Mixing/Mastering / Re: Stereo Separation
« on: January 25, 2016, 06:52:45 am »
I just use a M/S EQ and do it as I go along on individual tracks.
I've also really started doing this. I fear like a couple of my productions have actually overdone it! But, it's brought a new level of clarity to my mixes as things sit in 'their place' in the stereo mix better now. Voxengo MSED is a great free little plugin for this. :)

Gotta say I've often wondered this too. I like to 'think' in 4 parts or so when writing, and to keep movements in a way that make sense melodically - but don't stick to rigid counterpoint or correct voice leading rules.

Sadly as time passes, I find myself forgetting many of these rules anyway  :'(

One of the redeeming features in Cubase...can do this directly from the Export menu :)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Tuning Drum Samples in your DAW

Has anyone discovered a very good way of doing this in Cubase? This is one of my major gripes with the software...for me to edit sample tuning I have to currently load it in to a 3rd party sampler (like Kontakt) or use a 3rd party plugin (like Waves SoundShifter) to even find the tuning that sounds right. Then I can choose to either pitch shift the sample (which often destroys any transients) or leave it with the 3rd party stuff on.

FL and Ableton seem to kill Cubase for this.

Just tell me an RMS to aim for and give me a .wav with a little headroom and I'll do my best at it!
I came for the topic, then stayed for the Dota 2 reference in the username! ;)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Stretching Samples

This isn't quite what you were asking, but I cannot recommend this oldschool piece of software enough: PaulStretch!

Seriously, this thing is amazing for stretching things out and making atmospheric madness with them. :)

I've spoken to him a bit about production, I know that he uses Maximus (FL Multiband Compressor) quite a bit. You can also get it as a standalone VST.

I love the Valhalla Plugins for 'placing' things in the mix. Giving some room to drums, etc.

ArtsAcoustic is my go to for lush, long reverb tails. I use this for Pads and other long Reverb FX.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Let's talk clipping

Like clipping? Try Sonnox Inflator - the best clipper + psyco acoustical processor IMHO.
Want to use clipper as mastering limiter - google "infected mushroom clipping" - they use 2 sounds cards (rme and orpheus) to record from 96 to 44.1, etc
How different is this to the UAD Precision Maximizer?

I feel like I'm one of the few that still uses Cubase! Sadly I wish I was completely proficient at Ableton/FL but Cubase just feels like an extension of my body now, and I'm not sure I could ever pick up another DAW to the same level of comfort I have now.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Experience with sub pacs?
« on: January 08, 2016, 10:26:13 pm »
I had one but sent it back after a few days, it does feel like you are sitting behind a big system n a club and you can really feel was happening in the low end department but it wasn't that comfortable to sit back on for long studio sessions
Is it easy to remove / attach? For quick monitoring / low-end checks.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Your favourite Hardware Synths...?!

My Moog Sub 37 trumps any software that I've got. You can get the richest analogue sounds from that thing which really can't be replicated. Most of my basslines and leads come from it.
Dude, I just bought this synth over Christmas and it is such a monster. I freaking LOVE it! :)

Kill the noise posted a video on facebook regarding this. Will try to find it and link it here

Awesome thanks. I actually went back to VolumeShaper for this, and am sidechaining the sub very hard, with the rest of the bass sound only by about 25%. Makes it all pump quite nice but not overly noticeably.

A quick question on Sidechain -

Does anyone ever use multiband sidechain compression? In this particular instance, I'm looking to duck only the Sub from my Bass bus but not the higher frequencies. I was playing with Trackspacer for this purpose.

Would be interested to see what other techniques people use.
What I recommended previously, Volume Shaper 4, will do this perfectly. It's a 3 band volume envelope processor with MIDI triggering.
Oh very cool. I'll check this out!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Headphones for mixing - need help
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:40:56 pm »
I can't recommend the Sennheiser HD650's enough. I purchased them after A/Bing with a few other headphones priced similarly (around $400) and they sounded incredibly clear. Very comfortable too!

I really recommend checking them out at a local store. Here's an Amazon link.
