So this is our latest, an epic string-driven soundtrack tech-house track, where huge drums and widescreen synths collide with bass heavy techno rhythms and 303 tweaks.  Or, as someone pointed out - “like Hans Zimmer meeting Acid House”.  It’s certainly unique.

Hope you enjoy!

Thanks! That's a pretty good review, it's what the aim was too. Thanks for checking it too!

The first track of the new EP from 8b_tch and Cult Heroes sees bassline house collide with Prodigy-style breakbeats: A killer bassline with ridiculously funky drums add up to a surefire floor filler and bassbin mover.

I went to Guitar Center & tried some out. While they're not 8's They're Yamahas HS7's & I thought they were amazing. Tbh I don't want to cut corners like you said, I'd rather pay good money than have pair that are of no use to me & be dissatisfied with them

I have HS7s, after having MAudio BX5s - big difference in my mixes, tighter and more balanced. Mine are close to my wall so the bass is cut on the speakers themselves and I still find I use headphones for microscopic checks but would heartily recommend the HS7s. Note I'm doing not only tech and such but also bass-heavy stuff like Jungle, U.K. Hardcore and Bassbeat (somewhere between bassline house and breakbeat).

RYTM with Overbridge.  Not a massive fan of layering, try to get the sound right initially when I can.  It does have its uses though, in awkward mixes.

Thank you for the compliments and the advice. I think one problem I've had with techno vs other genres is the feeling of "dirtiness".  Other genres try and get a clean mix and techno thrives on being dirtier.  I just have a problem feeling when it's finished because I want to keep adjusting the mix.

I get what you mean by clean, though here that's not a bad thing at all.  The effect you're after might be best achieved on the master bus, or better yet by being mastered by a mastering engineer to your spec of grit.  To make this gritty, I'd use plugs like Soundtoys Decapitator or Radiator, a tape sim like Waves Kramer or Abbey Road, and maybe the Opressor in the Eventide Ultrachannel sparingly on the master, or heavier on groups, like drums and bass.

The other thing, like the others have said, is variety.  I think actually some rearrangement would negate some of that need, maybe shorten passages to keep the pace up.

Good stuff though!

That's excellent, well paced, well mixed techno.  Has few elements but keeps it interesting, a very tough thing to do.  It sounds a bit like Speedy J circa Loudboxer, albeit slower.  A good thing.

Will check your SC!

Technically the synth is more than capable of producing the majority of sounds available from subtractive synthesis. Look at what Dance was made with originally, with the likes of the Bellefield Three and 808 State using cheap old kit like the SH101 and DX100 and learning the fuck out of it. Coupled with a good sampling instrument, you've a huge sonic palette already.

It's easy to get too hung up with Pokemon collect-em-all with plug ins!

Jeeez Matt you've gone in ! I've held off for so long ,but think it's time to start . My fav is the Prophet 12 and the Sub37 .

I'm about to off my MKS50 and Little Phatty towards the new OB6 when they're for sale in the UK, but would be curious to know how the P12 stacks up in terms of sounding analogue, given it's more towards digital?  Or is it all about the immense sonic palette with the P12?  I just worry the possibilities might be too much and the sound not as warm.

fuck the p12, get the oberheim.

Ha, cheers, maybe you should work for Future Music, though you'd have to award everything at least 4 stars, such is their objectivity.

It sounds incredible though, I'll just have to do with Diva in the meantime (no bad thing).

That's really warm, what's the second piano-like sound from?  Has that Rustie sound but much warmer, I found his stuff a bit cold, this is well balanced and while there's a lot going on, it's well mixed and all the parts can be heard.  Where are the images from, they look familiar?

Stylistically it's not my thing, so I can't judge how it might compare, so apologies iI can't be an authority on the structure.  To me though, the first build, while probably meant to fool the dance floor, could - from a DJ point of view - maybe not sit well as the energy drops off quite a bit.

There's definitely energy there though, and the use of the heavy white noise as a lead instrument is kinda cool, reminded me of older, heavier Mauro Picotto when dropping back in.  I'm surprised, given how well that sound works with compressor pumping that you've not gone for that.  You've got a nice open image and I can understand why you might not want to pump compress it, but I'd side chain that noise with the kick - not loads, french style, but enough to make the track breathe, like the kick and the lead are pushing to get out of the speakers.

Hope that's helpful!

To me it sounds like somewhere between older, 90s Melodic Techno (like Drexcyia and the Artificial Intelligence stuff on Warp) and Synthwave, as it has that late night 80s/90s TV drama / sci-fi (the Blade Runner samples help that!) or maybe even game soundtrack quality to it.  The image is great, as is the separation though for me the drums are a bit low - the kick especially if you're aiming for a dance style - if you're not, and going for 80s electro style, it's fine, maybe just up a bit to drive the track along, otherwise the bottom is being dictated by the (very chunky and nice) bassline.  The high pitched lead is nice though I think maybe watch it about 2.5k-5k as it's a bit sharp on my HS7 monitors and I'm listening quite low.

Hope that's useful!

It's a really nice sound, lush, wide, and the track flows correctly, it does't jar

It might benefit from a central something, such as a vocal or a melody / lead instrument that ties the two halves together, as currently the pad seems to be doing that and really that's noted ideal instrument to carry the track - that's noticeable when the 'verse' part drops energy after the height of the drop part - yes, that's kind of the point but without the linking pat, it feels like the energy goes a little too much down.  Linking and riding passages is something I find difficult sometimes too, especially when they are so distinct and differing and it's not always obvious that's what it needs.

Here, given its melodic qualities, I'd definitely see if you can get a vocal on it, female if possible, to bring the track together, bring it alive.

Hope that's helpful!

Christ that's nuts - but it has something, inside the clipping there, that wonky sound is somehow appealing though you ned to control it more.  It's like you're juggling a robot slinky!
