WIPs / Arrangement Troubles!!
« on: May 12, 2016, 04:12:15 am »
I started producing when this forum opened, and for me arranging songs is by far the hardest aspect of production.

I like all the individual segments of this but I can't make them fit together well!

Can anyone help me out with this? Do you have any tips for arranging tracks?

Wow I think it sounds surprisingly good. Vocals sound a bit far away in the mix I think they need to be more upfront. Each sound could be cleaned up a bit with eq as well so they each have their own space in the mix and don't sound muddled. Did you use any real instruments for this? Like guitar or drums?

Drums (kick and snare) should hit a bit harder and be more pronounced. Mix at the drop sounds a little quiet/muddled. You may need to do some eqing below 1kHz which will clear up the mix and give more headroom for loudness. Haven't heard the original but vocals fit this version pretty well, good job overall.

yes drums definitely could be louder, but very well done overall. I like the brass sounds right at the beginning what did you use to make those?

WIPs / Cant get the reverb right for this drop!
« on: April 03, 2016, 06:16:38 am »
I have been pulling my hair out trying to get the right balance of early and late reflections for the saw in this drop. Gotten to the point I'm not sure what I want anymore. Anyone have suggestions on how I should tweak it? Any other feedback?

I also struggle with this. If anyone else has some knowledge on this that would be great

Don't be too hard on yourself man, sound design is on point and production sounds really good. The 808 sub thing could be a little louder in this though. If I were you I would work on my music theory skills rather than production technique thats an area I feel could use a bit of improvement.

Posted on Bandcamp because Soundcloud flagged me for copyright :(

Is there any way to avoid this? Was really disappointed when soundcloud flagged me for something I worked hard on.

Free download if anyone is interested. Feedback is welcome.

Sound Design / Parallel Processing and Kick Drums
« on: March 07, 2016, 07:53:49 pm »
I've been told a really good way to fatten up kicks is to add effects in parallel like a phaser. But I'm also told that low frequency sounds (kicks and basses) should always be in mono. This contradicts itself since phaser makes sounds stereo. Whats the right answer here? Should I run a kick through a phaser then make the output of the phaser mono then mix it back with the original sound?

Mixing/Mastering / I don't understand mixing/mastering
« on: March 07, 2016, 01:11:41 am »
I have always understood mixing as getting the right levels on each of the tracks in a song so every element sounds balanced and not out of place. But what i don't really understand is the concept of headroom and loudness. Say a song peaks at -3dB that means theres 3dB of headroom but that song could be much louder than another one that also has 3dB of headroom. How is this possible? dB are a measure of volume and if 2 songs are both at -3dB how come one can be louder than the other. How should I go about mixing songs so that they are loud? some things I've made max out at 0dB and are quiet compared to other things I've made that max at -3dB.

WIPs / Re: Im pretty proud of this, but I want feedback

Definitely like the ideas you've got going. The Mix is a lot quieter than it could be. The kick is veeery weak. try and boost the kick so it hits harder.

As for the above comment, some reverb could go a very long way towards making this feel bigger / louder.

Keep it up!

Any suggestions on making the kick hit harder? I've already put it through some parallel compression / phaser and it's hitting at -1 dB
