I like to work on skills that I know I'm bad at. Sometimes it warrants a cool result. Ex: I'm not that good at chopping and flipping samples. When I'm in a rut with my original music, I start sampling. Other times, I just noodle around in a key I don't usually play in. Restrictions can also help (like not using a certain VST or using a specific set of samples for the entire song). Writer's block is the best opportunity to challenge yourself imo!

Like other have said, you don't need theory for putting your emotions into the music. All you need for that is your creativity. Theory knowledge will help you arrange/compose faster and will make your decisions more deliberate, but that's about it. Chances are that if you feel detached from your own music, you also feel detached from other people's music. My advice to you would be to listen to other music and relate them to your emotions. If you can do that with other music, you can certainly do it to your own.

My primary goal is to keep writing and creating music. My secondary goal is to learn how to DJ so that I can eventually perform my songs live.

The more I hear from Medasin, the more he rises to the top of my list of fav producers. This track was better than I thought it would initially lol

For FL users:

If you ever forget a cool melody you were noodling or you can't remember the chords you just played, you can always go to Tools > Dump score log to pattern and it will dump everything you played in the last 15 minutes into the current pattern. I use this all the time because it keeps me from getting out of the zone trying to remember something I played,

When you transition between sections, you have to change the energy of the song. You can achieve this with drum fills to signal something is about to change. Hell, you can even use silence! Subtract or add elements to the last bar or so of the section, and the listener will immediately get ready for something new.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Overcoming negative thoughts
« on: January 12, 2016, 06:32:53 am »
1. I stopped most of the negativity when I started keeping my music to myself lol I haven't posted anything on my SoundCloud in a while because I was so focused on making the kind of music I heard in my head. Ever since then, I've been getting closer to that ideal. Now that I'm thinking about it, I had to start making music that I didn't intend for others to hear first. That way, the pressure of hoping people would listen to it or like it went away.

2. I no longer compare myself to my favorite producers, I just enjoy their music as much as I enjoy mine. I'm not even close to being on their level so why would I put myself through the unnecessary heartache?

3. I listened to older tracks I made to measure my progress. I had a habit (that I'm still working on) of just listening to my loops/tracks repeatedly because I liked what I heard. It wasted a lot of time that I could have been producing, but I was proud of myself. Without even progressing on a track, I would just go through a bunch of files listening to what I made, and I could hear the progress. Don't waste time like I did lol but go through some of your old stuff and hear the progression. You'll probably cringe, but that's a good thing! It means you've learned a lot since you made those particular tracks.

There's a subreddit called Song A Week where everyone churns out a song every week for the whole year (obviously it can get done at your own pace because life gets in the way). Despite school and since it's my last semester, I'm taking a crack at it. If this goes well for you, maybe you can continue to make something every week? Good luck to you this month!

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Why do you do it?
« on: January 12, 2016, 06:13:41 am »
I realized that music was the only thing I enjoyed and didn't quit after a few months. I've been a musician since 2008 and I listen, re-listen, re-listen, and re-listen to a lot of music because there's so much to hear even in just one song. I'm not that good a musician (at least to my standards), but with DAWs anything is possible and progression never ends. I haven't stopped making music since I figured that out.
