R&A Graveyard / Re: "Finished Tracks" Section Sucks rn
« on: January 17, 2016, 08:57:29 am »
The trouble with that kind of system is that people will just quickly post a couple of "COOL TRACK LOVE IT" messages and then post their own.

I think as the forum gets bigger the real problems with that forum will be (1) people who come in just to promote something, and (2) the sheer volume of posts. I think having a strict limit on posting there would be more useful than a feedback-for-feedback arrangement. For example, you have to have 50 posts on the forum before you can post there, and each user is limited to one post there per week.

Or maybe you could spend some (5?) of your "Honor" points to make a post there.

If someone's a valuable and helpful member of the community I think they deserve to show off a track every now and then, even if their helpful posts haven't been in the feedback forum.

I think it's fine to have lots of things going on at once, and it's OK if one part is hard to follow during a section. The important thing is that each section of the track should have ONE CLEAR THING to follow. For example in a vocal track the listener is going to focus on the vocal, and in a rock song's guitar solo they're going to focus on the guitar. In EDM you have to be careful to make something the focus for each section, as it's tempting to make all of the synths stand out equally.

As Kinesthetics said, your parts should take turns taking the front of the stage... and it's completely OK to automate the volume down on a part, simplify it, filter it, or send it further away with reverb when it's not the focus.

Finished Tracks / Re: Days Of High Adventure (something progressive)

I like it!  It reminds me of classic electronica like Giorgio Moroder or something, but with a bit of a more modern vibe. Definitely creates a mood. I like the voices too.

Maybe a bit long--I'd like to see it change things up a bit if it's going to be 7.5 minutes long. But then again it fits with the old-school evolving vibe.

Thanks!  It's great to get some feedback. It's definitely halfway between trance and prog house -- I was aiming at trance originally, but I ended up with that percussive melody at the beginning that isn't really trancy, and I liked the tempo better at 129 than 134.

I was going for simple with the melodies, I've been doing that lately because my melodies used to be "so complex nobody could follow them."  Appreciate the feedback on the lead synth, I agree and I'll see what I can do with it.

Thanks again!

R&A Graveyard / Re: Different sub forums for DAWs?
« on: January 15, 2016, 01:10:54 am »
I think this forum is doing it right. It's always a bad idea to add sub-forums just because they sound like good ideas. The time to add a sub-forum is when the main forum is so full you need to split it up -- i.e. "There are tons of Ableton-specific posts in the production forum so we need a sub-forum for those."

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: [Ql Creating (logical) melodies

If you have chords, arpeggiate them. Sometimes you'll hear a melody in the arp (or just like the way the arp sounds as a melody). Or just remove some notes from the arp at random until what's left sounds good, and add some in-between notes if needed. Repeat over and over until you like it.

The EDMPROD post linked above is great too.

Finished Tracks / Re: Abissica - On Fire (Progressive Trance)

It sounds like House when the hats and snare are going -- they're really high-end and open and I like the way they sound with the track. It sounds more like Trance when they're absent. If I had one criticism it would be the drastic changes between those two -- for example at 4:10 the hats and snare drop out. It still sounds good, but I miss that airiness, and there wasn't a transition to signal that something was changing. Maybe fade them, or end them with a crash or other dramatic note?

Nice track, though, I love the bass sound and the repeated vocal lines.

It really depends on the type of kick. There are three basic types of kick sounds in EDM -- at least this is how I categorize them.

1. The tonal kind, with a long tail and a clear sub note (like a distorted 808 kick)

2. The more noisy kind, covering a large frequency with no clear note (like some acoustic kicks)

3. The ones with a really strong pitch envelope, that almost sound like a "laser zap" noise (like a lot of classic drum machine kicks)

Some EDM genres use one particular type. In house and trance I've heard all three types.

Type 1 has a clear note, so you need to be aware of which note it's playing. It doesn't have to be the root note but you probably don't want a super-dissonant tone.

Type 2 usually doesn't have a recognizable note. If your ears or a tuner can't find a note, this is probably the case. In this case, it's probably not necessary to tune it. (This is why rock bands don't worry about tuning kicks).

Type 3 can have a recognizable pitch, depending on how fast the pitch envelope is. You might have to tune those too.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Best (your favorite) Kick samples?

For trance and progressive house I like the Freshly Squeezed Samples ones. I have their "trance kick essentials" and the Sean Tyas pack and those work for 90% of my tracks.

Melodic progressive house. Feedback is welcome.
