Mixing/Mastering / Re: How to let your pads fit into the mix
« on: January 13, 2016, 08:49:51 pm »
My pads tend to have lots of surgical subtractive eqing. That way, they are only hitting very specific frequencies, allowing them to fill the gaps rather then take over the mix.

^^^ thats a pretty good idea. The only issue I can potentially see is that it creates a weird groove being slightly ahead of the grid

Has there ever been a point where release deadlines have gotten closer and closer, and a lack of inspiration has created a fear that you won't make any tracks in time?

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Your Favourite Reference Tracks
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:47:13 pm »
My go to reference tracks are usually pop actually (Taylor Swift, Carly Ray Jepsen, One Direction) simply because I love the structure pop tracks have and I find it challenges me nicely to have a reference track in a different genre to what I normally make.

That is a cool idea. I think I will test drive it. I usually choose a track in similar style, that I emotionally connect with. One that brings out feelings that I would want to portray in my track. It is always changing as there is so much new music coming out all the time. I usually choose a different track for each project I'm doing.

Yes, thats important. I think you need to change your reference track multiple times for each song. If you get stuck with the same one, your ears get used to it and you remove the purpose of a reference track in the first place.

P.S. I love typing the word reference on a qwerty keyboard. The letters are perfect spaces apart  :D

A lot of people tend to use their kicks to trigger their side-chains, which works great in some cases but the tail of the kick often leads to it going over the top and loosing a lot of the sound.

I've attached a really tight "Tap" which I use as the trigger for my side-chain, it has no tail at all and makes all the difference.

I really agree with this. Never use the kick in your mix as the side-chain trigger. It causes you to change your kick just to change your side-chain effect. In order to stay in complete control you should separate the two and have them changeable without effecting each other.

Don't: Stick to one genre of music.

Preach brother preach!

I could not agree with something or someone more.

The more tools you are able to learn the more options you have to develop your art.

I like this. I also like how quotable people are being here, nice and philosophical

IF YOU MAKE SOMETHING UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL, YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL

This is the most important thing in all genres of music. If you set out to copy a certain style because you like it, you will have a much harder time doing well. Oliver Heldens was successful because what he started doing was different. As with Skrillex, as with Flume, as with Deadmau5, as with Madeon.

Mat Zo just got lucky  ;)
