How would you make the funny lead bell/kalimba thing you hear in this song at 1:17

https://soundcloud.com/tennysonmusic/no-answer

you can hear it in this track too at 1:17 oddly enough

Sound Design / Synthesizing Drums for a Noob
« on: January 07, 2016, 03:21:03 pm »
I want to be able to synthesize really unique drum sounds and effects (think Flume or Ta-Ku) but I have no idea how or where to start. I know how to synthesize a basic kick from a sine wave but it sounds very plain and generic. I'm not sure how I would even go about claps, snares, shakers, hats, etc. Or do people like flume just sample drums from other songs and run them through a bunch of fx? I would rather not use pre-made drum hits from sample packs as I understand you are very limited in the sounds you can create.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Sub-Bass/Bassline Theory

If your sub is clashing with your melody its likely that you are using non-chord tones in your melody. A non-chord tone is basically a note thats not part of the chord. A basic rule for bass is that it should be a chord tone.

this needs a super lush female vocal, in my opinion. the whole track sounds kind of old, in a good way. if you had an outstanding vocalist front and center with the right amount of reverb, it could be really cool. i also think when your drums come in, the filters on your synths could open up more.

there's my two cents :)

Thanks thats a good thought, when you mentioned lush vocals i immediately thought of mat zo's Only for You which is, coincidentally the relative major of this key ;)

i really love this slightly retro feeling you've got going on, so i might suggest a teeny tiny little touch of static on top??

i'm not entirely sure how i feel about the way you introduce that saw lead - the suddenness of it clashes slightly with the really smooth keys underneath. maybe stick a filter on it, or start it out drenched in reverb that gradually goes away?

just out of curiosity, did you record those vocals yourself or did you grab them from somewhere?

Haha there I actually do have some static on top but that channel was muted when I bounced it. The lead I want to really pop out when you first hear it so I'm not sure about the reverb but I do want it more mellow/sad sounding. Do you have any suggestions for that?

Yes I recorded both the guitar and vocals myself :)

I feel like the chords need to have a lowpass on them, and then slowly allow more high end through.

Good thought I'll add that in.

Don't think this is ready to share yet but I'm excited for this forum!

I'd love some feedback. This is my first song but don't hold back, be critical I want to learn.

Really crisp sounding production but it gets a little repetitive. I would add some fills, and a melody to the later section.
