WIPs / Re: Any Feedback is Coolio
« on: March 05, 2016, 10:39:40 pm »
all the other sounds would greatly benefit from the bass being cut around the areas of 2k and 4k.  But do it without taking away too much presence, because I know what you're going for.  good job, but the counter melodies need work. nice vocals, where are they from?
Hmm okay I'll try. I always like how most sounds are in the 2k-4k hz range but because there are already a lots of boosting in there, might be worth cutting it from the bass yeah. Counter melodies still wip, gotta keep working on really making it fit in well with the rest of the track. Vocals are from acapellas of "3LAU - How You Love Me" :^)

Sound Design / Re: presets vs sound design

WhatÅ› also dope is twerking the presets that youe made yourself. You get some seriously unique results.

I think FL has that ghost notes option which makes it pretty cool, wish ableton had that so I wouldn't need to keep copy and pasting lol.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Headroom
« on: February 25, 2016, 07:09:41 pm »
Leave the master at 0db. After processing each individual tracks/group tracks, make sure all of them are at like -18db-ish or lower, and adjust as needed. I keep my kick at -12db, and my snare at -15db, cus I want those to be the loudest. Whenever I do this, I find that my headroom on the master is exactly -6db or lower, which is a nice amount of headroom for mastering!

Yep, that's what I do on Ableton

Pretty cool man, I like the filtered parts in the drop, but yeah like the others I'd say just work on the the transitions and the kick. Keep it up!

Hmm thanks guys, yeah I was just a little worried. Like right now I'm trying and once again I can only hear up to 14,500hz, but I guess this is only a sensativity issue?

A few things: Make sure there is no filter on the pure sine wave you're using, whether in the synth or in the DAW.  Make sure your headphones are rated for 20kHz+. Otherwise, it won't matter how high the synth emits sounds.  Use a frequency analyzer (Spectrum in ableton) to visualize the sound to help your ears and confirm the sound.

Hopefully this helps.
it's not a synth, they have a tone generator in the option window.

You do need to increase the volume to hear the higher frequencies, just because they have a faster vibration and aren't as prominent as the lower frequencies.

Check out waves and amplitudes.

If you're really concern, go to a doctor, but it seems like it's pretty normal.

http://plasticity.szynalski.com/tone-generator.htm

I used this thing and at like 9760hz, my right ear picks up more than the left.

14132hz is where my left ear picks up more than my right ear.

past the 9760hz, on it's way to 14132hz, the tones shift to the middle then at around 11686hz, is when i get both ears to sound relatively the same volume.

Probably a little biased towards the right.

I was also at volume level of 9% the whole time. 16134hz is where i have to crank up the volume 100%. I think that's also my tinnitus range.

the volume percentages were based off the site.

I think that's pretty ok, i mean, i don't know how symmetrical my ears should be, with some digging i found that each ear picks up different things. Right is more speech oriented and left is more musically oriented.

our faces aren't symmetrical, so i am not sure other than to go see a doctor if you're concerned.

i've also seen quite a few of these things pop up over the search.

Hmm I see, yeah I've read a lot of these. I mean if I heard the 20,000HZ range once before and many other times, then I guess I'm all gud right? I just don't know why other times I couldn't hear that high, + I don't want to test again bcz I'm pretty sure its bad for my hearing and such even if I can't hear it. So yeah, I'm good?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Question Regarding Frequency Tone Response
« on: February 23, 2016, 07:22:02 pm »
Hey so I use ableton live, and I wanted to test out my frequency hearing range. I had normal hearing 20hz - 20,000hz but I had to turn up the volume to hear the higher frequencies better. Another day I tested it, and I could only hear up to 14,500hz, and later that day I could hear up to 20,000hz fine again...
So I'm wondering if this is an issue with my ears (fatigue?) or my windows 7 laptop being inconsistent at emitting frequencies.

I tested with and without headphones. I use Bose ae2, and I'm 18 years old

p.s. sorry if this is the wrong section to post this, idk where it would fit ;X

Sound Design / Re: Saturation or distorted signals
« on: February 22, 2016, 05:41:43 pm »
Not too sure what you're asking but if your basses need some more girth, distortion is always helpful. Yes, you can create a return track with camel crusher/any distort plugin, have the dry/wet to 100%, and slowly add in that signal to the bass to the right amount. Low-cutting is good but for basses not as much, I would have a sharp cut at maybe ~ 100hz, cus everything below is kick and sub. Give it a little boost in the 200-300hz as well, but not too much that it overshadows the snare.

WIPs / Need Mastering/Mixing tips! [WIP clip]

^just a wip and practiced some mastering too. I use izotope matching EQ's and rms to about -6. I'm just curious how you guys compress each band cus for me I pretty much have all frequencies of each band go thresh at dif ratios.

Definitely can use some melodic groove to keep things interesting! Very percussive!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: What exactly is a "counter melody"?

here's a good example, at 0:23 notice how there's the vocal melody and the piano one mixed together, but one doesn't overshadow the other. Counter melodies are a really nice my tip is to not overdo it cus it can sound messy (^.^)

Any deadmau5 interviews, I can relate to his unhealthy addiction to technology, and I also like his concept of having control over all your music and not being just a puppet in the industry. Although he does have a lot of twitter feuds n stuff, he is a total genius and you can tell that just by watching his livestreams.
