The next trend is what the artists decide to make so we can have a direct influence on it! I think this summers trend is going to be breaks. Ghastly, Dallask, Nom De Strip and even jackal have all realeased singles like this. I think watching kshmr and martin garrix and whoever tiesto collaborates/steals from will be a big tell as far as EDM trends.

Sound Design / Re: Ghastly Get On This Lead
« on: April 05, 2016, 02:39:42 am »
Hello everyone, I've been trying to figure out how to make the lead that Ghastly uses in his track Get On This at 0:30. I think its a really cool lead but I am struggling with making it myself. Thanks for the help!

Do you have Serum by any chance?

Yes I do have Serum!

I was trying to make this sound earlier and started messing around with LD gamers if I was on the right track that would be hilarious.

After research and testing for I believe I found the composition of these kicks. I made a diagram in paint to show my theory.

Coming from a house music background I have created a number of kicks for most subgenres. However more hip-hop/808 inspired kicks that are found in allot of hybrid genres is something I cannot get sounding right. My current mission is to be able to make the super heavy kicks you can hear in the following three tracks.

https://soundcloud.com/luckyme/advent-16 (A. G. Cook - Beautiful (Rustie Edit)
https://soundcloud.com/luximpala/frontin-1 (lux.impala Frontin')
https://soundcloud.com/bydaruma/baht-daruma-vol-002-13-greaser (baht-greaser)

It seems to me that they all have a transient kick and then the bass of the kick seperate. If anyone knows any tips to make these kicks in a softsynth or kick vst that be v helpfull. Also if anyone has any solid 808 adivce in general that would be much appreciated.

It seems to me they either had an lfo controlling the volume or lfotoo/kickstart controlling the volume. Its ducking every 1 beat so 1/4 measure. The sound itself sounds like an organ and a suttle saw wave panned to the right.

Sound Design / Re: Big Kicks
« on: January 15, 2016, 05:23:10 pm »
If you could provide specific examples of the kick and build synth I could be of a better help. Tony junior has a couple different kicks in his songs but overall to get a big room kick you need a big thump as the top of the kick and then a sin bass that slowly decays for the rest of the duration. There are a multitude of drums synths out there and it is possible to make kick drums on the soft synth you are probably using now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YfecEnjdMg This tutorial gives the basic method to make a big room kick.

Hey hey,

Heard a Deep Down Low remix off of Tchami's Insta that he dropped in one of his recent sets (http://iconosquare.com/p/1142861415997435914_427690443), and loved the sound in the drop (reminds me a lot of Moksi, but actually isn't the Moksi remix/mashup). Been trying to find a way to reproduce it so far but haven't been able to. Any ideas?

Oh and while we're at it, if someone could explain the sporadic stab (I guess that's the term, I'm still a bit of a lingo noob, if someone could tell me that'd be sick) between 2:21 and 2:31 or so in this mix (https://soundcloud.com/wearemoksi/moksi-live-on-diplo-and-friends-13-12-2015), that would be really sick.

Thanks in advance :3

It seems that your interested in learning the future house basses that have been gaining popularity because they sound underground af but are also really aggressive. Most of these basses are made either in spire or serum since they can use fm synthesis while other synths use other methods.

Helpfull imformation about synth types

http://tweakheadz.com/software-synths/

There is a tutorial explaing why you cant effectivly use sylenth or massive to make the sound you want here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQVNHsQN444).
Though the stab you pointed out in the mix has a filter on an envelope and some distortion I believe but I am not to familiar with that sound. However I tried to recreate the UFO sounding lead in the tchami remix in spire.
Here is the sound attempt --- https://clyp.it/gb3hy5ze
The sound reminds me allot of some old alien invasion movie so I assumed that it would be a basic sound that older synths could create. Here is a photo of the main osc and also the osc goes down in pitch along with the envelope.

boom...
Any more question feel free to ask

For me the fx in my songs depend how big of an element it plays in the current part of the song. If the riser cuts through the mix and is meant to really build energy ill create it myself. Meanwhile if im just using noise and reverb to create suttle transitions ill slap on any sample that I think fits well.

The horns from The Game ft. Skrillex - El Chapo (clean sample at 3:27)

and i don't just mean like directly sampling them from the track they used (Frank Sinatra - Granada) i mean like how did they get the horns to sound the way they do in El Chapo. i got pretty much all the processing stuff you said down though, so i guess i'll just have to copy from the last little bit in the song where the horns just play solo.

I dont think bangladesh directly sampled from the frank sinatra song in the final cut of el chapo. Many hip hop producers sample a song in a demo track and then re-record the sample using better instruments. Also due to the nature of this song being an extra from the games album the documentary 2/2.5 I am skeptical that bangladesh or skrillex would actually call in and record a horn section which leads me to think that a sample library is used. As far as proscessing the horn section is cut at 100-150 hz because the low end is just drums because thats why it bumps in the whip so well. The horns are also present in the middle and far sides of the sterero field so stereo imaging or utilizing a width knob in the sample library player would do the trick. The final brightness on the high end probably comes in the mastering stage I would believe.

TLDR I am not the Horn guy.

ahhh yeah the sample library makes so much sense then, because they did the same thing (at least i believe so) with the intro of the song. if you listen to the sample they supposedly used, "El Gato Montes - Manuel Penella Moreno", it doesn't at all sound the same as the El Chapo intro.

Yea the funny thing you will learn as you try to recreate more hip-hop/pop songs is that beats are very simple but the pieces of the beat are made wisely and in the most practical way possible. After I learned this I realized electronic music can be created in the same fashion.

Even Flux Pavilion said he doesn't spend much time on every synth, the key is mixing, for example Zedd saws on "Break Free" sound so powerfull and yet good, they're pretty EQ'd on the mids and the kick makes a lot of the work

Im glad I am not the only person that really likes break free even though I really dislike all of his other pop creations. As far as the sexy french house synth goes getting the envelope and chords on point are key for the sound.

Though Fire Producer Luca Lush just released a sample pack with the synth your looking for. It costs 20$ but it might be worth it if your really chasing that lead. https://soundcloud.com/lucalush/lushbox-3  Im like 50/50 buying it right now because I love the dude so much but im pretty broke.

Some Madeon sounds:
-  Zephyr  https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/zephyr
- Home Arp https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/home
- The City lead https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/the-city-lead-remake-attempt There should be a pitch down at the end but I failed at it so whatever
- Imperium Bass, kinda? https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/imperium-bass-remake-attempt

If you could shed some light on how you made the imperium bass and second sound that would be awsome.
