Mixing/Mastering / Squashed sounding master?
« on: January 14, 2016, 06:50:51 am »
Assuming my mixdowns aren't complete trash, my masters lately have been utter shit. When I listen to them through the ASIO driver, everything sounds fine. When I switch to the primary sound driver, the volume lowers and the track sounds squashed. What do you guys do in order to prevent this? Is there something that I should be doing in the mixing stage that will help (besides leaving headroom, which I already do)? Thank you in advance for your responses.

In the past 7 months, I've learned a lot. I'm still not where I want to be in terms of the music I make, but I still enjoy it all the same. I've gone from somewhat crappy songs with all the sounds being presets to songs I actually have fun making with some sounds being my own. For the next year or so, I want to find my sound and develop it. After that I want to start performing my songs live and meet more local producers.

It's okay to not be motivated all the time honestly. If I'm not feeling motivated to open up my DAW for a day, I don't. I do another hobby instead or I try to get some of my schoolwork done. Maybe you could make a schedule where you produce 5 days out of the week and chill for the other 2 so that you don't burn out. In case of just staring at your DAW not knowing what to do, try to make something come out. Forced tracks aren't usually good, but at least you'll have something. Practice a technique or make a remix. Do something that you normally wouldn't do. Learn and apply a new skill.

While I'm at school, I have almost no time for production, so making the most of my breaks is enough motivation for me. I'm sure you'll find your motivation somewhere.

I can't pretend I'm not getting better. Knowing what makes a piece of music 'good' though is so difficult to define it's hard to see these improvements.

You probably won't see the improvements because they tend to happen subtly. I'm sure you'll back on your stuff in a few months and see the difference.

My friend suggested that I start. I've been a musician for years, but he told me to get FL and mess around with it. I had dabbled in production before, but I didn't make good music so I stop for a while. But once I picked it back up, I haven't stopped since.

I don't answer this as an "expert", but when I post a track, the most helpful response is telling me how it made you feel. Did it get you pumped? Did it do nothing for you? Did you start thinking of your ex and a tear came to your eye? Did you suddenly want to get high? Did it make you want to punch your computer screen?

Imo, those kind of responses are more helpful than anything mix related. For me at least.

I'll definitely give this a shot. Thank you for the response!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: How do you approach a mix?

I tried starting off mixing by turning the faders down to achieve headroom of about -6dB, but the volume would be too low for me to hear the effects. Now I just mix it at a volume loud enough to hear what I'm doing and then scale them all down until the master gets to -6dB.

BTW, are there any famous pop musicians who've risen to fame in the last 20 years who are blind? I can't name a single one, and once Stevie Wonder dies I won't be able to name any who are alive.

I actually have no idea ??? The only blind artist that I can name aside from Stevie Wonder is Ray Charles.

Keep the vocals! They sounds great. Idk if I'm the only one, but I would maybe bring them out more. They are hiding a bit underneath the music, which is great by itself, but in order for them to be effective they have to be heard clearly. I'm still new to production, so I can't give you quality feedback lol but hopefully that helps.

Had no idea you could export WAV and MP3 at the same time in FL! Good to know!

Getting inspired to write something always makes for an easier time, but there are times I get inspired after I get into the DAW. Sometimes when I make a loop for the sake of getting some production time in, I end up creating potential. I develop that potential and a few days later I have a song. I don't rely on inspiration to come to me because I know I'll find it somewhere.

Not every loop needs to become a song. There are days where we just have to develop a skill, which is why we should open up the DAW at least once a day and not just when we feel like it.

As someone that writes without lyrics, there are three things that I can think of right away: title of the song, instrumentation, and key characteristics. Just by looking at the title first glance, you can kind of get a feel for what you're getting into. If the title of a song is "Going Under" I'm going to assume it's a sad song. "Unleash the Fury" sounds aggressive, so I'm expecting to get pumped. With the first song, I assume its in a minor key or uses predominately minor chords. If the song sounds major, I'll have lost the point of the song and I won't understand the meaning of the title. The opposite can be said for the second song.

Now that I'm thinking of it, visuals help as well. These days, everyone has a visual that accompanies the music. Just look at SoundCloud. If you don't have an image, no one seems to care about your music. But somehow having a 200x200 picture and a cover background helps get your message across.

R&A Graveyard / Re: Different sub forums for DAWs?
« on: January 13, 2016, 01:11:27 am »
The last time I saw a forum have subs for DAWs, it was devolved into FL and Other. Granted, DAWs other than FL have gotten popular over the years, so this could work. However, I still foresee certain user bases falling to the wayside because they will be the minority.

Its all half arsed feedback (and it will continue to be so) because most of the people do not know what they are supposed to be listening for. Most people here have consumer taste in music and no deep understanding of music production...

I haven't given feedback/shared my music on this forum yet, but when I did so on Reddit, I found it hard to give good con crit. That wasn't because I was trying to half ass it so that more people would look at my stuff in return; it was genuinely because I didn't know what I should have been looking for. I can critique vocals and chord voicings, but I've only been at this for the past 7 months. I've improved a bit since I started but there are still things that I can't hear. I'm sure there are tons of people here that are in the same boat as me.

So now I ask this: How should we go about critiquing other people's work while we are inexperienced? I would love to give meaningful feedback to others. Obviously continuing to learn production will help, but what things do the experienced look out for that we need to know?

It takes me anywhere between a few days to a week to finish a track, though it's definitely taken me longer with some. I don't know if that's because I'm still new at this (about 7 months in) or if I just spend a lot of time at my DAW.
