 hz), VBC FG-MU (running very lightly about 1-2 db of compression max), UAD Precision Maximizer, Virtual Tape Machines and then Invisible Limiter.

If I'm sending to a label to be mastered I generally leave it with the UAD bx_digital (again solely for the Mono on the low end) and the Virtual Tape Machines. I find the VTM smooths things out subtly and in a pleasant way.
